Rance retiring frees up around $800k next year, so we can probably look to target another star with a nice healthy contract.

The question is whether to replace Rancey with another star key defender, or to go after a star mid to maybe help transition Cotch into a less taxing role.

Darcy Moore is probably the only elite option key defender out of contract, with his age (23) making him very appealing as a like-for-like replacement.

However, there's a lot more options with mids, and some juicy free agents that wouldn't cost us any draft picks.

Crouch is the obvious one that we could go after again, and Zac Williams has proven he's capable of being a star mid and defender, and the flexibility could appeal to us.

The really interesting one is that Andrew Gaff has a clause in his contract that says he can leave as a free agent at the end of 2020 if he likes—and we already know he has interest in coming to Richmond, although he still doesn't fill a need.

I'm trying to understand AFL lists. Can anyone tell me if, Rance's departure frees up a spot on our list immeaditely , but doesn't free up salary space until the contract expires?
What did Grigg do? Did he resign completely & stopped taking any payments so that a list spot opened up?
Rance has f*&d us hasn't he?
Makes no difference if he retired 3 months ago or now as we can fill his spot on the list with another player in the coming period similar to Stack

Rance contract will only effect our cap space depending on what we pay him and i dont believe he will get paid so there is a saving in our cap which can be used

Hey GUN what's your realistic appraisal of our backline for the next two years in...
1...Injuries, age, stress on just the best back 6 playing all year again as good as they did this year...
2...Best players to trial down back as KP?!?
Mate i think we are ok for the Now but will need a quality backman in 2 years time,We have 3 players that will finish in 2-3 years time in Astbury,Grimes & Houli
unless we either get some quality coming through in Garth / Miller / Balta / Biggy then we could be in trouble

I would seriously be trialling Chol down back in the pre season to see what he has and see if he might make it as a backman but would also be looking to bring in a 18 year old who has missed out on being drafted like we did with Sydney Stack

Cooper Sharman / Dyson Hilder are 2 players that surprisingly missed out on selection but would also be in the ear of Sam Taylor from GWS. But as a free agent in 2 years time Harris Andrews is the player that we should be looking to tempt

I think the Defence is covered. Balta is a diamond in the rough.
We need to improve further up the ground. Throw the kitchen sink at a young gun midfielder. (I would say Whitfield but he's signed on for 7 years).

I think we dodged a bullet with Whitfield

Hopefully as bright as a diamond in a goats arse!

How many more mids do we need?

Cotchin, Martin, Prestia, Edwards, Lambert, Pickett, Ross, Bolton and Graham is plenty of options with guys like RCD, Dow, Higgins and Stack being more long term players. Caddy and Baker also did a job in there for us last year. For once I feel like we’re well and truly covered for midfielders.

Key defenders on the other hand we’re f***ed. Need to throw the kitchen sink at Moore as Balta looks years off. Moore is only injury prone because he’s training on that concrete dump. There’s also no chance Collingwood can pay him what he’s worth after they re-sign JdG and Grundy.

It’s worth asking the question. Wasn’t he linked to Sydney last year? Don’t think he’s as settled as some people think.

didnt rance, cotchin, riewoldt sign smaller contracts?
Pretty sure they did but would have been around the $50k range, Rance's contract will end straight away giving us room in the next 2 years of roughly $750k x 2 years.

We wont be paying this money to a new player on high salary but will most likely fron end a Dusty/Lynch contract with the 2020 money and will give Richmond breathing space the following year.

Are we allowed to tinker with, restructure the long contracts Lynch/Dusty

Wouldn't be spending the Rance money on one big money recruit. Rather see us spread it around over the next couple of years and reward those that have taken unders in recent years to remain.

We will be going through a period of evolution in the next 1-2 years
Rance - Gone
Houli - Likely gone end of 2020
Astbury / Grimes - will be taking unders after their current deals and will be looking to retire 2-3 years
Edwards - I see him playing another 3 years so will probably get slight under what he currently gets
Riewoldt - See Edwards
Prestia - I think he will also take a cut

We will have some funds available in 2 years time to go shopping again

I don’t think they were smaller per-sae they just extended them so they could spread the payments over a longer period of time so they could free up some of that money so give to other players

I like Pickett as much as the next Tigers supporter, I mean come on, he is a 1 game premiership hero

But I also wonder whether he can generate consistent performance which would make him truly worthy of the status many give him. His GF performance was built on great VFL form leading in, timing was perfect, but is that his peak?

Townsend had a purple patch in 2018 and wasn’t sighted again. Hope it won’t be the case with Pickett.

Also wonder whether Higgins will get back from what happened to him. A brain bleed is very serious particularly when related to a congenital condition. Hope for his sake he is ok to come back
Comparing Picket to Townsend is like comparing chalk and cheese.

Jacob could almost be described as a 5 game wonder who has been in the system forever and just doesnt have the tools or the consistency to say hey this bloke is a AFL player.

Pickett well hes a 1 game player who had consistency thru out his entire careerand clearly has the tools to play very well at the level. His one game is no fluke or something that cant be maintained. He is clearly a player who should have been drafted yrs ago and there is a fair few with similar stories.

one of the youngest premiership teams going into the following season with Rance retiring?

average age under 24?

i expect hawks 2008-9 was pretty young but the website doesnt seem to be working

edit hawks were crazy young in '09

22.5
This is where people go wrong they look at the average age of entire lists yet the average age of most sides best 22 is significantly higher f reor obvious reasons. Plus the average age can be severly corrupted just by haveing an extra 2 or 3 30 yr olds on your list
THe hawks won the flag in 2008 with an average age 24yrs 218d with 2362 games behind those players.

Hmm best 22 compared to overall list is usually a chasm. You can have 20 24 juniors on your list but if few of them actually develop your in a world of pain long term because you dont actually have players up to standard despite them being young.

Collingwood won a flag in 2010 with a team aged 24yrs and 57days and have not won a flag since.

As upsetting that it is to lose Rance, it puts us back in the game in terms of free agents. That being said there isn’t a lot that excite me.
Two I’d expect us to chase are Brad Crouch and Aidan Corr.
Also surely GWS can’t keep all their young midfielders that will want more opportunity. I’d be sniffing around Caldwell and O’halloran
