Problem is how do you develop a kid for AFL properly if you're going to wrap him in cotton wool? Even with specially modified programs, with all the running and contact drills they have to do, it would be hard task preventing injuries. I think an unfortunate but necessary part of this business is that injuries sort the wheat from the chaff. There is sort of a darwinian element to it. Regardless of talent, either you have a body that can handle the rigors of AFL or you don't.
I agree on the Darwinian aspect - I understand contact injuries etc - my point was that this kid has made it this far on his own ( practically) utilising all the tools and body movement he grew up with , and then joins a senior program and breaks down

You have to question the system along with the player - its not one or the other.

Its like Gibson - whether you agree with us trading for him - the fact he played 100+ games for the Roos in a row and then broke down here was a warning light on this board that something wasnt right

tl;dr maybe the player/kid isnt injury prone but in a bad system

I agree with your point on Gibson. If you follow my posting you would know I don't rate our current fitness boss at all. Hass is the last remaining remnant of Burton's regime and I'd prefer to see him flushed out of the system before he inevitably becomes our board's next whipping boy.

OK, not Crows but not AFL… This is a call out to the Bigfooty community, to help a young man.

He is a 17 year old Ugandan refugee, who can’t live at home because his mum has mental illness and there is domestic violence. He is living in supported accommodation with Baptist Care SA, where Mrs Arrowman works.

He is in school (Year 11) and doing well. Baptist Care staff describe him as a fine young man. Soccer is his life, he is passionate about it, and he is in the Adelaide City U17 team and he is a prospect for the U18 team. But…

It costs $1400 for the year (kit, referees and other costs). He has a Saturday morning job and has arranged to pay in instalments, but he needs help.

We have two donors 😊 who are paying half, and we are looking for help to pick up the rest. He was told about this first half this morning before school, and he was jubilant.

Will the Adelaide Bigfooty community help? You can donate here at the link below, please make sure to select “Youth” as the Program. You will receive an email receipt and it’s tax deductible.

Unexpected item in bouncing area.

Down down, bouncing is down. Down down, keeping em down.

While it has obviously no bearing on the game, in the grand scheme of things it does cheapen the AFL brand IMO.

At least if Coles had a symbol in the centre, it would be bit more palatable.

Eddie opens up a bit about the damage that camp caused.

This is why we had to have change... but came a year later than it should have given we have poor decision makers.

Still unbelievable we let Birdbrain employ an unqualified charlatan to completely destroy the fabric of the club whilst we were in the premiership window.. & never apologised.

We should find out this year how much this has been holding us back the last 2 years.

Nothing really new in that article, really just some journo in Melbourne rehashing the past again. I feel a little sad though that Eddie felt the need to leave to reignite his joy for the game.

I was a massive fan of Pyke up until the camp. After the camp though and heading into 2018 it started becoming clearer that he endorsed some or all of Burton’s desicions/initiatives.

It’s been a long a time since I can remember an off season with so little publicity and so little expectation, for either us or Port for that matter.

I’m looking forward to this season. Hopefully a few pleasant surprises, and no doubt the odd disappointment.

This.

Reckon Eddie getting dropped didn't go down too well with him either.

It will be the first time in ages that neither Port or the Crows will be considered April premiers. I'm okay with this though. We seem to do a little better when we're not burdened by the footy media over hyping us.

True, but his drop in form may have been related to him losing his enjoyment of the game. A led to B, and he didn't like B any more than he did A.

I think a lot of us may be feeling flat after a confluence of:
* all the recent dramas
* club giving a few wallies the boot as a result
* the club jettisoning older players and doing a re-fresh
* pre-season training being hard to access due to the Footy Park works
* us being highly invested over the last few seasons and feeling a bit jaded

But looking forward to a new season with new coach and lots of new kids to see what they're like.

Yeah, I think my general feeling is uncertainty. I have low expectations; not because I expect failure as such, but because I don't know what to expect.

Do we replicate the past and full-on try to win, playing the right-now best players? Try and make the 8 then anything can happen.

Do we do a mix of experience with a few debutantes?

Do we go full newb team with half a dozen vets to marginally steady the ship? Does this then work surprisingly well and we make finals? Or as many predict we get another pick in top 6.

Do we go country footy fun and rotate ends for players just for shiggles and "rebuild through the draft"?

Any of those could happen, so again, I have no expectations.
