Mentioned with crouch compo tier 1 below is what I’d do draft wise among trading in Valente

1- Thilthorpe
2- Hollands
9- Grainger-Barrass
20- trade for Hately
26- Baldwin
42- Edwards
51- Newchurch
65- Borlase

Playing as much youth next year my 22 with some decent senior depth still contracted as break glass in case needed if they’ve not been paid in Lynch, Tex and Gibbs

I’m really keen getting Dood into the midfield

FB: Brown — Talia — Hamill
HB: Smith — McCasey — Edwards
C: Milera — Jones — Sloane
HF: Hollands — Thilthorpe — McHenry
FF- McAdam — Fogarty — Stengle
R: O’Brien — Hately — Doedee
INT: M.Crouch — Frampton— Valente —Laird
Another key defender? What about Butts and Worrell?

Getting 2 needs sorted at 1 and 2 go best available at 9
With Potentially Dood moving into the middle Grainger-Barrass can play the intercept role
Doedee has come back better than I thought he would but I don't have high hopes on him transitioning to the midfield, he has the attributes, but I just dont see it happening. Defence has been an area we have spent massively on in terms of draft picks, neglecting the midfield. Id much rather draft two mids in the top ten if things were to fall the way you have posted.

There is some serious gold put there not getting games at giants, suns, port and cats. Would imagine dogs as well, given our lack of mids and players aged in early 20s doing much we should have a crack at some of them with the lure of games
I agree, but in saying that yeah they might be good value but none of them are super stars, we need some elite talent... Caldwell would be the only one I'd be super interested in.

“Clubs should pay their top eight players – those that win or lose the game for you every week and play all the time – as much as they deserve. They are your stars. They deserve top dollar,” Montagna continued.

“You then need to pay your next five or six young players – the ones that are going to be stars – because you need to keep them at your footy club.

“Anyone in between, I know it sounds harsh, should be hard-balled.”

Lewis added: “More clubs need to go down that path. Make it disproportionate.

“Pay your top-end high and your bottom-end low. And if they want to leave, well so be it.”

Just came across this article. A much more diplomatic version of what Ricciuto said the other week regarding player retention.

The elephant in the room which I’m sure at some point a journalist will address or at least acknowledge when discussing the Crows and player retention over the last decade, is how exactly we were supposed to match the salaries these players were being offered elsewhere without blowing the cap. GWS have experienced similar issues.

Right a quiet Sunday morning thoughts on below draft/trade strategy (yes it won’t all happen but can dream)

1: bid on Ugle-Haggan (WB match)
2: Thrilthorpe - FWD/Ruck
3: Hollands - MID
13: Trade > GWS for Hately
20: Baldwin - KPF
30: ? perhaps used as trade bait
40: Edwards FS pick - MID
46: Newchurch NGA pick - Small FWD
69: Borlase NGA pick - Utility
74: abit left field but throw a lifeline to Paddy McCartin

Trades
13> GWS for Hately

Laird + future 3rd to GWS for Caldwell + GWS 2021 3rd rounder coming back

2021 2nd rounder > GC for Will Brodie

2021 GWS 3rd rounder and future 4th > FRE for Valente

Massive influx of young talent a lot homegrown

Thrilthorpe - SA
Hollands - VIC Metro
Hately - SA
Baldwin - SA
Edwards - SA
Newchurch - SA
Borlase - SA
McCartin - VIC Metro - but he will grateful for the lifeline
Caldwell - VIC country
Brodie - Vic Country
Valente - SA
Reckon we get Hately a lot cheaper than pick 13.

13 is Charlie Cameron territory.

Hately hasn't done anything.

Here’s a challenge for all you number dogs out there.

If we are going purely in a Moneyball tactic who would be the #1 clearance player (by stats) that we could get as a FA this offseason. I.e. No trade currency needed.

For argument sake take players still on their rookie contract off this list.

So this appears to be the list of FA midfielders sorted by highest clearance average:

Brad Crouch (RFA)
Jack Viney (RFA)
Anthony Miles
David Mundy
Marc Murphy
Mark Hutchings

I don't think any of those players are worth pursuing

If Dave Mundy wanted to come in for a year I would take him in a half a heartbeat. Even if it’s on a Sam Mitchell like deal. As underrated as they get IMO.

Jack Viney doesn’t disinterest me, but I don’t know how much of that is based off his career trajectory from 3-4 years ago. TBH I’m not sure how he’s going these days

We have 2 x first rounders already, likely to get a third through Brad either at the start of the first round or end of first round. The plan should be to then use the rest of our chips, Atkins compo, Laird, maybe Matt Crouch, the 2 x second rounders we already have to try and get in the first round again.

4 x first round picks then Edwards, Newchurch and Borlase we should be happy with.

4 first round picks? lmao

Use 2 absolute max, wouldn't even mind just using pick 1. Then parlay everything into next years draft. Port have shown how much it costs to move down the order in a good draft, we need all the picks we can get.

How we handle next years draft could well be the difference between how long we are stuck on the bottom of the ladder.

It's very likely we will have 3 x first rounders, and a 4th shouldn't be that much of a stretch.

If we have picks 2 and 3 (assuming bulldogs have pick 1), we use those two as well as Edwards, Newchurch and Borlase. We then have another 2 mid to late first rounders, maybe 3 second rounders, how do we move them into next years draft?

I do like the idea of getting into next year's draft.

We have pick 20 and 26. So we have options.
26 or what it will be would be the one as we have the psd as a fallback threat and can offer hately good coin if we want to. Then GWS will have to take what we offer of we get him for free. A 2nd rounder maybe in the 20's is not great but not too horrific for them to have to swallow...of course it is assuming we want hately and he wants to come here

I agree that if next year's drafting is better, trading out of this for next, is a good idea, given we're probably fairly set with our picks with f/s and NGA.

Can't wait for the melts though. So many already p***ed that we keep kicking the can down the road and not using the picks we have.

I'm okay with taking picks 2 and 3, Edwards, Newchurch and Borlase. That is still on paper our best ever draft haul.

How do we get into next year's first round?

Trading out senior players for picks in this year's draft and moving them on.

We have 4, possibly 5 picks inside 30 this year + NGA and FS selections. Now a couple of those will take the picks we have this year, and you don't want to go into debt next year, so I think we use those and call it a day.
