Re what Freo do with the top two draft picks..

Our first one, I believe should be best available.

Second one should be needs basis, considering currently we only have 3 live picks.

But what is best available, in these Covid times.. Best exposed form, Best upside, Best in 2 years or 5 years.

Drafting has progressed past the subjective stage and its often now a metrics driven process with comparisons of projections of what they could be in 2,3 or 5 years time.

Without current metrics and exposed form, some decisions this Covid year will be made based on “informed” decisions.

This means backing the talent identification teams choices.

Freo has one of the better funded Talent Identification/recruiting teams which hopefully wasn’t squirrel gripped by the bean counters in the down sizing earlier this year.

I’m backing our team, just wondering if they are an exposed form bias, or an upside bias this year.. as the two are not necessarily the same players this year.

You seem to advocate best available, then proceed to outline the vagaries of what that actually means. Anyway I reckon in the range of our first pick are a bunch of similarly rated players. Pick the one from that bunch who offers the biggest point of difference or impact to our list. We don't need just another mid, or winger, or forward. We need one who contrasts and brings something different. That would be my strategy.

O'Driscoll with his power and pace.
Cox with a unique combination of height, run and duel sided kicking.

I do agree a point of difference would be nice. Cox looks good in highlights but probably 2023 season before he’s contributing meaningfully. O’Driscoll could play next season.
If the likes of Will Phillips somehow slid to our pick I wouldn’t think twice about taking him

We don't need draftees to play immediately. We are at the end of a rebuild. But yes, if a player they rate significantly higher slips through, grab them.

Knightmare reckoned Phillips is comparable to Matt Rowell so he will be well off the board if that is even half true. I liked the look of Eddie Fords highlights personally, but at the end of the day highlights mean stuff all when it comes to drafting. Zane Trew is interesting, seems to have lost a lot of shine in the last couple of months and could well be available mid 20s. 3 months ago people had him pegged as a top 10 pick.

Phillips will be top 4.

Gorringe and Haddow in the best for the Sharks. It shows character to play well when your team is well beaten.
Watched the game last night. Haddow always puts his body on the line and gives his all, his kicking is probably why he doesn't get drafted. Brandon Walker should have been in bests for EF - probably was their best player. EF only ever looked dangerous when he had the ball in hand. These two also deserve credit for being undersized defending against Subi's two best forwards and restricting them to just one goal between them. Hagan is really going to be a gun - was EF's only midfielder that looked above average and he is just 15yo! Gorringe was ok down back as well. Connor (another of our NGA) did some nice things before getting injured. Chris Walker didn't get many opportunities - probably worth a punt on still but doesn't look in the same league as his brother unfortunately.

Subi smashed them because their intensity was through the roof comparatively. Their midfield completely annihilated the Sharks'. They were outnumbering by more than one at every contest and were lining up when they went forward. It looked like they had an extra half dozen players on the field. Their teamwork was sensational to watch - 10 different goal kickers sums it up. Vanirsen was clear best on. Him, Johnson and the whole midfield were really good - their pressure was elite. Morris did his draft chances no harm. Also really liking Brockman and want to see more of him. If they play with that same intensity next weekend I can see them being a good chance of beating Claremont. Western always seems to play quite well against Subi so who knows though? And Lane won't get destroyed in the ruck like Muskarovsky did.

If Valente is staying I don't think we need Trew.

Valente has played zero games of AFL footy in two seasons. He cannot be relied upon.

Him and Tucker are literally the only inside mids outside the round 18 side still on our list. We could convert Banfield back to an inside mid but honestly I expect him to be delisted as well once all list changes have been made.

If best available is an inside mid then so be it.

Agree with this. Love to see Valente make it but the stats suggest he is much more likely to be a bust, having not gotten on the park in 2 years. It a not like he’s a ruck or developing KPP. I know he was injured last year but there was a lot of injured players this year too and Colyer getting the call up in the last game ahead of him wasn’t a great sign..

No idea how Colyer managed to get a 3 year deal off us in 2018 either. Crazy stuff in hindsight. If he was OOC this year would be 100% delisted. Could he be paid out this year to free up a list spot I wonder?

Not sure if it’s required if Blakely is traded and Banfield delisted tbh.

It’d leave us with 35 on the senior list, one rookie and one Category B rookie assuming everyone else is contracted. We’d probably delist and re-rookie at least one, perhaps more if list sizes are more than expected.

Is there a reason Vanirsen hasnt been mentioned on here ...or has he and I missed it
Couldnt tune in until the last quarter when he was off the ground

What are his attributes / negatives?

I don't disagree Valente has a lot to do but Colyer coming in wasn't a sign. Colyer is a forward and so is Tabs. We had to reshuffle the team to bring Valente in and it is entirely possible we didn't want to do that.

Blakeley is an inside mid and North just got delisted. And Cerra is an inside mid who we can't currently give time to.

Trew looks like a decent option but in that part of the draft the already dubious concept of best available begins to lose meaning unless a more highly rated player has not already been snaffled. The coach has talked about the need for outside run and speed and a ruck/forward, so taking an inside mid would be a head scratcher.

The difference between Trew and Carroll or Cook, for example, are certainly not an inked in rating. However the impact for a side wanting outside run and speed is significant. If the coach had talked about deficiencies in the clearances, switch choices. Either way we are likely to hear that we went best available and couldn't believe he was still there.

I’m not a big Nik Cox fan, I have him as a second rounder - although I accept he’ll go earlier because of his potential. Reminds a bit of Alex Pearce as a junior and I think he’ll eventually settle in defence too. Hard to really judge without him playing this year though.

I’ve looked back at Alex Pearce’s draft year highlights, and the similarity is quite striking,

Differences being Cox is quicker and a better kick on both feet. But they move in a similar way.

Being a better kick and dual sided is a big difference.

Lachlan Vanirsen (Subiaco) won the Jack Clarke medal. Really impressive given he pretty much came from nowhere at the start of the season. Had an impressive round 1 game in a loss against Claremont and didn't look back.

reasonable height too. Big stats. What’s his pace and kicking like? Future winger?

Think he's just a solid footballer, decent at everything he does but no real standout attributes. I haven't seen enough of him but I'm leaning towards him being a good WAFL player.

The combine is on today and Jack Carroll has been given the all clear to participate which is great. There is little correlation between doing well at a combine and being a successful AFL player but it does give some extra data to consider. Our NGA boys should do well but I'm actually more keen to see how Carroll, O'Driscoll and others do.

WA combine invitees

Claremont: Jack Avery, Kalin Lane, Joel Western, Logan Young.

East Fremantle: Jack Carroll, Brandon Walker, Chris Walker.

East Perth: Jack Hindle.

Peel Thunder: Isiah Winder.

Perth: Jaiden Hunter, Logan McDonald, Nathan O’Driscoll.

South Fremantle: Shannon Neale.

Subiaco: Tyler Brockman, Blake Morris.

Swan Districts: Denver Grainger-Barras, Zane Trew.

West Perth: Heath Chapman, Kellen Johnson.
