Don’t mind that rule change, probably means a lot more hiding

I think they definitely need to make it harder to match bids for top NGA prospects but I'm not sure the strategy of a no matching zone in the draft is the best strategy. It discourages the development of young players, which is really what the NGAs are for. They also might stuff up the connection fans have with their prospects - heaps more people are engaged with the ND because of f/s and nga prospects they've followed for a couple of years leading up to it.

Tightening up qualification for NGA, removing discounts and not allowing deficits might achieve the same goal but without making the draft process even more complicated.

Think they've got to stop putting bandaids on things (just like with the umpiring) and instead step back and review the entire drafting process hopefully to make it simpler and not devolving into something so complex it becomes more about leveraging loop holes in the rules rather than players being distributed in a way that makes the competition more equitable.

Are these rule changes going to make it hard for us to get Western and Walker this year? it seems a bit unfair for it to come in this year as the clubs have already spent the time and money on the guys for this years draft. implementing these rule changes in to next years draft would make sense

Definitely not this year. Clubs are proposing any 15yo+ kids in their NGA would still be eligible - so they phase it out over the coming years.

edit - apuchar and I keep writing the same thing, except he is doing it faster and probably better than me :)

So I take it when they say they are beginning it in 2020 that it means from now but it relates to the 15 year olds from now. It could have potentially hurt us this year with Western and Walker pushing in to the late first round early second. It gives us a good chance to really build on our young core group through this year and next years draft and then we should have e very good young core group together.

Well that’s ok if they faze the changes in over a few years. I have it on good authority that our NGA players after that are rubbish.😎

Yeah we should be right by then.

Getting Walker and Western this year and then Farmer and Motlop next year as well as hopefully using our first round picks both years is going to give us a really quick team. Hopefully we can add in some talls somewhere in there as well and fingers crossed we are looking good!

Also O'Driscoll is building very nicely. If he puts a few more games together like he did on the weekend in the seniors he will be right in the thick of it for our first pick. I wonder if the club is looking at potentially downgrading our first to get a few more pick in this draft, i kind of feel like this could be a good year to do this as it is so unknown with the small amount of sample sizes of a lot of players so there will be a lot of different opinions on players from club to club.

Doubt we downgrade. Suspect we won't have the main list space and there is risk of a bid coming for an NGA if our picks are in the teens. I am almost posivite we wont trade 6 if we get it. Seems to be a top 6-7 this year.

We'll take 6/8/9 and then match the NGAs and be done I suspect.

We only have our first and a second round pick this year though don't we from memory? i thought we would need to trade back in to have the picks to pick up Walker and Western as well as then maybe utilize a later pick for a developing tall/ruck. I may have my wires crossed however.

We'll just buy back in using future picks.

We will have a top 10 pick and will get a quality player with it.

Bids for Walker and Western could come as early as late 1st round and probably 2nd round at the latest so our current 2nd rounder (linked to Melb) is probably going to be traded for later picks (to make up points for these guys) - unless we can somehow upgrade it to late first round (unlikely and would cost our future 2nd at least).

Then once those bids happen we can buy back in using future picks to pick up one more (like we did with Freddy).

We'll keep next year's first but be willing to trade out any or all of our other future picks.

It depends on where the bids come. We will have to trade some future picks in (or players out) to get some currency or just match bids and have a points deficit again next year (although I suspect we will only do that if bids are after the 1st round which still seems probably).

The ruck/forward (unless Thilthorp slides to us) could be picked up with the last pick in the draft or a rookie. Unless there is someone we have in mind in which case we will have to trade back in for them.

Don't think we have to move our first for any of that, unless we rate a bloke a lot higher than everyone else and trade down.

Looking at projected finishing spots, I think we Will end up in one of three positions.
15th - pick 4 becomes pick 6
14th - pick 5 becomes pick 8
13th - pick 6 becomes pick 9

My money would be on us beating north, and losing to Richmond, dogs and Melbourne, finishing 14th and getting pick 8.
Hawks are the only team who could overtake us but they’d need to win 2, maybe 3 of their remaining games. Suns will struggle to win again and so we may jump ahead of them.

Our % will get hammered this week and if Hawks turn up they will beat the Crows. Not guaranteed to happen but is likely I think and that will have us swap places.

It will then come down to whether or not we beat the North and whether the Hawks can pinch another (Gold Coast maybe).

I want us to Beat North but the Hawks to win another as well as there is a massive difference between 15th and 14th for us.

Interesting if any of “our” players slide abit if the Vic’s manage to have a couple of games to display the Vic kids. At the moment SA/WA have the show window to them selves. If a couple of Vic kids catch the eye then they will be the new shiny toys everyone wants for Christmas.

I think someone reported that recruiters are still reasonably confident about the Vic kids despite not playing. If they have a Metro vs Country game or two that will likely solidify that.
