I’m torn between what we should and what we could Draft.

Should is the Henry/Cook/Chapman etc

Could is Baldwin scenario.

Why Baldwin

Second knee injury was a partial tear, unrelated to initial ACL, with 6 month recovery. He is already back running and doing the same level of weights he was doing in the preseason. Ie he’s recovered.

Knows how to football (all Aust U16 CHF) and was Captain of winning SA side, . Ie has character!

Start of the year was training with league level at Glenelg not the Colts, most probably wouldn’t have played a colts game.

Whilst I understand the sentiment, I would give up on hoping for Baldwin - the words out of Twomey sounds to me like recruiters are very cold on him, and it is unlikely we would use anything other than a rookie pick on him, and even that is unlikely.

Take it this way (if it may provide psychological therapy) - one of my "We should pick" was Caleb Serong if he fell to our two picks because he was definitely talented, but I really struggled with that internally because at the time I was convinced we already had enough inside midfielders, particularly of the short, not elite kick types and we were getting Henry anyway through NGA as a dynamic small forward....

This year, I think Chapman is the "We should pick.." but part of me goes "but his best position at this stage seems to be as a CHB, and we already have a problem with having too many of those?".....

Re Chapman, I don't see him isolated as the best player at our pick and suggest other players will also be valued. Cook, Carroll, Henry, O'Driscoll, Perkins and others offer positional benefits for us, and Chapman would need to rate significantly higher to be preferred.

I don't remember much of Serong pre-draft but I am beginning not to trust draft watchers ability to rate kicking. Serong is easily above average (mostly because he has composure) and can do it off both legs yet he had knocks for kicking. Contrast Dow or even Andy (to a much lesser extent and improving) whom were rated better than they are at AFL level as juniors.

Totally agree with this and was one of the reasons I was a little cold on him.

He actually has an innate ability to balance himself in a couple of paces and kick fluently. I really don't understand how anyone could look at him and think his kicking is a weakness.

Just goes to show how difficult it must be being a recruiter. It's not just what you see, it's how you interpret it and overlay it across a range of variable factors...the pressure to get it right must be huge.

To be fair, I believe the comments that I remember by the Vic Bigfooty watchers who had seen him the most was that his kicking was generally good; what IMO caused a below average expectations was that his disposal efficiency rating for the TAC cup was poor (from memory low 50%). That is probably what you shouldn't trust, particularly when you are talking of a leading TAC cup inside midfielder where half their kicks will be under pressure anyway.

The next Matthew pavlich. Those were the days
People forget that in Matt Panos draft year he was talked up on BigFooty as the next coming of Matthew Pavlich partially because he was/is from SA and he has about the same height and had kicked a lot of goals leading up to the draft and was a very good kick. On questioning the actual recruiters their opinion was that he didn't have the athletic profile or a relevant position to make it at AFL. He was taken in the rookie draft by the Western Bulldogs but as I recall he was then dropped after two seasons. He then worked hard to change his position from being a key forward to a midfielder, which he has been playing in the SANFL.
Yerp we’ve just replaced “looking for the next pav” no matter where they’re actually rated by the pros to now “must get insert kid name here “ because he plays like fyfe (or even worse because he asked fyfe some questions once)

If the Victorian was one of Macrae, Perkins, Henry, Reid, Holland’s, Cox, Bruhn or Phillips I’d be fine with it. Maybe even Ginnivan or Laurie. Ford, I’d have some reservations but ultimately I’ll back the club to take the best available for us at our pick.
I'll **** my pants if it is Phillips or Hollands (until he does his 2nd knee).

I've said this before but if there is a year to take risk it's this one with so many clubs leary about taking the Vic prospects. The potential rewards are high and we already have a very broad talent base in the list. Particularly since we're talking about pick 13/14/15 here. If this had happened 2017 / 18 / 19 I'd have said no but the rebuild is done.

the rebuild is done.
I think that's a little optimistic. Injuries to key defenders is a pending issue, and our forward line is a work in progress. If everything that I'm place works out we can sort some of our issues out, but if not, We have some work to do.

As Gav points out, it's a little early to declare the rebuild done. Still some big needs to fill.

What exactly do you consider a risk? What player would you take that you consider a risk?
