On a side note, how good is it to see two South Sudanese kids get taken in the first round?

Hopefully our game explodes even more in popularity throughout their community in the coming years, and the game reaps the benefits of more of these naturally gifted kids reaching AFL level.

When an unexpected opportunity presents itself in this equalised competition, you have to take full advantage. This pick 21, with 24 hours of lead in time and several sliders, is such a situation that may only present once every 15 years or so. If we indeed want Johnson, but think he’s still going to be there at pick 22 or 23 or even 24, then we absolutely should slide back a couple of spots and maybe add a F2 or even a pick this year in the 30s. An example might be hawthorns 23 & 26 for 21 and 53, if for example they wanted someone like Sonsie and North did too. The perfect scenario here is some or all of north, Geelong, Hawks or even Richmond wanting the same player still on the board, and that player not being the player we want. If that were the case, start the extortion car!
I thought Sam Mitchell had a boner for Johnson. Multiple sources reported this.

We would have to know what North will do. Butler or Sonsie. I feel we may target Goater with some outside Speed. Your trade is the one I would target:
23 & 26 (or 23 and Hawks F2) for 21

21 Hawks:Johnson
22 North: Butler
23 Freo: Goater
24 Cats: Sonsie
25 Cats: Conway
26 Freo: Motlop, Howes etc.

Assuming we rate Johnson in the top 12-13 players you have to pull the trigger. A midfield of Darcy, Brayshaw, Serong, Erasmus and Johnson for the next decade looks lethal.

Trading 19 has the potential to be the Luke Hodge/Trent Croad scenario all over again, where even if we weren't going to take Johnson at 19 if we trade 19 and he becomes a gun at another club it bites us on the **** for 15 years.

I am still backing the idea that we trade out Pick 21 tomorrow - as wayToGo_ pointed out, there is a lot of players that other clubs probably rated in the 10-15 spots on the board that they will probably be willing to pay a bit to get. Johnson is a very good player out on the field but it also doesn't surprise me that he is still out on the board.

FOMO much? :p I think there might be a few we ranked as Top 15 picks still out on the board, not just Johnson.

Looks good on paper but I wonder if it's too one-paced?

Best reaction video of any Freo player drafted ever. I love how by the end the video is upside down. Lol.

The club should be giving Erasmus’s mates their own section at Optus. Hahaha.

Gotta love a good video of 17 year olds on the piss. :D

If North’s come knocking for our pick 21 is there anything stopping us from saying yes we agree to a swap but hands off Johnson?

I reckon just take johnson or goater. Then a tall with later pick. Hopefully no bid on benning

I’d like for us to trade picks 53 and 61 up into a higher selection. I’ve pointed out St Kilda’s pick 48 as an example. Pick 48 probably stays roughly where it is - hoping Warner or Hough slip through. Maybe Williams - don’t think he’s that highly rated.

If Benning slides through to Category B I’d love us to take another tall (assuming Williams isn’t taken earlier) in the rookie draft. Cripps and Polson are probably still there.

I've read in the lead up, clubs are a little more transparent around this pick, and who they are after.

Clubs can also look to trade up to block another club from trading for the pick.

eg 2019 Brisbane wanted Deven, so traded up 1 spot plus a F2, with Port (+ F4) to essentially block Freo and WCE from trading up for that first pick of night 2 for Deven.

Well if they know who we are taking why would they do the swap? If we make it known we want Johnson they essentially have the first live pick.

It's not against the rules to ask which player they want. It's not against the rules to lie. It's also not against the rules to extort a club trying to buy our pick by saying their current offer is ranked about 5th in the list of options we have - the top four being select Johnson, select Sonsie, select Goater, select Butler.

Private school boys 😉
TBH they’d probably get that pumped if you typed BOOBS on a calculator 🙃

Stoked , bloody good to see .
Surely drafting WA boys is going to get more people to games and increase membership.

Most of the players left are not really that surprising. Clubs will want to trade up, but I don't think they will go nuts, plus we aren't the only club who could field offers. I think the only way we trade our pick is if Hawthorn are desperate enough for Johnson that they offer their two picks in the 20's. But I wouldn't be surprised if they'd be happy with Sonsie plus someone else.
