Something like we want English, but bid on Perryman 1st and take Gallucci

We need mids, can't have enough mids, nek minnit McAsey and Worrell

So if we did want McAsey and Worrell would you prefer we telegraph that in future?

It’s not easy to find good bookends. I think DGB is going to be a star, but I thought Fog gave him a touch up. He is a couple of years away. But that should pay off big time for the Hawks.

It’s way too soon to write off either McAsey or Worrell. Especially with what McAsey had to go through personally.

Mutineer eDPS had high praise for erasmus in some of his latest takes. I have not seen him play at all. You also like Goater for us, what would be Erasmus point of diffetence and if our recruiters went that was should we be expecting big things?
Unfortunately I haven't seen enough of the WA boys yet to pass an informed opinion, from what I have seen Erasmus is more outside than inside and appears very calm and composed with nice skills, I see Ed sees some Hugh McCluggage in Erasmus so that's high praise indeed. Kade Dittmar is another WA mid I'm keen to get a look at.

If he is projected as a very high end outside mid, then he would surely be on the radar for us with the number of inside mids we already have. I think that with a top 4 pick, we are going to get a very very good player there whether or not Horne is gone

And last month Draft Central had Roberts at #4, he’s dropped to #7 in their July rankings as he’s been injured.
That, and others are pushing up as they show more. There were always going to be Vic kids pushing up.

Where we finish will largely depend on two games.

Hawthorn v Collingwood Round 21
Adelaide v Kangas Round 22.

My bets are we finish 14th, which is odds on if we beat Kangas in the last game.

Funnily enough, we actually have the space to win another game other than the Kangas one and still likely finish 14th, as our % quite low.

I'd really love to help kick Port out of the top 4.

Mods - can we pin the last sentence in Weeds post to the top of the thread..it is a great call

I can't believe that Sydney has legitimately put themselves into top 4 contention. They just keep winning!

If them and Brisbane go on heaters to finish off the season they could potentially bump both Port and Melbourne out of the top 4 before finals.

my point wasnt in reference to actual players or their abilities.

Fair enough. But my main response was that I would hope that we wouldn’t know these things in advance. We shouldn’t be stating our plans. So the fact that we talked about mids and didn’t pick them isn’t really that interesting. It may have even been foxing.

Except the majority of us plebs know we have needed high end midfield talent and pleading for a long time.
Instead we've got 3 guys who hack the crap out of it and 3 years on we are still needing a class midfielder or 2.

what’s their record like against other top 8 teams?

I thought a number of years back we rocketed up the ladder but were found wanting in the finals.

simple explanation was that we had a soft draw due to a low finish the year prior.

Fair chance we won’t beat the kangas let alone get within 8 goals of Port

bottom 2 still a huge chance IMO

You missed Gold Coast v Carlton in the games that determine it. Should Gold Coast win that one, it would make it only mathematically possible that we could finish higher than 15th (seeing we play 3 top 4 teams away from home, which considering where we are at, are guaranteed losses).

My ladder predictor has Sydney 4th and Port 5th, but comes down to % which is very close

We took Jones. We have Shoey and Berry. I am with you 100%, if I am in charge from the cheap seats that I sit in, I take a mid too.

But for the record, I have been reading these threads for a few years now and the group think is rarely on the money. Everyone is an expert in hindsight. Those that turn out to be right about one thing are usually wrong about 10 others.

This board apparently were all over Butters and Duursma and we’re absolutely devastated on draft night…. At least that’s how some remember it.

For the record, I’ve wanted us to get a top tier mid for a long time too. But I don’t agree that we have missed as many obvious ones as many people seem to think.

Pretty good actually, of the current top 8 they've beaten WB, Geelong, Bris, GWS and WC.

Ironically it was Port and Melbourne who had beaten them out of the top 8 teams

And isn't hindsight grand eh?

Hindsight is showing many of the reasons why some clubs are or have excelled and why others are failing.
When there are clear patterns of differences in approach over a sustained period of time that leads to success or failure then luck is reduced and expertise and incompetence must become a contributing factor.

Ultimately defending a club that has finished bottom and in the bottom 4 with a midfield made up of the following;

Pick 44 2008 Sloane
Rookie pick 5 2011 Laird
Rookie pick 7 2019 Keays
Rookie pick 9 2014 O'Brien

That is serious neglect of the engine room and no disrespect to these players intended.
So the only player in the last 10 years from the main draft that is a starting midfielder for us is MCrouch and he maybe walking out the door.

Sure its about to change but highlights almost everything this board has been saying for a lot time that we needed A grade midfielders and there's been sh*t loads available before the rookie draft.

The final round of the season is going to be a cracker.

A few predictions here:

I have both Port & Melb finishing outside the top 4, but it will be on %. Sydney and Brisbane have a way easier run home and against teams they should be able to increase their % on, particularity Sydney.

GWS are a good chance against Port if the game is played at Metricon again, but Port also meet us (anything can happen in a Showdown) and Bulldogs in the final round. If Port lose ONE match over the next 4 rounds, and the other teams games go the way they should, then they'll finish outside the top 4.

Port will play one of West Coast, GWS or Richmond in an elimination final. My guess is West Coast.

GWS will be going into the game against Port this weekend as if it's a final, because they're a good chance to make the 8 if they beat them.

Brisbane have 3 fairly easy games before going in against West Coast in their final game. That game should shape a lot of top 8 positions.

Hard to argue with facts like that

there is draft and then development and it’s clear we’ve failed to draft and develop good midfielders , plain to see

Slayed it.

We've seen for years that we were approaching a midfield cliff. Didn't need hindsight at all. It was obvious to anyone with their eyes open.

"Hindsight is grand" is just an excuse for much loved favourites doing a poor job.

Have any of you seen much of Harvey Harrison from North Adelaide? Haven't seen any SANFL U18 games this year, but from reading the AFL Draft Central reports, he seems like a decent player. Is he a draftable prospect?

it’ll depend where the games end up being played.. could be back in adelaide in a fortnight.

norf in adelaide we win.. norf at marvel and you wouldnt put your hard earned on us..

I'd rate him 3rd of the Roosters mids this year behind Hugh Jackson and James Willis personally who I'd take before him. Went back and watched some more of Willis this last week and think I might have underrated him a bit before this with his ability to break from congestion with speed, ball in hand.

I’m sorry have to pass on this one - can’t recall seeing him play. Or I quite possibly have but he hasn’t stood out to me.
