They're likely to spend most of the quarter on the ground, given the freshness of their legs relative to the other players. It would almost certainly be closer to 30 minutes than 15.30 minutes if they spend every second on the field in the quarter

With the first game only 2 days away, they still haven't made up their minds:
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/mar/16/afl-concussion-substitute-rule-call
... a lot of stakeholder management to work through. The first game of the season is only 2 days away FFS!
I love these kinds of random rules.
Personally I think we should introduce 3 zones where 5 players must be in them at all times, but the captain and two vice captains on field are allowed to roam. They have to wear coloured headbands to help the umpire.
Those 3 players can only sub out for certain other players who wear armbands, but only on Sundays or if the player has a brother or uncle that has previously played 50 games for another club.
Violations of these rules are to be officated by the boundary umpires (to help the field umpires of course) but only 2of the 4 can do this and which two can do it is kept secret until they make a call at which point one of the other remaining two is randomly nominated to have the power.
The penalty is a free kick that cannot go forwards.
One can only wonder...Staggering that a supposedly professional organisation two days out from the start of a new season haven't set how many players can take the ground.
What have they been doing the last five months?

Agree - this would ensure teams rarely use as a strategic tactic as well as looking after the player's welfare that they are given adequate time off to recover, particularly for concussions.I do think if an injured player does come off and is substituted, they should be ineligible to play the following week.
Why did I laugh at this? It’s probably true.Hocking is busy asking Geelong what their preference is.
Also...why am I laughing at this?Opposition Covid breach is our best chance imho

Dont laugh if Port made the GF last year, I was prepared to fly to Wuhan and then visit Alberton before Grand Final day.Opposition Covid breach is our best chance imho

I’ve seen it often enough and many times a complete lack of effort to keep it in. I’m aware it’s in the rules but not really policedTechnically, the the rules states if a player is shepherding the ball over the line the field umpire will direct the ball be thrown in.
The rule's been sparingly used though - and to be honest, I haven't seen many teams shepherd the ball over the line.
Imagine by winning this way we end up losing Pick 1 and Horne.Also...why am I laughing at this?![]()

We might see 3 debuts this week too.McDonald, Campbell and Gulden to debut for the Swans this weekend. Are you allowed to play 3 first year debutants in a game? Watching our team selection I was under the impression you could only debut them one at a time every 10 weeks or so?
We might see 3 debuts this week too.
We might see 3 debuts this week too.
Murray would be doubtful with the injury.Rowe
Murray (if he recovers in time)
Who else? Hinge might make his club debut.
The good bookWho'd he play for?
I reckon he comes up, ankles can be funny like that.Murray would be doubtful with the injury.
Hopefully...
Rowe
Worrell
Berry
Or play Berg at CHB & play Thilthorpe.
We should be debuting 3 players.
He could hardly walk so why risk it for game 1 when we have other options?I reckon he comes up, ankles can be funny like that.
Rowe is a lock, Berry's definitely a chance too.
Plenty of ankles are like that though. Hurt like hell for a few minutes then be right. He could hardly walk so why risk it for game 1 when we have other options?
Worrell is fine to play CHB... & looked in good form.Plenty of ankles are like that though. Hurt like hell for a few minutes then be right.
I don't think we've actually got that many defensive options aside from Borlase and Worrell who isn't really a KPD.
Berg in defence is fanciful at this stage
There is absolutely no chance whatsoever this will happenI'd love to see Mackay in the vest all year, as a club come out and say this is the role Davo will play for the team. This is how he will help the younger guys. He could go weeks without playing, that's where his training professionalism will help. Having an experienced head on the bench, having him at huddles, in the rooms. Mature enough to accept the role. Versatile enough to help fill in where needed. Young players won't be wasted the in vest.
This is not like the old sub rule, players will only come on if someone suffers a concussion. We will have to approach this differently from the old sub rule.
Make it work for us.
