Perhaps not, but it's not about collecting the "best" players.
Premierships are won by assembling the best 22 (plus an extra ~5 quality depth).

Then crossing your fingers and hoping you have a decent run with injury and only have to use your depth sparingly.

My point is that:
A. I think it's a fair bet that we've seen the best of what billings is capable of as a player.
B. I also think it's a fair bet that if given the opportunity, we could in 2-3 years be getting billings level of output at half forward from guys like butler or higgins.

As such, we would be closer to a flag in 2-3 years if we got a pick 10 or so for billings and used it on hopefully the NEXT hunter clark/gresh type...
who in 2-3 years would be excellent midfield depth to support our (in theory) elite mids in 2-3 years of bytel, clark, gresh, steele, crouch.

So we've mostly/ totally covered billings absence at half forward (by backing in butts or higgins etc) AND solidified our mid depth in 2023-24 which is essential for a tilt at a flag.

Risky yes, but premierships are built on taking good risks.
Noone wins flags playing it safe.

Deledio and griffin come to mind.

Probably. If it was me I would cut the list hard at the end of the year.

We have a lot of players either about to retire or on the chopping block.

Alabakis
McKernan
Wood
Hunter
Clavarino
Joyce
Geary
Ryder
Roberton
Kent
Hannebery
Frawley
McKenzie

No surprises if any of those retired or were delisted.
Isnt DMac contracted for next year?
Unlikely to pay him out i would have thought

Bloody hell it's hard not to get jealous watching Coleman Jones, chop, Harry Jones and cox.
Interesting that these draftees have made a bigger difference to the bombers than shiel and caldwell
Even watching Amartey today, who'd I'd never heard of… looked like a gun in his second game.

We'd could really do with Heath becoming a star.

4 retire. Another 4 delisted. Take as many kids as possible. Fill the gaps from the "fill" column. I'm being generous with some fills and keeps, but the number of reitred and delisted is hefty enough. One or two moneyball picks would be good too where needed, not the "break glass" type (more Wilkie's less McKernan's).

We could have taken kids mid season. The ones you get for picks 5-8 at the end of the year won't be any better than whats available now.

Brutal.

At least 8. The rest depends on how many we want to bring in. Split picks to get as many top 40 as possible. But maybe keep the first pick, just depends on quality and depth of draft. Moving from pick 6 to 12 plus another might make no difference for us with taking the player we want with that first pick. We need to fill list spots, mostly with "potential". If we go after Bing next year, that will eat up our quality picks... need to take kids this year.

Splitting picks hasn’t worked that well for us over the last 10 years. Then again, neither has taking high draft picks.

I reckon we just swap Pick 6 for as many picks in the 40-50’s and Rookie Drafts as we can get. It’s where we do our best work.

That's what I mean haha. Aren't they the same thing, splitting and swapping?

Let's give some credit where it's due. Higgins could be an A grade half forward soon. Very good pick up, can't wait to see him run around for us for the next decade.
Was fantastic but we talked up him being able to go through the midfield too, when can we see some of that. Could he relieve the pain of losing Gresh

A couple of different scenarios.

So Ross and Billings are coming out of contract and are restricted. Dunstan is out of contract and unrestricted. Say we finish the year with pick 7, and we don't have a second round pick.

Let's say we offer Billings a contract but he wants to go elsewhere, and we don't offer Ross nor Dunstan a contract. What compensation might come our way with these three? And whereabouts in the draft?

He was a gun mid in juniors so who knows... probably needs a bigger tank.

Got a feeling a few might get themselves super fit next off season. This season could be the wake up call we need.
