We used a first rounder last year for Allison. We only have to use 2 in rolling 4 years. We should be OK I'd think wouldn't we?
Depends really. I think we're stuck in the mentality that our 1st pick is really valuable like say pick 5 was.

Should we want a Taranto or Bing type in the next 2 or 3 years it'll cost us our 2 firsts and then some.

Trading this year's will lock us in to having to use next year's, but if we can keep it then we can go shopping with 2x firsts in 2022.

We've also only taken 3 x 18yo draftees in the last two years. We definitely need to take a few kids this year and we shouldn't just rely on Libba to turn sh1t into sugar every single year.

So we could use 2 first on a Taranto or Merrett this year ?

Restricted, but essendon would want to keep him at all costs I reckon
The compo pick is looking like being a top 3-4 pick, so I doubt very much they'd match. We wouldn't be offering them anything better than a top 4 pick.

He's the one I'd be throwing everything at. Especially given the new rules are made for guys who kick it as well as he does.

Him for free >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>guys like Kelly or Taranto for two firsts.

Thats a good point, I didn't think about the compo for him....would be much better than what Adelaide got for crouch

He wouldnt be free. It would be him for 700k-800k for 4-5 years.

Seems like a huge waste of salary cap to me considering he doesn't address our biggest needs moving forward - 2nd key defender and ruck to replace Ryder.

We won’t be bringing in a gun key defender like May or Lever or either a gun ruck.

you can find a key defender that can do a fantastic job as part of a unit for cheap - think Jason Blake.

you then need to decide whether Marshall is a full time ruck or a part time ruck.

recruit based on that decision. Which again, changes the currency you need.

It need only be a 2 year contract on 800k. It's $$$ per year that counts.

I agree that a KPD is the priority but l suspect Roma will be rucking solo post Paddy and we'll bring in another mid..

I personally wouldn’t want to be spending first or second round draft picks at all for another 2 or 3 seasons. I feel like we need to start getting some more elite youth in. Late teen picks can get us another Gresham for example, or Battle.

The only trades I’d be doing would be moneyball ones for aging ruckman to replace Ryder, or otherwise looking at Free Agents like Merrett.

I doubt someone like Merrett would chose somewhere thats only offering him the big money for 2 years when he would be able to get that money on a long term deal elsewhere.

I originally thought Marshall would move into solo ruck, but I think Ratts was super impressed with how Marshall was able to impact up forward and be the most genuinely threatening forward/ruck in the comp. It could all just depend on who out there is available on what route we go wth Marshall.

People don't get it , but if you keep throwing money at players to come to us, sooner or later the Salary cap will be screaming at us.
You can't replace good drafting.

I don't think we need to go chasing any more mids this year , i would be looking for a younger version of Isaac Smith , His run and carry plus goal kicking is what we need off the wing ,
The way i see it we have Jones, Gresh , Crouch , Steele , Clark ,Bytel , Higgins , Byrnes and maybe Sincs who could all play as mids for at least the next 4 years and that's not including Billings who i think is better on a wing , Ross and a broken down Hanners
The game looks like its going to open up and be more free flowing with less stoppages and contested ball to be won so leg speed and a good kick is going to be vital IMO

As Stavro said, you don't need to spend up big on someone for FB or ruck, especially if you're in contention. You can get someone in to fulfil those roles relatively cheaply (including guys near the end, like Ryder/Frawley/Stef Martin), because it's generally much more important to have a dynamite midfield than to have someone elite at FB, or two gun rucks.

And anyway Gawn, Grundy and ROB are locked away now, so getting a Merrett isn't going to stop us getting one of them.

For mine, getting more polish into the midfield is a significant priority- especially under the new rules which pinpoint kicks like Merrett/Kelly can take advantage of- given that Gresh, Jones and Crouch in particular are not good by foot.

The teams that win the premiership every year are the teams who are top 4 in defence, not the teams with the best midfields on paper.

Right now, with our new inclusions and the expected development from someone like Clark, our midfield is good enough to compete with anyone. But our defence is still a big work in progress with obvious holes that need filled if we want to be the best.

With free agency it would have to be a rare player I’d give up two top 12 picks for.

Just as a matter of interest how many player have been traded for two first rounders and how have those trades worked out. Lynch made it to the tigers for free, it will be interesting to see what sort of value Geelong get out of Cameron, Geelong traded 13, 15 and 20 for cameron and two future second rounders.

It seems a ridiculous system where a player hits restricted free agency yet clubs are still paying a kings ransom.

Treloar was the first player to set the two first rounders thing off. Worked out pretty well for them.

We could use a young ruck with good prospects, but I'd be happy to go to the draft and take the best available.
We can never have enough good mids. McKenzie was ....ok on the weekend, if he'd been unavailable we'd have been picking Kent then......

I hated letting Phillips go, to me he was good depth.

Dogs won a flag a few years ago with Fletcher Roberts and Joel Hamling in the key defensive posts (and possibly Zaine Cordy as well, unless he was up forward) and with Jordan Roughead in the ruck.

Think about that for a minute!

I guess if you’re lucky enough to have father sons and academy players rated as first rounders coming in then maybe you can afford to overpay.

St Kilda haven’t been that lucky so I really place a premium on our first round picks. You need to keep taking draft picks to help control your salary cap as well. We’ve killed it with some late picks and mature age players, obviously you keep looking and hope to get lucky but generally the cream goes early.
