He could be a gun but he had no form to go off and really doesn't even look like we knew what sort of player he might be if he grew when he was not playing footy. It was a massive gamble that still makes zero sense to me. He looks like throwing a dart not actual planning.

Highmore was a good player but really also made very little sense considering that Wilkie was nearly first picked every week since we got him and he looks like he'll have to dislodge him or Coffield to get regular games. We can't even get Battle a consistent spot and we hit another in-between utility. Strange list management to me.

Then we just pulled up stumps and didn't even take a risk on a highly touted kid that slipped down the order. Supposedly we were keeping spots open for the midseason draft where all these slipped kids with little exposed form would be waiting....only they weren't there.
I always looked at the Highmore pick as more a depth pick up to cover that third defender/intercepting role rather than an instant best 22 player. In the event something happened to either of them last year, we didn't have anyone on the list suited to that role so we got Highmore to play it. Also provides us with the opportunity to develop Coffield as someone who can go up the field or even play that wing role, though we don't seem to have done that this pre season.

We weren't alone in leaving spots for the SPP period or for the mid season draft. The majority of clubs left at least one open for these periods because of the little exposed form of the back end of the draft.

What's everyone's thoughts on having a crack at Darcy Fogarty from the Crows. Hasn't really had a consistent crack at it and I think would be a more than handy forward to have down there with King and Membrey

We probably would have, but it's not as if our reaction on makes something a good or bad decision.

As I said, give the kid some time to adjust and show what he can do. If he doesn't look anywhere near it in 2-3 years time, then the decision warrants criticism. But at least give him time to suck in his own right before piling on top of him.

Poulter looks good and hopefully for Collingwood's sake, they have a long term player on their hands. But being ready first doing guarantee someone will be long term, quality player - Dunstan was outstanding in his first year and looked like a gun in the making. It took Jordan Ridley (taken at a similar pick in the draft) until his 4th year before he consistently made Essendon's best 22.

There is no need to be making such strong judgements on players 10 rounds into their afl career, especially when their draft year was Covid affected.
Ben Long. Another player we were just told to "give time", should've taken Shai Bolton, should've taken Poulter.

flipping no. We don't need more utilities. Already said it it this very thread but our one and only focus should be on bringing in flipping midfielders. Everyone's rattled out the same flipping line for years now "get the spine sorted and then the middle". Well? We've got king marshall dougal ryder membrey battle frawley carlisle and a bunch of other KPPs and we're still shit. Meanwhile the bulldogs are making flipping josh bruce look good because the whole time we got sucked in to drafting Paddy McCartins they were drafting Bonts and Mcraes and Smiths. Enough picking meh players with potential. Give me the best available mid at every ****ing pick for the next 5 years.

in that case would you be happy letting billings go if it means we get 2 top 10 picks to draft midfielders?

Im a Freo supporter and I come in peace. Adam Cerra is yet to sign with us and I don't want to trade him but if we did then he would fit your needs perfectly. Obviously Brad Hill would not be enjoying his football with such a large contract and so much pressure to perform. If he was prepared to take a significant pay cut then I think he would come back to freo. So my hypothetical trade is Brad Hill and your first pick provided its not top 3 for Adam Cerra. To make the deal work I think you would have to pay part of Hills contract, say 150,000ish and he would have to be prepared to take a $200,000 pay cut. The deal only happens if Brad Hill is truly desperate to get out of the Melbourne football bubble where he must be copping a heap of abuse when out in public.

Surely you jest?
Not a chance we are sending Brad back, and especially with a first round pick AND have to pay some of his salary, after what we gave up to get him. Even though Cerra looks great.

Besides that, however, we have to use our first pick in the draft this year if I’m not mistaken.

Get some sleep, school in the morning.

I know there is this on-going obsession with us drafting midfielders with every single pick.

But considering we are rolling out McKernan, Frawley and Hunter when our first choice KPPs are injured, doesn't that suggest we need more young KPPs on our list?
Wouldn't matter if we drafted young kpp's, we wouldn't be playing them anyway.

Third consecutive week Tom Morris is pushing this storyline - this article the most transparent. Pretty much what we discuss here.

However from memory... Tom has some good links with the club doesn’t he?🙃
And he is yet to produce anything on the subject with any substance in it other than North could, potentially, maybe, might have a look at it.

Someone with links to the club is pushing the Billings narrative the moment it started to look like letting him go would give us the best potential benefit.

Very common practice in American sports is for clubs to get the beat writers to drop articles pushing narratives. That’s what this is. Just outlining the state of play and how it might benefit the club and get a few supporters on board with what will be an unpopular opinion. A week ago I was smashed on here for proposing this.

A fair few posters are now coming around to the idea. This is how it’s done mass scale.

You also suggested that we should deliberately tank if we got to 4-6 which we are now.

Hill in for 4 picks and Acres

Billings out for 1 pick, 1st or 2nd rounder

That is a massive net loss and the club is back to being a rabble.

I suggested playing the kids with our run home looking the way it does - means we won’t win many more games.

Not sure what Hill has to do with Billings. But I’m trying to improve us going forward.

Winning a flag/contending will be in Kings prime. I’ll take the hit this season to get him surrounded with quality for 10 year.
