What do we think about Gresham and Paton entering their peak and coming back better than ever?
Or do we think they won't even get back to where they were?
From what I've heard they are two of the worst injuries to return from to get back to high level performance.
And Gresham wasn't the best kick going around before this.
It's a tough reality to think about, but I hope we're at least planning for the worst. Paton really hurts, he's a player you want next to you in the trenches.

Gresham might have to play small forward IMO. His body looks very fragile. Paton will struggle to get back to 100% probably, looked bad. Reminded me of when Nathan Brown snapped his leg, he was never the same again. Probably about 75% of what he was. Jones also a worry, he misses a lot of footy and his pace is his asset.

Would we move them on then? I hate that I'm saying it.

We've had enough of injury prone players who can't stay on the park.

Paton is far from injury prone, but if we're looking at 75%... is that even good enough for Sandy?

I don't have the answers or a crystal ball, I just hope we're planning for the worst.

I don't think so, we just have to hope they come good. Injured players don't get picks of any worth. Their potential to come good keeps us holding on. Probably just need to get kids, draft some good ones to make them the depth and a bonus if they play. Bynes could end up another Jones if we pump games into him. If Jones plays 12 games year he's bonus. Paton may be one who has no complications and comes back as good as he was. Just have to cross our fingers and hope. I still think Gresham was a brilliant small forward and if he can stay fit with a lighter load he could still be a huge asset.

No one is trading for Gresham.

However Kevin Durant looks pretty good from his Achilles recovery.

One close to home, Zac Williams. You don’t get paid 900k if you can’t play high level football post an Achilles tear. Let’s hope this is Gresh.

GWS have been keen on Gresham in the past haven’t they? And they have a few picks this year.

Not that I hope that it happens, but just raising it as a discussion point.

Have been told the club is going to invest massively in the draft at the end of 2021. Probably around 5-6 picks and all 18-19 year olds are the targets. 3-4 picks in top 30. Will be done.

Besides Ryder, all those players we picked up the last 2 years at trade time are going to be around for many years still. We still have a very good core in the 20 something bracket. Got good players in Maxy King, Ronnie Byrnes and Bytel coming through too.

All is not lost.

how are we going to get 3 more picks inside the top 30?

3-4 picks in the top 30 means mass changes...

That's losing Billings, Ross, Dunstan (late pick) and probably another one...

Ross and Dunstan I don't mind losing

Only happens if Billings and Ross both get decent offers from elsewhere (band 3 compensation which is after our 2nd round pick), we don't take any other free agents, and we find someone else of value to trade out.

Players on the list worth a second rounder or better:

Marshall
Steele
King
Clark
Howard
Crouch
Higgins
Membrey
Billings (also FA)
Ross (also FA)
Hill - probably, hasn't helped himself this year though
Sinclair - probably, playing well at the moment
Gresham - probably, someone would be assuming he recovers well
Coffield - probably, someone would pay a second rounder and hope they can make him a serious player
Bytel - probably, taking into account potential
Byrnes - probably, taking into account potential
Battle - probably, has the attributes so might be able to sneak a second rounder
Wilkie - maybe
Butler - maybe
Highmore - maybe, at a stretch if we play him and he looks good

Players we'd be happy to trade but we wouldn't get a second rounder: Long, D-Mac, Wood, Kent, Lonie, McKernan, Dunstan, Webster.

So I guess pick which of those you'd want to trade.

IMO if we were remodelling the list we'd let go of Billings and Ross, consider trading Membrey because he's getting on, shop around Hill and Coffield and Battle. Still not sure we'd get a lot of takers at a compelling price though.

Quite a few injuries are more common in other sports and they seem to do a good job in rehab.

Gresham has value but I’d love to see him back in our forward line with king in full flight. Paton is a unicorn on our list, he’s quick, very good overhead, good foot skills and makes very good decisions with and without the ball.

I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that a fit Gresham and Paton are definitely premiership quality players and give me some hope we can be a truly competitive team.

Billings is down to who comes for him and what they offer, if it’s band one that’s too rich for us and gets us a pick in the top 10.

Battle assuming we can get a decent second round pick then I’m happy enough to trade him. He simply doesn’t have a first choice position in our side that suits his talents. I’m also pretty confident that whilst he’s potentially a very good player we’re not letting go of a future star.

In reality we‘ll listen to offers on most players but unless they’re stupidity in our favour it doesn’t make a lot is sense to trade them. If Gresham heads back to the forward line then obviously Lonie and potentially even butler could be moved. I’m massively disappointed in butler this year, I think we’ve seen his limitations and why the tigers gave him away.

To me a big part of our issue is our constant churn, look at the Dogs and they have half a dozen guys who have played serious AFL games but get pushed out to VFL to fit kids. Mitch Wallis was close to AA last year... this year he's playing VFL as depth. Guys like Lipinski, Jong, Schhache etc would all be in our best side this year and they have top kids that were drafted very selectively to meet needs. They target traded in Bruce and Keath for very little and both are playing close to A grade footy. Keath is rated higher than Dougal in player ratings and Bruce is second in the Coleman despite everyone here glad to see him gone.

If we were to do something similar we would have held guys like Bruce even Newnes and pushed them to the VFL as kids developed and made them step aside. The Dogs were the only club interested in Bruce, if we'd held him to a contract they would have lost interest, worst case he had a big year and another club paid up big for him. Instead we probably got someone like Parker or Hind with the pick and moved them on after developing them for a couple of seasons and taking games off kids.

Hickey another, losing him really served no purpose, worst case he's a back up in reserve instead of Hunter. Every time you move a player on and have to replace him you end up having to invest picks, energy, time and money into finding another player. You have to settle on a plan and build two solid lists with a lot of potential developing in your seconds side. We are nowhere near the Dogs, Lions or Melbourne (who are the best up and coming lists right now) or even Port who are a good spread of experience and youth but we should be aiming to model off those clubs.

Those clubs are creating sustained success worthy sides. We are not even worthy of the conversation yet, We are Hawthorn and Carlton style but perhaps with a few better pieces in different spots. Sides like Sydney and Adelaide have a better youth side and if they develop right we will fall behind them over the next couple of years. We really need some seriously good management assistance. A Neil Balme type to slap them all into line and make them focus. Our onfield team is pretty much modelling the administration at the moment.

Not sure we can draft much with the bottle cap and empty match box we get for Dunstan.

Could always use him in a play to get Sam Reid, who fits our criteria when we are looking for a player as listed.

1/ Sydney Swans player
2/ Will be 30yo next season
3/ Has hamstring injury

Kind of worries me with both players on how they return & for their sake I hope they both return stable enough to be able to play at their top level again.

Losing Battle for a second would be a backwards step.

This place has lost of absolute plot.

Multiple players have could back completely fine from bad leg breaks and Achilles in recent years. Jarryd Roughead, Tom Mitchell and Zac Williams among them. This notion they won't come back as good of a player is outdated.

And then this hunt for a 2nd round pick. Going to go out on a limb and suggest we aren't planing on moving on Billings, Membrey, Gresham, Coffield, Ross and Battle just to get some 2nd round action.

I really feel for Paton. I was stoked we had a no-nonsense, hard as diamond, skilled player in the back 6 and then the most St. Kilda of injuries happens to him.... poor bloke.

Why do people think Coffield is going? We drafted him early, he had a stellar year last year, and yes he’s out of form currently but he’s a kid still. Even if you wanted to trade him wouldn’t you get better value back once he’d developed into a more consistent player? And by that time we’d want him on our list. Not to mention, we should not be letting go of young promising players at the moment!! The club clearly wants him there with Clark, King and co. don’t forget that Coff and Clark were resigned and that was announced at the same time earlier this year.

Hickey worked out bad, i think the scenario was that we had 3 rucks and Marshall, so we traded the one someone wanted.
Both Pierce and Longer then had concussion injuries.
