Much better forfeiting the cap money than making dumb decisions. From the moment we heard in the interest in Hannebery we all knew that this was going to be the outcome. His body was not up to the demands of professional football.
To give him 4 years and $3M + was absolutely ridiculous.

As I said, worth the risk possibly with money we were going to lose.
You didn’t answer as to who else we could have got instead.
And that’s because I think there was nobody else wanting to come.
Anyway, probably been done to death.

We playing that game are we?

I quoted your post W2L and was not meant as a go at you.
I thought it interesting that a poster who I respect had highlighted Hannebery's injury concerns before we recruited him.
If you go back I am sure there would be plenty of posts from me supporting the trade.

I don’t think Hannebery is anywhere near the top wage earners in the comp. It was $800k a year & was front loaded.

It wasn’t an okay trade but it not a trade that has brought the club to its knees, destroyed club culture, etc like some have stated.

Its not even in the ball park of trades like Beames or Gibbs.

I haven't seen anyone claim he brought the club to it's knees and destroyed culture, just people questioning that he's being portrayed as a major asset off field even if he doesn't play. It is in the ball park of embarrassing trades as is Hill who is in the top 5 top paid players in the league and offers around the same out put as Acres or Newnes. Carlton paying Mitch McGovern and Jack Martin as top players is equally as embarrassing but I'd just like to not pay huge money for no real advantage. It might not dispirit the group but it dispirits me.

Wouldn't forfeiting the cap means we forfeit the lot and therefore the cap we 'banked' for two years was forfeited?

Don't see that as a great trading strategy. Sure pay it to others but forfeit it?

But it's still better to not spend it even if you banked it unless it's a distinct advantage. It was big gamble and a very low chance of working out.

But if not spent up to 95%, not only is the 5% not banked it is forfeited.

Really stupid to wreck your chances of future trading

Open to correction here, but as I understand it after a couple of years you can no longer use it ie bank it and you just lose it. You’re not going to be able to create a war chest by just rolling it over year after year.

TBH - if we don’t trade out and draft two young top 10 kids, we will be in no mans land for years. We won’t bottom out and we won’t get the players needed to climb. It’s now or never.

We need to draft midfielders too, no more half back flankers, 3rd tall forwards like Battle that we play elsewhere or speculative key forwards like Paddy.

Trade out? What do you mean? Trade out our first pick or use Billings compo? If we water down another pick and **** this up it's almost ground up rebuild again.

I think clubs can save up to the previous two years rolling. For example:

2018 - 95% used
2019 - 97%
2020 - 98%
2021 - 105%

If we've used this cap space in 2019 an 2020, we have banked 5% under the cap (3% and 2%), so we can utilise that in 2021 for a cap of 105%. What we banked in 2018 would've expired and gone unused. But then, from my understanding, in 2022 we would need to get the cap back under 100% again!

"The rule that allows clubs to spend over the salary cap by up to five per cent, if they have underspent on players in the two previous seasons"

Trade out players 8.e Billing’s that aren’t going to take us where we need to go. We need elite players. Our top end is shocking compared to the top 8 sides. The only way to get these players is draft in reality. Elite free agents or trades are few and far between.

See I dispute this ‘Hill offers the same as Newnes & Acres’ stuff.

He definitely played some absolute stinkers but he’s also been outstanding in a number of games; to a level that Newnes & the Goat never did.

McGov is an embarrassment but Martin has been great for the cheats.

Supporters need to get over what players are paid. If it makes you feel better just think all of your membership coin has gone to Crouch, Steele or Doug.

We were desperate for leaders. We still are.

Hanners was supposed to be our Luke Hodge at Brissie. It hasn’t worked out… people need to build a bridge & move on.

The Harry hindsights have still not accepted that Hanners had not suffered a soft tissue at Sydney… his knee was shot.

Also fair to say that apart from his first season, he'd played 19 or more games every year except for his last at Sydney. No history of soft tissue, but a bung knee which would probably require missing a game here and there. Pretty sure we'd have been hoping to get him on the ground for 15-or-so games a year (maybe missing 1 in 3 or 4), rather than single digits and endless rehab. It hasn't played out how we'd hoped, but it was a case of attempting to bring in some experience and leadership from an undeniably winning program, with limited choices of players who would even come to our club.

You have to understand the amount of biomechanical experts and experts in physiological study we have in big footy. They are in abundance around here, especially when something doesn't work out.

Martin has been okay but not $1 million a year good.

And until we go back and draft stars we'll remain unattractive and be forced to buy up shit broken down players because we're desperate. Elite planning.

I can agree with this, I'm still unsure whether it's drafting stars or creating stars though. Hopefully the last 4 years recruits can change that

I still worry about our development. We should at least improve some of this stuff if the review cuts deep enough. Players seem to go backwards in our system and play better once they leave. Target someone in an elite system and steal their IP is just good business IMO.

I'm not sold on that on though, Jack Newnes isn't any more than he was at stkilda. You could say Bruce is having a good year, but he was shite last year. Plays well when winning, barely sighted when they lose.
Hind, you would say is the exception, but heis also 26 and if starts to struggle will be gone pretty quickly you would suggest.
They started paying attention to himself week and went at 65% de which is pretty woeful for a back flanker
