I think any list can look top notch on its day. If everyone in the 22 plays at 100% of their ability while a better opposition is cruising at 70% the underdog wins. What makes a good team over a mediocre one is the team's 50% performance. When our players play at their average we lose to a lot of other teams. The top teams can have off days and still be equal to the lesser ones and say in a grand final a mediocre list played to the best of their ability and the premium team played to the best of their ability, the better team wins.

I think for a lot of our list, they need to be playing to almost their peak just to keep up with some of the better players in the league. Low ceilings.

That's the difference between us and the really top sides. We don't have a guy like Bont or Danger or Petracca or Dusty that just tuck the team under their arm and run through an army. Those absolute game changing stars can mean a good side can look great when they aren't playing their best footy.

And yet that freo game was arguably the best we played as a team all year.
But Dunstan didn’t play?

I don't think it meant anything to them and one of the clubs cost themselves a higher pick and it wasn't Freo. That win meant they dropped below us on percentage. If we'd lost we would have finished below Richmond on percentage. I think they have pick 6. I was hoping we'd lose it but enjoyed going out on.a high anyway.

Crouch and Dunstan from my own vision, there was barely anything between them but maybe i wasn't looking closely enough? The one area that stood out was Dunstans ability to stand up to bigger bodies while i would frequently see Jones and Crouch pushed around and man handled. This to a good degree ceased when Dunstan came into the team as he was giving it back at the stoppages.

I do fear what will happen in this space next year when it's just Steele and only Steele.

As for his kicking it long, i am neither here, nor there, as those kicks generally ended up as a forward stoppage for us which is fine by me. Is Crouch a better user? Yes he is but he also takes the safe option far more often.
Crouch taking the safe option is a positive, Dunstan taking the risky option is usually disastrous…. I remember vividly the fast break through the middle of the ground v swans at the SCG - Dunstan gathers & what should have been a long handball over the top, turned into Luke trying a risky round the corner kick which was smothered & rebounded where the Swans goaled.

I would have stamped his papers right there & then

He's had a sh*t career so anyone taking him is basing it on his existing club dumping him after 11 weeks of good footy. I can see why his value is sh*t. That's not my argument though. I'm saying he would have been worth keeping listed. It has gone beyond that though and he doesn't want to stay. He might revert to type so you wouldn't want to pay up much for him but his 11 games this year were his best footy and of a very high standard.

Yep that's the nail on the head, a very good season superseded by years of playing below his potential.

He always had a bad tank and coupled with bad disposal he's lucky he even made it to this year. He finally turns it around but it's to late, 'cya, we don't care how good you were this year'. I hope it works out for him wherever he ends up and he keeps the same fitness levels he showed this year. As for us moving forward i guess we got to have faith the club has a good plan for our midfield next year and beyond.

I look over our list and i just can't see where the improvement comes from in the midfield unless the penny drops with Clark. He will be 23 at the start of next year and the one player we need to go next level.

Freo were still alive in the finals race so they should have had something to play for.

Anyone know if this person has any credibility at all.
Most twitter accounts are full of crap but a curious statement with regard to Ladhams

It’s rubbish.

They don’t really want Ladhams, but they want our pick 9 for him 🤦🏻‍♂️

5th in the B&F or was in some sort of conspiracy by the coaches to make him look good? Also got Brownlow votes which for some reason now conveniently shows the worth of a player with some.

Bloody hell, I look at the trading of the club on the whole. We had been a moribund MoR mediocre team for most of a decade, the recruiting team brings in Ryder, Howard, Jones, Hill, and Butler for 6 &59 and some junk futures losing Bruce (who is a pretty GOP AFL player) and a shot Steven and Acres.

Look at those players, an AA tap ruckman, a Key Backman, a quick mid, a very quick triple premiership player Wingman/HBF'er with a huge tank and a hard tackling goal kicking small forward, all first 22, Howard consistant and very good, Butler nearly AA last season and while down was the best small defender in the comp this year, paddy, we thought two year but we will get a bonus third, Jones, injured a lot unfortunately but when there is very important with centre clearances and has so real toe and grunt and Hill, who has not been the match winner some expected but his second year has been much more consistent culminating in a top 5 B&F, not bad for a bust.

I would take them all again, and I would take Crouch and Higgins as well.

Still others want us to stay MoR and keep mediocre players like Acres, Newnes and Dunstan

We rebuilt using draft capital that could have netted us top kids. We will only know how it works out by looking back in a few years. Lethlean stripped the list out and had to find a missing generation that we culled. It may have netted us short term middling over long term excellence. It's either mad genius or dumb management. Either way Lethers must have hated the list when he did his review.

8 players listed when he arrived should be definitely playing next year....out of a list of 46. We have moved on a generation of mediocrity but we haven't got stars still so it potentially has the same outcome. We can only judge it in 5 years I guess. King looks like the best thing we have done to improve in 20 years and he was drafted. Sharman next....drafted.

I actually asked would you do the Hill deal with hindsight. I certainly wouldn't but at least he's contributing now.

The Bulldogs had one of those guys doing that on the weekend and they lost by 74 points.

Geelong had one of those guys getting 30 disposals (16 contested) and 10 clearances in the prelim and they lost
by 83 points.

The big difference between both those teams and Melbourne was that Melbourne had the top 3 in ranking points in the GF and 8 of the top 13, and the top 5 in the prelim and 7 of the top 11.

And that’s the big difference between them and us.

Those teams have not only a “superstar”, but he’s surrounded by others of AA calibre. There isn’t a huge gap between that guy and their next 4-5 best, like there was this year in particular for us.

It was Steele and then daylight.

As reflected by our B&F, where Sincs (who didn’t get a Brownlow vote and wouldn’t have gotten many more coaches votes) came 2nd, Skunk came 3rd, Wilkie 4th and Hill 5th.

If others step up closer to AA level to give Steele much better support then we’ll be up there as well. Like we almost were last year (and might have been, had we not lost Ryder and Carlisle in particular for the semi).

Steele improving the 10% or whatever from back-to-back top 5 finishes in the Brownlow and coaches votes to out-and-out “superstar” isn’t going to shoot us 6-8 spots up the ladder.

Having 3-5 others really step up to at least AA squad level most likely would though. Even if Steele just stayed where he is.

Yep right now it is possible but highly unlikely that we could win a flag right now with this list no changes. Obviously we’ll be working to remedy that soon but right now I think we’d need our team to play at their 100% best and hope that whoever we face wasn’t their 100%. There’s no room for slackers in our best 22 though since we do lack the high end.

Randomness,

Something that never gets mentioned, we took Mcevoy and the next pick was Dangerfield. So that's Danger, Petracca and Bont that went next pick that are still playing and are their sides best player. All three should have a brownlow by careers end. Would be hard to replicate that in the next thousand years!

Kicking it long works fine ( when Sharman is within 30m of the dropzone ) .
Sharman could make anything work though. A bit like having the cheat codes on in a video game. Say someone sprays a kick in completely the wrong direction and Sharman just instinctively knows that someone like Ross is likely to do it and he’s already standing in that spot. It gets recorded as an effective disposal and goal assist. He might raise our disposal efficiency across the board all on his own

Ladhams isn't coming to us.

Will NSW get a compo pick for Gladys resigning or is she counted as a delisted free agent? We could do a pick swap with NSW

Clark/Coff in front of Naughton who would be pretty handy at CHB right now
