I'd happy trade Long for a 3rd rounder.

He isnt near the top of the pecking order for either position - half back or as a small forward.

And list spot wise, I think we would get just as much having Kent or Lonie on the list next year as we would having Long, plus we would then get another draft pick to use.

No. Second rounder. It seems we’re happy to keep him and he is contracted and contented at the club.

Apparently there are several clubs interested so we can nominate our terms. If Essendon want him but offer scraps then don’t even bother talking to them.

Running ability just isn’t enough though. I don’t even really understand why we’re trying him on the wing. He is a 193cm bloke with no speed and not much agility. And now that Sharman has shown more in five matches as a key forward and Highmore in 13 as a key defender, Battle is in no man’s land. He’s an interesting prospect and a natural sort of footballer but we aren’t good enough to carry a player like Battle in the 22 every match, we need proper runners for that spot. Not sure what the future holds for him.
I think the writing is on the wall for him. Wasn't he dropped for poor disposal after the Richmond game? I think we should cut our losses with him

Looks like he is staying as no one would give us a second rounder for him , well if they do they are stupid

I doubt anyone here would be willing for us to give a 2nd rounder for an equivalent player. Why would you expect to then get that in return?

A player can be as big and strong as you want but if they lack skill or footy smarts, they will never be a match winner.

You cant just shove someone into the midfield because they are tall and expect them to be good because they are the height of Bont or Petrecca. Coffield's natural skill set lends him to being an intercept defender. We've seen them try to make Battle a midfielder because of this obsession with tall wings yet he sucks at it because it doesn't match what he is good at.
You could also say you could have all the midfield talent in the world, but your not going to be breaking out of any stoppages if your 75kgs. Unless you have some freak type of power to weight ratio

Good shout. Kent is statistically better than Long in basically everything except tackling; and if we keep him it will be on the basis that he plays VFL unless we have injuries or he is absolutely smashing down the door; not this will he / won't he with Long.

I think from Long's perspective it's a great idea to get a fresh start, he has suffered from being played all over the park. He could win a Brownlow next year playing for Essendon and it wouldn't bother me greatly because there's no way he'll be winning one for the Saints in 2022.
The problem is none of Lonie, Kent or Long can regularly do any one of these things required to hold down a spot:
Kick goals
Set up goals
Apply enough pressure
Tackle

A second rounder could be up to pick 40 this year.

personally wouldn'ttrade him for anything over 30.

I think we tend to forget how good Clark and Coff have looked. Really bullish on both of them and think they can be top 20 players in the comp.

Coff had a really poor season but by season's end he looked very solid again. Clark's was ruined by injury but he did things again that just screamed elite to me.
With our run of injuries, changes in personnel and general shitness, the reality is that the kids we've brought in have been asked to do too much and not allowed to play with the freedom offered to those in competent teams. I think this is in no small part one of the reasons for the lack of a breakout season.

Freeman? Hannerbery?
A top 10 pick traded two years later. And Hanners was a best 22 player, Vice Captain at Sydney and a very accomplished player.

Long is 5 years into his career, a fringe player who played more terrible than good games this year and a walking suspension.

We'd be laughing if someone gave us a pick before pick 40 for Long.

No we wouldn't. Quite simply, the guy is contracted, we need something back that reflects that. If we got a third and 4th equilivent to a second, that would be fine for the NGA's.

If a team want him, the need to pay the contract premium especially if we aren't keen to trade him. Same with Coffield. Would you trade him for some crap 2nd when he was a top ten pick?

He was pick 25 so he is worth around 40 or so now , Like buying a yearling for a Million and turns out it cant run , worth nothing now no matter what you paid for it

Coffield has a lot more runs on the board than Long for starters. But I doubt a club would offer a pick high enough to make it worth trading Coffield.

Anyway so much for our 'fringe' players holding no interest
Dunstan two offers (a month a go)
Coffield, lots of interest
Long, lots of interest.
Who has offered Dunstan a contract?

Last I heard he was likely to be picked up as a rookie or as a DFA once trade period is over and clubs see how much room they have on their list?

Had two offers about a month or so back @ 2 years wanted three. Don't know where they stand now, these things change day by day let alone from weeks ago.

No whispers at all on Ross though.

And for the record I’d be very unhappy to let Coff go.

Very different to what has been reported over the last few weeks.

Hopefully you are right though.

I reckon he'd be a fool to knock back a 2 year deal if it was on the table.

Let Battle go for an early second.
Let Long for for a second.
Or an upgrade on our first pick (rules out Essendon).

We don't need to accept unders and we should keep our contracted players for depth.

If Ross went too, we should target another first round pick if we end up flush with picks. WB need more points for example
