Heard nothing about Ross at all. Club very keen to hang on to Coffield.

As we should be. 21 years old and a top 10 pick - not exactly like we have a fortune of these.

So much is maturity I reckon. The penny should’ve dropped after this season, although not all his games were terrible. Lots to like about both Clark and Coff - pointless to compare them to others, they all develop at their own rate, but we’ve certainly seen enough from both to see that they can play.

If he's got greedy saying no to a 2 year deal than he's a fool IMO.

Caldwell was very different. We didn't, we didn't pull our contract he just ended up with a better offer.

No we pulled our offer when we landed Crounch. Caldwell had agreed to terms with us.

The problem is none of Lonie, Kent or Long can regularly do any one of these things required to hold down a spot:
Kick goals
Set up goals
Apply enough pressure
Tackle
Out of those 3,
Lonie is a one trick pony, really predicable!
Long is up and down with form and when he is down its really obvious, give away too many soft frees
Kent has the build, pace and a thumping left foot, just needs to get his defensive side of his game up

Even from his Melbourne days the problem with Kent is that he is injury prone. Never gets a proper run at it.

Depends on when he said no - if it was a few days before Brownlow night his manager is a genius. By my count he actually finished 25th equal overall in the Brownlow (with about ~10 others on 11 votes as well); he'll get a three year deal somewhere I should think. He got as many votes as Dusty this year!

No, we still had a contract there but it was smaller than Essendons and the arrival of Crouch made it unlikely he'd slot straight into the midfield.

This from Cal Twomey

While the Giants lifted their offer to four years to keep Caldwell, the Bombers also had competition for him in Melbourne, with St Kilda also interested. The Saints won the commitment of free agent Brad Crouch, but also presented Caldwell with an offer.

"It was a hard decision actually. I made the right decision I feel like, but at the time, I grew up a Saints supporter and people thought that would be the case of choosing St Kilda," Caldwell said.

"But choosing Essendon, like I said, when I spoke to Truck and Adrian they had a real clear future and a clear plan which I liked and in the end that was what got me over the line in coming to the club."

Its a midfield award. It means nothing. Max King got 3 votes, Sinclair not one. he is not better than Crouch and Crouch got only 5 votes. Basing a players worth on Brownlow votes isn't really accurate IMO.

I doubt anyone here would be willing for us to give a 2nd rounder for an equivalent player. Why would you expect to then get that in return?

Clubs know he is contracted but they are still pursuing him. They obviously rate him more than the majority on this board.

Time will tell. Doesn't sound like there's a huge amount of interest in him if you listen to Sam Edmund, who seems to have better mail than anyone.

I doubt he gets 3 years anywhere.

Not accurate from what I heard. We had an offer that he was happy with but then we pulled it. We may have offered a smaller contract afterwards but once we got Crouch, we were bbasically out.

First I've heard of it.

Multiple journo's at the time suggesting he chose Essendon over Saints for those reasons.

I didn't hear once that we'd pulled an offer.

I'd imagine if that were actually true it would be reported.

Fair enough, the point was, that things change over trade period. I am hoping Dunstan gets a 3 year deal so we get some kind of compo, I suppose we will eventually see.

I was hungover as fu** yesterday so I decided to lay on the couch and watch our round one game.

There was on instance where Clark was at the back of a stoppage and ended up with the footy about 70 out. He just effortessy turned onto his left foot and put a neat little pass into the only space inside 50 for Membrey to run onto.

Not sure we have anyone else in our midfield that can do that.

He also showed his ability to win the contest footy (12) and clearances (7)

That was the last full game he played as a mid. He didn't even get the opportunity to go into half the amount of centre bounces in any other game as he did against the Giants.

He may well have to get fitter and work harder, but to me he seems the most likely to make a difference in our midfield that anyone on our list.

Petracca was a fat lazy player 2 years ago.
Yep I'd say Clark and Bytel. Also, I think it was end of 2018 when Clark told Richo he wanted more midfield time and Richo said he needs to hit some fitness kpis before he can and he didn't expect him to be able to reach it for another year. He hit the kpi that summer. So it would seem he is very driven to play midfield.

Bytel has shown already shown some great skills on the stoppage and contested side. Needs to work on his outside game.

Problem is how are we going to get decent midfield time into either of them without injuries, provided they can come back fit enough after the summer.

On proven and potential I'd say Steele, Gresh, Clark and Bytel would be our best midfield. But need Gresh to remain injury free and need Clark and Bytel to have big preseasons and prove themselves

I'd find room for Jones and crouch ahead of them

The silence is deafening about Dunstan. Dont think the brownlow votes are going to make much difference now. A 3 year deal would be very good....more than very good.

There must be a part to the Dunstan story we haven’t been told.

There uis a bit of a victim mentality with him. Refuses to try to play another position so not seen as for the playing group, sacrificing his own game for the group (like Hill did by going to HBF and Crounch did by going to HF to allow a once position player in Dunstan to play)

Wont follow team rules in looking to handball to runners going past and continually bombs it into the fifty without any strategy.

Cant run both ways, he defensive side is terrible and when he was dropped for the final game he cracked the shits at the coach which is never a good career prospect.
he is a capable AFL player in a limited way but it is best if he ply's his trade at a different club. Hope he goes well.

Right now yes, but I'm talking about potential. I think with the attributes Clark and Bytel have, they have potential to become better players than either Jones or Crouch who are unlikely to get much better than what you get now.
Agree. Bytel is a bit of a like for like with crouch. Clark is the one with a serious point of difference that we need in the mid rotations, but would like to see him move from potential to reality over a preseason

Bytels foot skills make Crouch look like Spook tho. Some of his work in tight is fairly arousing as well (wow, that doesn't sound good!!)
