Not disputing you, but where is it coming from that Spook refused to play different position or follow team rules. Would seem very strange for an afl level footballer of experience to do that. If you asked Lonie to play ruck or something ridiculous I could understand it.
Joffa boy is spot on.

I've been harsh on Long, but maybe the problem is how we're playing him. I remember him being a handy forward capable of some good marks and talented goals early on. Switching him back and forward could have disrupted him and he's only being used as a defensive forward now. Maybe he just needs to be allowed to play his natural game. Plucking a few arsey marks and goals while belting 110kg ruckman with his 80kg frame.

That being said though he's OOC next year and he'll go for literally nothing this time next year.

The only trade I would consider is Coffield to north for pick 2
We must keep Nick Coffield
Why was his name even floated as a trade?

Just people spitballing how the Saints are planning to get into the first round again. He's arguably expendable with the backline depth we have. Not saying I want to trade him at all btw.

I’d consider trading coff for a shot at drafting an elite mid but I don’t think his value would be anywhere near that after a poor year.
depends what you count as an elite mid. I wouldn't trade a coffield for a billings type elite mid but a petracca or bont type yes even a toby greene type.

Has Mason Wood got another contract? There's an article saying a "Mason Wood is a part of our AFLW coaching staff"

Is there another Mason Wood? He's supposedly in charge of stregnth and conditioning

Always liked Longy. Remember the game against GWS when he was nominated for the rising star. Looked like he had a bright future. Love his toughness but he doesn’t get enough of the pill. In the right team reckon he will go alright. Unfortunately, the right team is not us, I think.

His name came up in an article read just after the season finished, but I cannot find the article. That is why I threw his name up for discussion. I didn’t just make it up 👍🏼

Also the club just released a statement that they want to try and improve our draft hand. Unless we split picks, only way to do that is trade a player out

How about this as a speculative trade if the club wants a 2nd round draft pick.

Wilkie to Port. They have just got rid of Clurey as well and we have excess of the 3rd tall type of player. Highmore, Battle or Coff could play his role.

He is a very solid player. A couple of seasons of the 100 game milestone as well. But if you want to get you need to give and he is a type we have plenty of.

I know this is just speculative, but disposing of Wilkie like that would shatter the core of the club. Not only is he an exceptionally consistent defender, he is a leader and a clubman who has worked hard to get where he is. Unless he requests a trade back home (assuming in SA) he’s a St.Kilda man. Battle is leaving before him, especially if it’s only for a second rounder.

Fair enough, not sure Battle would get us much or if there would be interest. Wilkie is in the leadership group, but it's not like he is the vc. Also it's his 3rd season with us - not like he is a 150 game, although he plays like it. Very solid performer, but that's why we may get something for him. Does has some limitations in that he is fairly slow and not tall enough to play kpd. If you could use the pick you got for him for a good kpd..

Yep fair points. Has he even missed a game though? I’m not sure. As for KPD, he goes alright - he sure did a number on Tex this year. No secret we could use a CHB, but Wilkie goes alright with what he’s been dealt thus far. Of course he’s limited, but unlike some of our other players, his benefits far outweigh his limitations.

Edit: the other thing is that I didn’t even really notice Battle when he was out of the side in the second half of the year. Don’t think I could say the same for Wilkie as it stands.

Our best bet would be to try get 14 and 18 off of the Lions but the problem with that is we have to give up more than just Pick 9. What would we be able to package up to get that?

Edit: Struggle to see how we would get anything more than a late 2nd early 3rd for Long and perhaps the same for Battle unfortunately.

It's a bit dangerous trading Coff (or anyone) when he looked unfit in a team which mostly looked unfit too. This is the time of year when you hear so and so had a niggle or played injured all season and it explains a few things... I haven't heard that with Coff, but he was running in concrete boots all year.

If another club picks him up you can absolutely guarantee he will get some speed back in the legs and look a dominant player. I'd probably take his physique from his draft year over how he is today. To me he now looks like a mid sized bull, not agile and quick enough to play on the smalls, and not tall enough for the talls. A mid sized bull doesn't fit in anywhere really, except an inside mid. Maybe we were moulding him into a Rampe type? But it looks like it's cost him what were his strengths.

I don't not what we're doing with Coff, but hopefully the new fitness guy can get his physique corrected for his best position. It might just be trimming down and getting his floating intercept game back. Maybe I'm talking crap, I don't know.

After watching that put him straight into the midfield. Those highlights look more dynamic than any of our current midfielders.

Getting rid of a best 22 player for a untried kid is stupid unless it is a top 10 pick.

I like the pressure that Long brings to the forward line. He does a lot right in that space. But I feel like he just isn’t a natural goal kicker. He lacks creativity and when he does hit the scoreboard it feels laboured and clumsy, in a way that can cause the whole forward line to stutter.

I can’t even think of another player in the AFL we could ask him to model his game on. He’s definitely more Geary than Heeney.

If he’s still on our list next year and I was his coach I would recommend he try to find a way to execute his role and imprint his own love of the game on it, whatever that is. I would hope it involved a whole heap of high jinking, high marking, run down tackling, goal kicking and fist pumping.

Do your best 22 and then list notable absences. I dont see how someone like Ross is even wanted anymore...

Paton Howard Wilkie
Webster ? Sinclair
Hill Steele Dmac
Billings Membrey Gresham
Butler King Marshall
Ryder Crouch Jones
Higgins Clark Byrnes Coffield

Players that could justify a game:
Sharman Connolly Geary Long Highmore Hanneberry Bytel Wood Battle

Probably highlights why players like Long and Battle are also in discussions on a trade.

Then add in a high first rounder which we will want to atleast blood. Gonna make things super competitive.

After stabilising the list with senior talent NOW is DEFINITELY the time to trade out some players and recycle through through draft. Even if the call is a 50/50 one and or a young player last taken with a decent pick.

Nows the time to take a punt. High risk. High reward.
