To me he looks like he's being pushed to play a role when he looks best playing with freedom. A guy we know is a financial sponsor at the Dogs through his family business. He gets to the club a lot and reckons Bevo is a gun coach because he tries to get players to find their flair. He encourages the players to do things that make the footy they play free and fun. Long looks like the type that needs that kind of environment. He looks bored and restrained. When he used to go for screamers and tackle like a maniac or snap impossible shots he was glorious. He looks straight jacketed.

That's basically what I was trying to say except without the ability to word use good. Nicely summed up.

I'd still trade him though

A friends nephew is close mates with him. He said Caldy was really pissed off with us. As soon as we had Crouch we stopped communicating with his camp, he had told everyone he was coming to the Saints but the Bombers upped the offer late, they went back to the Saints and they just ignored them. Might be saving face after going after the cash but sounds like he thought we were amateurs.
A friend's nephew ay?

What'ya think CaptainRisky ?

There is way more chance of Sharman playing a CHF role in future than Marshall, which is why I wrote it that way
In a Future role i thought that's what we were getting Bing for so for Now id rather Marshall there and id prefer Sharman close to goal as Bird said ,

We were amateurs lol. He went for the cash, we got Crouch and basically pulled the offer. What would you call 'stopped communicating' with him? Do they lose his phone number?
We offered a contract, we got Crouch, Essendon offered more, we said, nah, thats fine, we aren't interested any more. Maybe Caldwell should not tell 'everyone' he is going to a club until the papaerwork is signed.

I know who the amateur looks like. Anyway we have seemingly dodge a bullet. Injury prone.

Meh, not fussed missing Caldwell. Essendon secured him with two 2nd rounders…. Not sure we had the currency to nab him unless we gave up the pick we used to get Matty Allison
That's what it would have cost no doubt.

At the time I really wanted him, I think if he gets a good run he'll be a very good footballer.

Once he had that injury early in the year I probably felt a bit relieved we didn't get him.

Could end up being another Freeman with his body?

This is what gets me, longy has never had a great season yet I keep hearing it. I think you’d struggle to find where he had a great game. He’s looked like he might be a player for 50 plus games but hasn’t really delivered much at all, he’d need to really turn things around to be in our best 22.
I thought he was great off half back last year. Had a good game even this year off half back Vs the Giants. We really missed him in the Richmond final.

Lloyd basically but a hole in any idea of getting Bing to fill a void down back.

but also the AFL article just reads like him sh*t talking the Saints to make it seem like Essendon is a better place for Bing to go

BJ and Dal just discussed him. They seemed more positive about Bing at the Saints working. Lloyd saying you can't have two 200cm+ forwards in the same line up but BJ and Dal said "Well, who's to say it wouldn't work if it's never been tried?" If 1 x King is hard to matchup two two must be impossible.

We had to use our first so we can have two picks in four years. We need two picks for Bing next year.

Not a chance, Wilkie could be AA. He is that good and something from nothing, wouldn't trade him for anything less than a Top 10 pick.

Watch him closely, he is a gun

Agree he is a gun player, which is why we could get a good draft pick for him. The club has said they want to improve their draft hand. Our fringe players are unlikely to get us much and 3rd tall defenders is an area we have excess to requirements and we could definitely use a kpd. Wilkie tries his heart out and does a decent job of it, but it's a fairly strong consensus that we need a good chb.

The 'Can't play two 200cm+ forwards' is a lazy narrative.

We currently play our best football with King (202cm) and Marshall (201cm) up forward. So moving Marshall back to the ruck full time, and bringing in Bing to replace Marshall up forward isn't drastically changing the dynamic up forward that we already have.

So, we have tried two 200cm plus forwards and seen that it works really well.

Saints have a couple of things that the 17 other teams doesn't have re King.

1) An identical twin brother
2) Whole family are avidSaints supporters
3) The story being sold by the Saints to him using the above two and where we can go with them.

Even Dal Santo calls us Saint.Kilda. Bloody hell why doesn't anyone know what our actual name is? Even an ex player.

Stuff it, just select one each week, and let them play a half each, nobody would know, would kick 150 goals.

Do your best 22 and then list notable absences. I dont see how someone like Ross is even wanted anymore...

Paton Howard Wilkie
Webster ? Sinclair
Hill Steele Dmac
Billings Membrey Gresham
Butler King Marshall
Ryder Crouch Jones
Higgins Clark Byrnes Coffield

Players that could justify a game:
Sharman Connolly Geary Long Highmore Hanneberry Bytel Wood Battle

Probably highlights why players like Long and Battle are also in discussions on a trade.

Then add in a high first rounder which we will want to atleast blood. Gonna make things super competitive.

After stabilising the list with senior talent NOW is DEFINITELY the time to trade out some players and recycle through through draft. Even if the call is a 50/50 one and or a young player last taken with a decent pick.

Nows the time to take a punt. High risk. High reward.
Wait... Sharman and Highmore not in our best 22? Are you ok?

We’re going to have to get creative to get another early pick or we’re going to move a player on that actually has value and is a proven commodity. To me, Membrey as a footballer is expendable, but Membrey as a club person probably isn’t. I’d say there’d be 5 players who are off limits and the rest probably don’t have the value we need to get early picks.

Skunk is very unfairly maligned on here for some reason. Yes he does my head in when he gets the ball on the wing & waits an eternity to move it on but he’s critically important to the team.

Yes we have #SuperCooper as a promising young tall but Skunk is still a crucial part of our forward set up not to mention a wonderful club man.

If you are going to question players not being in someone's best 22, you also need to then say you who would take out for those 2 players to be in.

Sharman had a great 3 and a half games, and he could easily cement a spot up forward next year. But it isnt unreasonable from him to not be in someones best 22 with King, Marshall and Membrey all in the front half already.

Same with Highmore. Could easily put himself into the best 22. But with a spot in the team left for a genuine centre half back, it isnt unreasonable to have Wilkie and Coffield as the 3rd tall/interceptor in front of Highmore.
