Not Saints related, but from Jon Ralph.

Cats early trade request for Jordan Clark was pick 8. Fair to say that was considered overs by Dockers. Their offer was pick 27. Freo need to find a pick in between. Lots of common ground but Clark is contracted.

I know it's just an opener from Geelong but geez that makes me a bit angry. Bstrds. Quite a number of WA players worthy of pick 27 in the draft and played nearly as much AFL as Clark.. know what I'd be doing if I was Belly.

interesting to hear trade radio state the similarities between the dees and us. they noted that melbourne like us had two trade periods back to back where they traded their first rounders away.

but here is where there is a difference and is what is making things hard for us now. melbourne still made good on their mid range picks, specifically their 2nd rounders. they got 3-4 premiership players in those two years they traded them away. fritz and petty are two i can remember but there were another two.

we didnt do this. in fact we seem to have a pretty strong form line of trading away future 2nd rounders. which is why we are in the tight spot we are in now.

we'd love to upgrade our pick, but we have no 2nd rounder to help get that deal done. we've essentially traded away the supporting picks needed to help stuff happen with the first rounder.

now that there is restrictions on player movement (reduced cap which means clubs are tight) everything is now about pick trades. we have backed our selves into a corner where the depth we have, won't get any attractive deals to leave AND we don't have picks to facilitate any big moves.

To me the big difference beytween them and us is the lack of top end players at the Saints. You have Gawn, Petracca, Oliver, Salem, May and Lever who would all be top 10 in the comp by position. 5 of them are in the top 50 in AFL stats insider list including number 1 and 7. Steele is still our only actualised gun.

True but it looks really messy and isn't a good thing no matter how people try to spin it. We've done a lot to build a more professional image and test things are a step backwards. Playing out a bust up in the media is not ideal.
Thru my eyes.....the club has been very professional.......they have not responded to Luke's spray a few weeks back.......and why would they.

The club made a decision that Luke wasn't part of the plan going foward.

Luke unfortunately doesn't agree with their assessment and dumped on the club accordingly.

Some of the hysteria in the footy media on Luke leaving us is laughable.

I imagine that over his 8 years at the club he has been very well paid considering who was on our list over his journey and what we had to pay with the TPP.

Players are let go by every club....every year.

Him dumping on the club was very disappointing but I still wish him well.

You don’t know that, you’re assuming nobody wanted him. If he played for Geelong you’d say how do they do it, he took a team friendly deal or some other spin.

He reportedly signed for two with an option for a third making him a saint for life. Fact coaches gives votes in our b&f he’s won two and finished seventh this year so whilst you don’t rate him our coaching staff must.

You're right. I'm guessing.

Based on the fact he's had this contract in front of him for some time and has only just signed.

I think it's a pretty safe bet to assume other clubs didn't go after him.

The fact he's won 2 b&fs says a lot about where we've been at.

Anyway. He's still a Saint. It is what it is. My hope is he's seen as depth and only plays if injuries dictate we need him.

Don’t know & don’t care. He was playing putrid footy & the team was playing putrid footy. A statement needed to be made. From the outside it looked awful seeing other blokes scape goated whilst Hill took home 850k doing sweet fa. Can only imagine the discontent it caused within the playing group (I’m comparing to a work environment where you have a bloke not lifting his weight). Coach needed to send a message. The timing could not have been more perfect. Look at the way the Dees have handled team selection. That’s the difference between a pro environment & amateur hour. Ratts lost a lot of respect from plenty of supporters the way he managed the team this year. Big year ahead for him I Hill.

Oh, cool. Don't care who was available, just do it. Sounds reasonable. Should have popped old Jam Tins Dunstan on a wing & watched him waddle after his opponent.

You could make an equal argument that a coach should stand by a player and see him through a tough spot. Hill's back half of the season showed that Ratts' tactics were correct.

Who was scapegoated? Lonie? Not the people's champion and leader of wayward kicking Dunstan? Perish the thought of marking a bloke's papers who has let us down with the same rubbish for 7 years!

The Dees? They've barely made a change all year! Who was dropped on form? And just to make the point; Melb could afford to drop blokes on form thanks to being kissed on the d1ck by the injury gods... virtually a full list available all year.

We didn't. Otherwise quite a few could have found their way to Beach Rd Oval.

To take the question at face value:

You don't get Crouch in and then add Mitchell 12 months later. Crouch addressed that need, and Mitchell is overrated.

Take pick 9 to the draft and get the best available mid, with the possible chance of reaching 5-6 picks on your draft board for a big bodied mid (not Martin or Ross big bodied but more like Cripps or Bont) who may develop a little later.

See how many of the academy kids you can get for under value. Adding a draft pick for this purpose would be nice, but would probably cost Long.

Sign Talia or Hartley as a DFA for KPP depth.

Re-sign Kent, Hunter and Joyce, delist Lonie.

Ben Hobbs is the man IMO.

Looks like a Clayton Oliver clone.

I think people are just afraid to put their hopes and dreams into the basket of him being our Dusty. He very well could come back in and get 15 contested possessions a game while kicking 1.5 goals a game, transforming our midfield and giving us a new look. We could also build him up over the off season and he's come back not quite right or prone to recurring injury.

Gresh is our Meatball

Steele is our Dusty

One thing Gres is not is a great field kick.

Gresh is inconsistent more than anything. Can hit up short passes exceptionally well but struggles to hit the side of a barn when he tries to moose the ball.

He's an absolute jet though... fk we've missed him the last 2 years.

Hope we still get to see him become the player he was tracking towards being.

Yep. I really don’t mind carrying him in terms of disposal if he’s going to have impact in other ways. Bad disposal is only an issue when the only thing you can contribute is getting the ball and kicking it a certain number of times a week

Any ideas on what kind of coin Seb would have resigned on?

Been a loyal saint and decent player but we really need to be replacing him in the side if we're to move forward, I hope it was a pretty modest contract with incentives.

Yes, Fritch is important, but don't tell me Steele isn't.

Put Lever, May, Petracca and Clarry around our 2nd and third rounders and we look like genius's

All of a sudden players we've taken late in the draft look a lot better

To me we have had to import the generation of players missed through poor drafting under Trout. It costs us picks which mean we miss out on the chance to draft our own, there is a bit of living in debt.

It doesn't matter how you get them but we have to find some high end talent or we will be a middling side. Steele and Higgins are two of our better recruits but Higgins also cost us a our first round down grade last year as well. It will be good when we get to the day that we can start to use the draft picks assigned to us.
