I just don't think Starse is up to the midfield role. I don't think he's fast enough, has the skills or the vision to play mid. We're yet to see Joyce, and I really rate him......or young berry.

I'm really keen to keep Ballenden, I think he could become a real weapon when he works out he's a monster. I wouldn't be going with any new rucks, I think long term Lane looks a cut above, so I'd be keen on seeing him play some games in the middle of next year. In the mean time I'd be second rucking Jack Payne in a Ratugolea type roll. Having a ruck forward is a huge bonus.

Also super keen on young McFadyen, a shit year this year coming back from a knee, the Covid situation with regards to fixtures and also playing mainly as a forward in an undermaned and losing team. I like his awareness, his overhead marking, his natural ability to find space and his running. I couldn't believe Cockatoo got the nod in the last couple of games over McFadyen. To me Cocky has lost all his dash, and that's his game apart from his crunching tackles.

I'd be looking to offload Daniher to some unsuspecting fools with the promise he could kick 1 goal a game and none in finals and be a devastating ruck as well  .

There's another player in our VFL side who's a standout in my view and that's Bruce Revell. I don't know anything about the guy but he's a natural footballer with some real dash, A natural winger. Does anyone here know anything about Bruce?

He has a good kick, strong mark, good burst and speed - all attributes that would make him a good midfielder or half back flanker.

All well and good but if he can't find the footy we're not getting much value

I just can't remember seeing a game where Starce has accumulated the footy to the extent necessary to play a midfield role, even at reserves or underage
levels. I remember the knock on him in his draft year was that he didn't get a lot of the ball. I don't mind the idea of him as a mid that thinks defence first (not necessarily a tagger but just more defensively minded) but he's got to pull his weight with finding the footy at some point - and that's something he's just not done to date.

No issue with seeing it trialed though and he definitely has some nice attributes to work with. But some guys just don't have the instincts to play on ball. Maybe Starce is one of them.

He's never been much of an accumulator in the reserves or underage.

I think this is where the comparison with Yeo falls down. From memory, after the U18 champs Yeo went back to the WA Colts and averaged 25+ disposals to finish off the year, before averaging ~15 disposals per year in his first two seasons with us. I don't think Starcevich has shown that level of offensive or accumulation ability.

Likewise I've been a bit surprised at all the calls for Starc to the M/F . He's very good in the backline. He doesn't strike me as a M/F type at all. Given though he's still young and shows great discipline and persistence. I see him being a core player in our defensive unit for a while longer yet.

If he's getting 12 touches as a lockdown defender I'm confident he could find enough of the footy if given the opportunity.

Nothing wrong with giving Starcevich a crack in the middle in the pre season, if he's looking promising try him in the early rounds, can always send him back if it's not working out.

Personally I think Fages will leave him back for the time being.

Chris Johnson son has been delisted surely the Lions will look at rookie listing him

Probably unlikely given our lack of list spots. Struggled this year in the VFL from all reports coming off his ACL injury. Will probably need a few good years at state level to get another look in.

McCarthy looked a bit of a weapon on the few occasions we threw him into the centre bounce. Had good instincts for where it was going and that extra burst of acceleration. And that's about it for him in the M/F.

Even that didn't work earlier in this season

I think the next step for Starc is to help takeover Brichall's distributing role along with Coleman, I believe Prior could really help with our ball use and rebound as well if he gets the nod to replace Birch's spot in the side.

Sorry to hear it but if we'd taken him at the time he may well have been delisted in any event. Better it's done by them and not us. His under age form was only modest but Essendon were so intent on bidding against us.

i must admit that I like Prior much more than I thought I would. He seems to have some versatility about him and just a skill set and size that might develop into something quite important for us. Until you see him up against some of our other players it is easy to forget that he is a decent size.

Do you feel the same about Linc McCarthy?

No?

Unless we try Starce as a mid or on the HBF, we won't know of he's capable of doing so.

What harm is there trialing it in the pre season?

Not saying there's any harm (apart from a minor setback in him developing as a Backman) just that there is very little evidence to suggest he'll be able to transition to being a full time midfielder

Na. When everyone else was on the nose as well.

Just because a champion like Yeo progressed to the M/F there's a school of thought that any decent player can take the next step. I see Rayner being a bigger chance than Starc and McCarthy but not guaranteed he will be more than a part time player in the MF either.

What evidence was there to suggest he's develop into a good lockdown when he was drafted as a mid?

Carter Michael might be a future option down back as well if he keeps developing. Seems to have a decent pace, awareness and disposal. Left footers off half back are a valuable asset as we know.

Probably little but it's a much simpler role

He was drafted as a mid but always a project pick. Even Bailey can't break into being a full time mid and hes much more developed in that role than Starce
