There is a bit building up in a few threads.
I am a bit on the fence. There have been IMO some concerning selections this year but in general his work has been good.
One thing I find interesting is Murphy worked under Andrew Russell at the Hawks and they had good results but there has been some criticism at stages of Russell at the Blues because of continual soft tissue injuries which would most likely be voiced again this year if they where not playing up to their potnetial.
Of course Russell was with us for the 2000 flag and also at Port for their 2004 flag.

The recurring injuries is pretty interesting….feels like an unusually high number of players have suffered a recurrence first game back. Both soft tissue and also ankles I think?

In the absence of any evidence I don’t have strong feelings but the antennae are up.

Also interesting that Cox, Jones and Reid have all struggled to get their bodies right - all tall and lean, all trying to add and carry bulk. Would suggest all three have added 10kg+ in last 12 months.

Are the injuries just what happens in this phase or could it all have been managed better?

I always circle the GWS game as a test of where the group is at fitness wise and I think this bloke is in the cross hairs after a pissweak running performance like that.

GWS are absolutely nowhere but what they do have is a clutch of about half a dozen of the best runners you’re ever likely to see and they ****ing burnt us today.

Good little reality check to remind us that we actually cannot run for shit and need to do a hell of a lot of work on it. Winning games has definitely papered over it of late.

Question is…..is the issue our training program or that We simply haven’t drafted players with the DNA to be be elite AFL runners?

My guess would be the latter. We have undervalued the importance of players (especially mids) with dominant physical traits for many years now.

If you have a small midfield you better pray to god they can run. Ours can’t. It’s a big limitation, and it’s also where our highest paid players are…

Has something happened.

I actually think it may be that we’ve been hesitant to push the limits of the group post saga, and even if Murphy is actually doing a good job we’re probably only going to see that bear fruit in 18 months time, the soft tissue injuries may just be because he’s treating them like proper athletes and they aren’t used to it.

That’s me with my crackpot hat on though.

But he worked at Hawthorn during a successful period [emoji849]

Did not hear anyone complaining when we hired the bloke from the most successful club of recent times. Where do we go next. Hire the bloke from division 4 under 18 .

Yeah but he was working under someone. It wasn’t his program at hawthorn it was russell’s, he’s categorically failed this year. Time to move on.

We're stupid to be even thinking about playing Shiel and Caldwell. Just put all 6 of these guys on ice ffs.

If you look at the top 2-3 sides at the end of every season, one thing they have in common is continuity and a healthy playing list. Players learn together, grow together, create chemistry together and perform together week in week out over 2-3 seasons.

Conversely Essendon has been f*$ked by injuries to half our team year after year for at least the past 5-6 years. We've had no chance to build that continuity, development, chemistry, understanding of game plan etc, let alone perform at our peak for a whole season.

The question is, is that just bad luck? We all complained about Crow and cheered when he finally got the arse. Now we have a new strength and conditioning coach and we're in exactly the same position and now calling for Murphy's head.

Bad luck or Murphy's law...?

Can anyone tell me why we do the injury update so much later than everyone else?
Shits and giggles.

I think Sunday games have something to do with it but it is, as we have previously discussed, a bit of a cluster****.

Also I think the club is still advertising for a head of digital so possibly a bit down on manpower.
