Certainly a decent crowd. Closer to ‘normal’ than the previous games in Melbourne. Although it’s worth noting this was a Kangaroos members replacement game so that is usually worth 3-4,000 more ‘away’ fans attending. Good crowd though.

Hawthorn get a lot of flak for poor crowds when the wheels full off the bandwagon but their crowds are actually very solid when not shunted to Sunday Twilight, Mother’s Day or running head to head with the Socceroos World Cup fixtures against France.

With a 20 per cent hit on attendances (46,000 instead of 38,000), the Belgrave and Lilydale train lines down and with car parking closed this is another example.

The MCC members dining room was fully booked today which I found surprising (but perhaps they scale back walks up thanks to Covid?)

Hopefully once Kennett finally leaves the building, the club repairs it’s relationship with HQ, finally starts investing in youth all this will become more apparent.

The Hawks as we stand have appeared to have squandered the golden (excuse pun) opportunity to capitalise on its successful era and entrench itself as the family club with huge attendances growth as a major anchor MCG tenant.

Ian Dicker had a wonderful vision along these lines and I suspect he may be looking at its current situation with a sense that an opportunity has been lost. Whilst membership is strong and elevated by its positioning in the Apple Isle, it’s hard not to wonder what might have been if it never went to Tasmania and joined Richmond, Collingwood and Melbourne at the G.

Now it’s Melbourne shaping as a similar club with this opportunity. Although I’m not convinced Pert and his team are skilled enough to capitalise on its on field success in a way that Essendon (1990’s), Collingwood and Richmond have done in recent decades to elevate their attendances, membership and overall scale of support.

Now the Hawks join Carlton and Essendon in a looming bun fight to secure additional MCG home games between now and 2030. The AFL ownership of Marvel provides and opportunity for these clubs to leverage their popularity to strike a lucrative deal in time with Marvel Stadium. The AFL also hold a whip hand which means negotiations will be interesting. And the AFL creates the fixture above all else.

The next round of venue negotiations for clubs promises to be worth following. Clubs that can negotiate well will secure highly lucrative deals for their fanbase. Given the Hawks tenure in Tasmania now appears to have a time limit, it must position itself to endure it delivers a good balance taking into account the needs of its supporter base, it’s financial future and how best to align its business plan to the most appropriate venue(s) to ensure its future success is assured.

Not saying it was not right, but it certainly looked and felt an 80k crowd and was a bit surprised when the attendance was put up.

There was plenty of empty seating on level 4 of the GSS in the AFL members. Also, the top level of the Ponsford (GA) was also showing several rows empty at the top. Worth noting, when a section of GA isn’t near capacity, usually means there’s many more empty seats in the rows below the empty ones because spectators haven’t had to take the best available seat with many others to choose. These seats sort of silently accumulate to account for the reason why the attendance figure posted disappoints.

Broadly speaking, it’s rare that an MCG crowd exceeds 80,000 with the GA not at capacity (meaning the 5,000 standing room not even opened up) and the back 10-12 rows of the AFL members empty as well.

You can add Adelaide Oval to that as well 28,000 is a very poor crowd for the Crows on a perfect day and the Gabba crowd was unders as well!

Overall the crowds were ok considering we are still coping with Covid esp the 25,000 GWS home game crowd at the Olympic Stadium in Sydney btw the NRL the next day only got 13,000 at the same venue!

That guess of a 10% drop holds up pretty well across the board - except for the Adelaide / Freo game (and obviously the restricted Perth crowd).

Every other game if you add 10% you get a great figure, but the Crows game needs to be boosted by more than 50% just to get to their average against Freo at Adelaide Oval (44,300). Not sure what the public mood re covid is like in SA at the moment as that's a concerning drop.

• highest Melb/WB match ever

• 3rd highest Coll game at Docklands for 10 years (less than 1k from 1st)

Largely agree. Although I still maintain the Cats / Bombers crowd was a little more disappointing than you make out based on this fixtures averages.

I’m sure the average was brought down by the 41,000 only at the MCG between these sides in 2016 when the Bombers didn’t have a team.

I still think the 63,000 crowd in that 2019 encounter is the best benchmark for this matchup. Both sides entering both encounters with optimism, something many of the previous encounters the last several years have had with Essendon more often than not outside finals calculations.

No drama take your time and it doesn't have to be too deep, say last season of both as a ballpark figure.

Trying to get an idea of how much crossover audience their might be between the two leagues, and TV viewing would be one indicator.

AFL opening round scores on Seven

Coverage reached 4.6 million people nationally


The 2022 AFL Premiership Season opening round scored high on the Seven Network last week, reaching 4.6 million people nationally.

The Grand Final rematch between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs on Wednesday kicked off Seven’s 2022 AFL coverage, reaching 2.26 million viewers nationally.

The epic clash peaked at 1.09 million viewers across Australia, with the match averaging 734,000 viewers, up 9% on the 2021 AFL series average.

The Thursday match between Carlton and Richmond drew 627,000 viewers nationally and peaked at 926,000, while Friday night’s St Kilda vs. Collingwood clash was watched by 665,000 people nationally and peaked at 904,000.

The Friday match was the #1 non-news program of the night, dominated its timeslot and reached 1.98 million viewers nationally. The huge numbers helped Seven win Friday night with a 51% network commercial share across Australia.

On Saturday, 421,000 people nationally tuned into Seven’s live and free coverage of Brisbane vs. Port Adelaide. It was the #1 non-news program of the night in 25 to 54s, #1 in its timeslot in all key demos and reached 1.61 million viewers nationally.

The round one matches ranked as the #1 program in Melbourne on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night.

Seven’s coverage captured 78% of the overall TV audience for round one, including 78% of all viewers in Melbourne and 79% in Adelaide.

Thursday night was one of the loudest games I have personally ever attended (incl some finals). The Carlton crowd were insane. Definitely felt a lot more than the figure. Great atmosphere.

Round 1 saw an average audience of 360,000 for Foxtel and Kayo, up 47% on 2021 R1.

This made it the highest rating AFL Round 1 of all-time and the number two rating regular-season AFL round of all-time.

The Melbourne Demons v Western Bulldogs season opener saw an average audience on Foxtel and Kayo of 470,000, up 28% on the 2021 AFL season opener.

The game was the highest rating AFL regular season match of all-time on subscription television, up 6% on the previous highest rating regular AFL season match (R12 2021).

It was 31 degrees yesterday, some people were passing out and receiving treatment on the eastern side of the oval, 3:40 start time didn’t help either. Will be interesting to see what attendance will get for the showdown.
