I know i wouldn't be having 4+ meetings, giving a tour of the club and be in regular touch with a player that we don't have a Draft pick for, particularly if we were so intent on using Pick 5 for Rankine from some way out.

Surely you can concede it doesn't make much sense?

Unless it’s nothing out of the ordinary for prominent SA draftees, which then negates the idea that we are uniquely attached to this kid

If it’s just a hedge, in case he works out, on the off chance he might be worth getting back, then it entirely negates the idea we are particularly enamoured with him

Otherwise it’s hard to see how we’ve fallen in love with a player we’ve gone out of our way not to get

Wait until the combine, he's much quicker than people realise. Also probably closer to 193-194 cm now and probably still growing
Very good call. He's quick.

Anyway, given volbeats record I’m happy to believe someone close to our drafting decisions has some questions about Phillipou’s attitude.

That’s good to know, and genuinely I say thanks.

But I also think our recruiting team have bad judgement, and a bad record, and I have absolutely no faith in them making good decisions on ‘attitude’.

Given the choice between a person who is a bit full of themself but an absolutely fanatically dedicated competitor (eg Buckley) and a nice, polite humble kid (Macasey) I know which one I’m going for.

The only scenario that in my mind justifies spending Pick 5 on Rankine if we WERE interested in Phillips is where, come draft night, we didn't want a situation where Pick 6 arrives and Phillipou is already off the board. We're left with a Pick in the range of several Vic Metro/Geelong Falcons prospects, and are no guarantee to be able to trade back into 2023 if we needed to. I understand clubs generally pick for 'best available' in the first round, but we're probably far enough into our rebuild to be targeting specific list needs, which we've seen clubs do more recently at the higher end of the draft.
I wouldn't be surprised if Essendon took Phillipou at 4 (5). They are also in need of a tall attacking mid the same as us. After them though it is probably the Saints as the next one at 9 (10) who would be the biggest chance of taking him. But you are right that there was no guarantee that he would still be there at our pick 5 anyway.

I am hoping we have a plan in place with some of the teams with first round picks to trade for our next years first if he is still there at a certain pick.

The question is, will our first pick next year be better than Phillipou?

If we used next years pick on Rankine then we could have been caught with our pants down. If Phillipou goes in the top 5 picks then we would be using pick 6 on a Vic Metro kid or over reaching for an SA or Vic Country kid. The alternative would be to trade down on draft night and I suspect that other clubs would smell blood in the water.

If Mattaes slips to the 10-15 range we could look at doing a deal on draft night and getting some change from our first pick next year. Whilst all things are possible, I doubt that we will have a top four pick next year. Our judgement will be, will a pick between 5 and 10 next year be better than Phillipou.

There are a lot of unknowns but we will have a much better idea where he will be selected come draft night.

I can see West Coast taking him at Pick 8

Interesting premise. Did we get a feeling that Essendon, West Coast or North would take him and therefore render our chance to get him as null considering we needed draft collateral to trade for Rankine?

If Phillipou went top 4 (excluding Ashcroft), then one of Wardlaw, Tsatsas, Cadman or Sheezel would be there at pick 5. Sheezel huge flight risk as has been previously stated, Cadman not the player for us with our shortcomings elsewhere, so one of Wardlaw or Tsatsas would have been there..were there red flags with them re flight risk?

I suppose we won't know and just need to roll with what we now have

The 'experts' claimed that WC were OK with dropping down to pick 8 from 2, because they wanted to avoid the go home factor of the Vic draftees and were keen on drafting the local WA talent, in particular Rueben Ginbey.

Also precisely the reason GWS worked their way up to Pick 1 to select Cadman, who is Vic Country. No reason why WC wouldn't have a crack at an SA kid who also has less of a go-home factor attached to them (despite recent events)

Recruiters know which clubs are really keen, would Essendon at pick 4 really pass up one of the best Vics? Pick 5, which go homer will GC take? It's just so interesting this year, maybe Phillipou does slide, maybe we can trade up to the required pick for our F1 and 23?

Pass on Phillipou and we miss our best opportunity, if he goes interstate there's every chance he doesn't come back or comes back to Port. Better to strike now and fast track our rebuild.

100% the Phillipou rumour is custard.

My 💰 bet is we will draft a smokey and hope for a raw diamond.

Most players in this draft are more a risk due to lack of footy and trajectory analysis over the past few years.

Attitudes can be changed with the right influences. I’d rather we recruited players with talent and back ourselves in to show them the way.

i get it - you like jam not vegemite on your toast

Everyone should embrace “inside Knowledge “ at least on face value
Sometimes on this board posters are burnt at the stake just for passing on knowledge that comes their way
Why would someone disclose their sources ?

Big Footy has lost way too many knowledgeable posters with inside info, over the years .....the tall poppy tendency is to pull those posters down, discredit their info .....happens every single time

You don't have to believe these posters, but take it on board ......just look at the Trading & Draft Board now, a desert .....there used to be so many posters with good track watching & contacts knowledge .....but everyone is now gone

P.S ....I'm not inc Knightmare in that group 🤣

All this trading up talk is fanciful.

Adelaide have never been successful at trading up meaningfully, especially in the first round.

The recruitment and list management team are not known to get these deals done.

The only time I can recall us trading up was getting Carlton's future first in 2019. We didn't even upgrade in that draft.

We traded up slightly for Brayden Cook, technically a first round pick. We also "traded up" to the 2011 mini-draft.

Don't think we've ever received a higher first round pick in the same draft unless the trade package also involved a player

Wasn't cook a pick in the mid 20's?

Didn't we traded down for Carlton future first? we seem to trade down all the time and thats not what I'm talking about.

Trading up in the same draft for a first rounder, like Port has done, is not something or negotiators are known for. Basically what we'd need to do to get the Poo. It's not happening because we just don't get these deals done.
