GWS either trades or takes Hayes. Barnett to West Coast, Cowan to Dogs.
Like this a lot.
I want Hustwaite with pick 27 but I am worried about Essendon before our pick as Essendon need a big bodied mid too.
We aren't linked despite my wishes of it. Could be Parker gate 2.0

Also just remembered you guys have a F/S that is very likely to be bid on very early on Day 2 of draft night which would wipe out your pick 25.

Looking at it

Pick 22 (GWS) - Could want a big bodied mid
Pick 23 (West Coast) - Again could want a big bodied mid
Pick 24 (Bulldogs) - Won't want a big bodied mid
Pick 25 (Essendon) - Could want a big bodied mid, but pick could be wiped out by F/S bid
Pick 26 (North) - I would be surprised if they pick a mid with this pick
Pick 27 (Sydney)

So to me there are only 2 clubs (GWS and West Coast) who are serious threats in taking Hustwaite before the Swans pick, of course that is assuming Sydney want Hustwaite as well.

Is the idea that we then trade back for your pick or?
In that scenario: Instead of just getting Davey, you wind up with Davey and a future pick.
Looking for win/win trades.

No deficit apparently but they traded out their first rounder? 😂

Oh we didn’t go into deficit but we have no picks left…
Of course we traded out our future first rounder. For Dunkley.

Are you a freaken muppet or what.

Lions out:
McStay
2022 first round pick.
2022 second round pick.
2022 fourth round pick.
2023 first round pick.

Lions in:
Dunkley
Gunston
McKenna
Ashcroft (pick 2)
Fletcher (pick 12)

Lions still have:
2022 third round pick (currently pick 50).
2023 second round pick.
2023 third round pick.
2023 fourth round pick (tied to Freo).

In what world have we not come out ahead during this trade and draft period.

We got two kids in the top 12 of this years draft, and it only cost us our pick 15 and pick 32.

We got Dunkley, and it only cost us McStay and our future first round pick.

We still added Gunston for late picks we were never likely to use, and McKenna for free.

An interesting trade-bid scenario - is there anything which forbids a team who bid on a player (e.g NGA) from trading picks with the team the bid relates to?

E.g. Bulldogs rate Davey, so bid on him with pick 24 - Bulldogs then trade pick 39, 68 & a future pick(s) for Essendon's pick 25?
I understand a nudge nudge handshake deal is probably worked out beforehand, but still it would be an interesting scenario and potentially a bad look for the AFL.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is clubs are forbidden from trading their picks out when a bid comes in, hence why GWS did not do so last night. The AFL changed the rules when Sydney did some devious magic to get Blakey for a couple picks in the 40s before trading back in.

I thought it could happen? The Blakey change happened because they traded both times with the same club.

The recently traded more future picks for late picks to match bids in this draft to avoid a 2023 draft deficit

We also traded Berry Jnr to Gold Coast as well with those traded outs, but all is sweet besides that :thumbsu:

GWS couldn't do it because they had multiple first round picks. Trading out 17 would've just meant that they're next first rounder would've been taken up. They would have had to trade out all of their 3 early picks just to match with later picks, inside of the 5 minute time limit

If the bid comes in we probably trade to St Kilda or Carlton.

We probably look at getting it elsewhere. You have Geelong's F2 and we'd probably prefer Carlton or St Kilda's. Even yours if Hawthorne give the best offer.

Never said you didn’t come out ahead did I, just pointing out you were dealt a great hand and did well out of it, it wasn’t some feat of list management brilliance you pulled out of your ass - good luck to ya

Of course, it’s a great trade period for you. Just Lions supporters are trying to make out like you’ve used ‘22 draft hand & McStay only for your haul. It’s basically two draft hands wiped, which don’t get me wrong is still a very very good return and any club would take that.

But it wasn’t some master stroke of recruiting/trading, you got dealt pocket Aces and made the most of it. Congrats
Two points.

No Lions fan is making out like it didn’t cost us our future first round pick.

Secondly, if you look at what picks and points we started the trade period with, and where we currently sit today, no Lions fan expected us to still have our future second and third round picks intact.

Most of us fully expected to be wiped out of two drafts.

The fact we have a future second round pick to use next year is a bonus.

We have an academy kid in next year’s draft, who’s somewhat decent. Billy Richardson, who is a KPD.

We have Levi Ashcroft in the 2024 draft, who made the U16 AA team this year. Plus two more academy KPP’s we have hopes for.

We had 4 academy kids named in this years U15 AA team, including the kid who was named player of the tournament, as a 14 year old (so is 2026 draft).

We’re probably spending the next few drafts matching bids on academy kids and father son kids, as well as trading picks for ready made players.

Depends what you’d prefer - would you rather an extra pick in next years draft and just Tsatas and Davey this year or would you rather Pick 24 and Davey this year. How many list spots are you expecting to use etc?

If you’d prefer the extra pick this year we could swap you 24 for 25 to get in before our bid.

Getting the points to match, on top of adding Dunkley, and not going in to deficit was a feat of list management brilliance.

Had you taken our first offer for Dunkley, we’d probably would be sitting here today with 3 future fourth round picks as our draft hand for next year.

I think we probably don't trade up. Keep our powder dry for next year. If you bid we just take next year's pick and retake Josh Eyre with our last pick.

Yeah Bris has had an amazing off season so far. This is as good as it gets.

Fair. I imagine most clubs are giving the phones a good workout right about now with half the recruiting teams wandering the halls at Marvel

Our deal has probably already been worked out and it's just a matter of whether or not anyone bids before our pick.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure if you trade out your future 1st, you can’t trade out other future picks.

Although an element of luck is involved (2 first round FS in one draft), Brisbane have done extremely well not to go into deficit, which would affect those future picks. That’s the key part, particularly given future FS/NGA talents coming through.

Probably with winners of the draft/trade period. I can’t see any club coming close to claiming that tittle this year.

Sydney have won the draft. Geelong did pretty well too
