World Cup 2022 FIFA World Cup - Group D - (France, Australia, Denmark, Tunisia)

It was a standard Arnold game. Bereft of ideas, defensively dull gameplan.
* the media brotherhood that appoint their mates. Robbie Slater, is one. Craig Foster was so vocal in sacking Ange. Still fuming Australia ran him out of the country.
Foster was a supporter of Ange when he was Socceroos coach. They had a infamous bust up on the World Game in the mid 2000s where Foster said he should resign but that was when Ange was coach of the junior Australia teams.

Our players were all 2 steps slower than theirs. It seemed like all France had to do was just do a little jig and they had two or three meters of open space to use.

We have truly declined. Why is our youth so s**t?
That’s a long story but we’ve priced kids out of the game. Charging thousands to join NPL academies etc

What I'd love to know is why we haven't picked the younger players that were available?

Surely even a drunk mug knows we aren't doing anything this WC, so why not use it to give experience to some young players, instead we find every excuse to go back to to older ones, who aren't even that good in the first place.

There was a couple of 18 year olds that we could have picked and didn't.

Who are you on about?

Souttar, Mabil, Kuol, Atkinson (LOL), McGree, Rowles are all the 'young next generation' (and some of those aren't even that young anymore) and all got game time this morning. Should we have played an u23 side and gotten pumped 12-0?

It's not the scoreline or the result. It's just the complete lack of inclination to go forward when we get the possession and try to play football. It was embarrassing. What's the fricken point of qualifying for the World Cup if they're not even going to have a crack? Some of our defending was also pretty shite, but I'm less critical about that given that it was France and we were under the pump.

The handful of times we dared to attack, we looked okay. So why hold back? Why so conservative? We got blown away anyway by playing scared, letting them have their way with us and inviting them to attack. Just have a fricken go. What's the worst thing that can happen? Lose possession and concede a goal? Newsflash: that's what happened anyway.
I feel because we play in the AFC and are considered one of the big dogs, there’s pressure on us to play football and keep possession so we recycle as much as possible thinking it makes us prime Barcelona instead of taking risks going forward because then we give the ball back to France and the less they have of it, the less they can punish us

Wasn't there that one in Italy that we could have picked that didn't (the one that was choosing between countries was either spain or italy forget which one). It's sure no different than getting pumped like today. Give the kids a go, and start the young ones next game, these ones won't do anything. Mind you we did more than I expected this WC we actually scored a goal. More than likely be the last one we score.

He flat out said no to us.

We tried to pick him and he turned it down ffs. How can you have such a strong opinion about something you clearly have a passing interest in at best?

It's excellent viewing that argo hahahaha

There absolutely is a difference, it would shatter those players if they got destroyed on the pitch. Having senior players as the spine of the side to support them actually gave them a positive experience. For all the naysayers in the build up to the game, we scored first and suddenly everyone was up and about. Then when we predictably went on to lose, everyone's pivoted to outrage that we didn't perform better. Then even in your post you say 'probably the last one we'll score'.

I just don't understand what 90% of people who jump on the Socceroos bandwagon for the WC actually expect? It's like they expect us to do poorly, then when we score they get excited for 5 seconds, then go back to criticising the side. Do people just enjoy sticking the boot in?

We were playing the reigning world champions who are an established European powerhouse. What did people expect from this game?

He flat out said no to us.

To be fair he said no for now, not no forever. Makes no sense for him to tie himself to Aus at his age when he has a slim prospect of developing into an Italian international. If that doesn't look likely I have no doubt he'd be happy to play for us at the next WC if that was his only chance.

What did people expect from this game?

Not conceding 4 would be a start, especially if you are parking the bus for 90 minutes. 2-1 loss is okay that's sort of expected, 3 is passable.

You expected us to concede less than 4 or you're saying that's what you demand in hindsight?

Most people going into the game were saying we were going to get smacked, now all of a sudden because we scored early we should have held on?

Go back to the MAFS thread and comment on the looks of women mate.

You're out of your depth here.

Thought 2-3 would be where it was at and a realistic aim. Thought we'd lose 2-0 so it's a lot worse conceding 4. It's not that we conceded 4 it was how lazy and soft the last one was especially.

You don't want us to concede more than 2, but also want us to play an entirely junior side that would get smacked by a huge margin. Which is it?

Atkinson made a mistake on the second goal but otherwise he did was well as you’d expect anyone to do on an island against Mbappe

It wasn't just the second goal, it was how much space he gave Mbappe. Their third goal also came down his side as they just targeted him over and over.

He was terrible. Too much space, poor positioning. Lacked awareness etc.

Though, not many players can mark Mbappe well. Him being lightning quick makes it even more difficult, but yeah, Atkinson well out of his depth.

I saw a suggestion we play Deng as he at least has the pace and awareness, felt like that might have been the better option.
