I still think O'Connor was a bit stiff not to get another year even if it was the rookie list, was showing good signs in the SANFL and had limited T.O.G. in the 2 AFL games he played, the other as an used sub. Really started to find his feet in the WAFL this year where he's started finding plenty of the footy.

So what are the odds he finds a spot on a list this year?

Is it fair to suggest Jones has struggled, pace wise, to carry the extra muscle ? .....that said, there was one passage of play late season, where he put the after-burners on and showed there is latent pace
Jones lacks any real lateral movement, which is why he always seems rushed. In a straight line he's fine.

We've had a lot of those straight line guys over the years. That's where 360 degree players like Rachele and hopefully Cook and Rankine are so valuable.

Here's what I want - just because I had an hour to spare and thought I might throw myself to the wolves.

Trade in
Izak Rankine for 2023 AFC First Round Pick - that's all they can have
Jason Horne Francis for 2022 Pick 5 + Matt Crouch with something coming back - perhaps a future third
Brennan Cox + third round 2023 for 2022 Pick 2 (Pick 23) + Shane McAdam

Draft in
Keeler - pick 33 + 36 = something in the early 20s (see below)
Michalanney - F/S
Heard - Rookie selection

Upgrade to main list
Butts
Strachan

Trade out
Ned McHenry - Late Round 2 to Mid Round 3 pick - 2022 (33?)
Fisher Macasey - Late Round 2 to Mid Round 3 pick - 2022 (36?)
Lachlan Sholl - Mid to late Round three pick - 2022
Billie Frampton - Early to mid Round 4 pick - 2022
James Rowe - Mid to late Round 4 pick - 2022

Delist
Ben Davis

Gives us something in the early twenties for Keeler and the rest totalled for a F/S bid on Michalanney (might have to go in to deficit)
Keep all of our picks for 2023 except Round 1 + 2 future thirds

Round one

Rankine Walker Thilthorpe
Gollant Fogarty Rachelle
Dawson Horne-Francis Soligo
O'Brien Laird Berry
Hamill Cox Smith (or Hinge)
Worrell Butts Doedee

Keays Pedlar Cook Murray

E: Sloane Parnell Schoenberg Taylor Hinge Jones

That's the problem with pre draft profiles, about 30 kids are written up as guns. We unfortunately seem to pick the ones who aren't guns.

Port, Brisbane and Swans thank us for saving them from wasting a first rounder. After we took Gooch, within a few picks Port took SPP, Brisbane Jarrod Berry and Swans Will Hayward

This years top 30 sound really good as well! But we may not have to worry about that
You know its 2022, not 2016?

Watching tonight and it just confirms Cox is exactly what our backline needs. Would have to pay a first rounder for him, so can’t see how it happens. Can dream.

It can happen. I think we could get Rankine, Hopper, Cox. Trade out pick 5 for pick 10 and 16. 10 goes to GC for Rankine. Pick 16 goes to Freo for Cox. Use our 2023 1st (probably pick 8-10) on Hopper. Either use pick 23 in the 2022 draft or trade it out for a similar pick in the 2023 draft. This would allow us to use the two 2nds to trade back into the 2023 first round.

I'm not that keen on hopper would prefer a speedier x factor mid with good kick rather than a bull

Paddy Dow with a tidy 41 disposals 7 tackles and a goal. in week 2 of the VFL finals, tidy effort for a player with poor endurance?

Jarryd Lyons with 16 disposals in the same game.

Lyons hasn't been having a strong season from the games I've seen of his/Brisbane's this year. Feel he's been transitioned out of the midfield a bit.

Dow has done this B4 .....I've seen him rip up an AFL game and dominate a half of footy .....and then disappear

Much easier to run out a VFL game, which is below SANFL standard ...than it is an AFL game, with associated pressure

He's certainly got some talent, and another AFL club would pick him up ....the CROWS though, already have enough of his player type

The talent is there with Dow and we need a player of his type imo . He hasn’t handled the pressure of expectation well at Carlton and needs a move , I would like to look at Poulter in that role but I’m not anti PD at no cost.

IMO ....Nankervis is a better option than Poulter .....Nank just has something about the way he moves & his decision making that oozes potential

I saw him in the match versus Melbourne where the Lions got smashed and I definitely felt he's in Matt Crouch territory where the game has now passed him by...was not at all surprised to see him listed as an out for the final with 'groin soreness' and I think the fact he played two days later (presumably to keep his match fitness up as a break glass in case of emergency option) tells you all you need to know about his spot in the pecking order.

Lyons had a superb 2021 ....3rd in BRIS best & Fairest ....but strangely, has been impacted by Neale's return from injury ???

However, this year, BRIS have run Bailey and Rayner thru the midfield for longer periods

I feel Tambling2 and would leave him be.
Dow is a dud. We already have our very own Paddy Dow in Hately. Performs in the sanfl and is awful at AFL level. The only players we need to be bringing in from our list or via a trade is replacements for players such as Rowe, McHenry, Murphy, ROB, Jones, Keays, Smith plus a big bodied explosive mid, another KPD and a better ruck.

VFL is not below SANFL, way more AFL listed playersand formerly listed players running around in the VFL than the SANFL.

Yes I know focus this draft / trade should only be on
rankine (next year first), pick 5 mid, keeler, michalanney

none of the other mentioned players even interested in coming here: JHF, cox etc so no need to keep capital for them

in recent times I think vfl has moved significantly ahead of sanfl. oh sacrilege!
You only need to look at the SANFL reserves these days full of kids that have been passed over in the last couple of drafts and apart from a few SANFL journeymen that are break glass in emergency League players it's pretty bereft of talent. Almost all the good mature age players not getting regular League games prefer to play in the Country or Ammos with mates. One only needs to look at some of our top ups this year, most are clearly right up to SANFL League standard at least, players like Boyle, McKenzie etc would walk into most Snaffle League teams if they were still that way inclined.
