Actually the AFL have 11 matches more @ 207 than the NRL including SOO on 196!

It's actually only 3 games different when you add in state of origin by my calculations.

NRL 192 + 3 games = 292.5 hours of content
AFL 198 games = 495 hours of content

So the games played are basically the same but the hours of content is very different. Also the hours of content makes the AFL ratings look lower than reality imo, as ratings are done off average viewers, it also inflates the NRL ratings due to the shorter length of games.

Put it this way, if you had two sets of 100 people and allowed one group 1.5 hours to get lunch from a cafe, compared to another group of 100 people that were allowed 2.5 hours to get lunch from another cafe and you counted how many people on average were in each store during open times, the 1.5 hour stores average customers would be much higher. I hope that makes sense.

Even for me, if it's a neutral game of AFL I'll watch the first quarter, turn on something else to keep the mrs happy for an hour or so, then flick back picking the game back up in the third quarter or so to watch the back end.

Tv would understand this, that's why the large discrepancy in the money they are willing to pay for AFL, well that's one reason.

And blabber mouth V'Landys knows that his basically second rate suburban Sydney comp won't get anywhere that an mount esp now the AFL consistently kills the RL in TV ratings like last night where the RL got just 48,000 across three states WA,SA and SA and the AFL still got 118,000 across Sydney and Brisbane!

The combined total ratings for the 2022 NRL year will see an estimated 137.452m viewers across NRL, NRLW, Preseason, Origin and Rep fixtures. This does not count the estimated 5.5m that watched week 1 of the finals.

Opinion

These are great figures for the NRL, and on the raw numbers its real hard to see why 25 million more viewers doesnt deliver better results at the broadcasting negotiations. 206m viewing hours up against the AFLs 287m viewing hours could play a part.

Data

All data sourced from Oztam – using Total TV, VOZ and consolidated +7 subscription tv data.. Kayo data estimated on trends (see note below). Thanks to @TV_Blackbox, @kevinperry, @MrTVAus, @LeagueUnlimited and others for assistance over the season.

Notes on Kayo estimates

Kayo is estimated on reported early season data trends that put the ratio of Streaming to STB about 0.89. This figure has not been updated since Round 10. As soon as any updated data is available, I will update. Apologies for anyone inconvenienced.

You'd have to think it has everything to do with it.
The ratio of 206:287 is almost identical to the ratio for the respective deals from 2025.
That's before we get to the greater capacity to run ads, and the fact that Perth and Adelaide still have poor Foxtel penetration (relatively speaking).

And the AFL is a truly National comp and that is what national brands like Bunnings,Coles,Chemist and Toyota want on the other hand the RL is not a national comp and rates very poorly in Vic.WA,SA and Tassie, etc.

That is one of the main reasons among others that the AFL will always get more than RL for their media rights and motor mouth V'Landys squealing about it won't change the FACTS!.

Oh Dear, Only 25.000 at the Soccer last night at Suncorp Stadium (cap 52,500) in Brisbane for the Socceroos national team against NZ!

Maybe soccer in Australia is not as popular as the soccer urgers believe?

I had it on in the background, it looked like a decent crowd, but maybe I missed shots of the upper decks.

Kidding, right?
This article is mainly about the Swans, given the day, but it's a very in-depth analysis of the situation for AFL vs other codes in Sydney. Good read.

MCC opening up to restricted members with "a limited number of tickets at 11am" at 175 bucks a piece.

If you are a restricted, go onto this website now and get ready to buy at 11: https://hotshow4.ticketek.com.au/shows/show.aspx?sh=AFLF22

I'm restricted but hosting a party at home so won't be heading in.

But very happy they are doing this. Two essentially non-Melbourne teams. Want to make sure the MCG hits 100k.

Socceroos got 209k the other night, shown on the !0's main channel nationally, failed to make top 20. Pretty poor for a mid week sports broadcast.
It ensured Ten was a distant third on the night amongst the channels, although it did squeeze past the ABC.

I often hear from certain quarters in the media that the NRL has gone about its womens comp in a much better way than the AFL, by keeping it relatively small, doing double headers with the men, etc.
Well, just learned that Parramatta won one solitary game during the home and away season, and yet are playing off in the grand final.
Yep.

They claim its doing better because it has good crowds.

But double headers.

They aren't game to make it a stand alone comp.

Its seems difficult to find nrlw crowd figures. Do you have a link?
No. I do not believe there are any, and in terms of meaningful figures, cannot be.
As far as I am aware, in double headers, they do not empty the ground out between games. So, as crowds aren't counted by the time of arrival, the crowd for the women's game is given as the same for the men's game.

Given the number of games that are double headers, the actual number of people going to a ground to watch a womens NRL game is impossible to determine.
