McGowan Government to support potential third-party bid for a WA-based NRL team.

The NRL will expand to 17 teams in 2023, with the expectation the competition will further grow to 18 teams in the following years.

Preliminary work has already begun with VenuesWest appointing consultants Freshwater Strategy to ascertain interest from potential third parties and determine the most appropriate bid structure.

A local NRL team would also provide an opportunity to further grow participation in community rugby league which - with 4,100 registered players - is the game's third biggest jurisdiction behind the traditional strongholds of NSW and Queensland.

While an 18th team would provide the NRL with an additional weekly fixture, a WA-based team has an added benefit of an additional TV timeslot given our time zone.

They’ve been talking about this for a long time. Maybe it’s finally going to happen.

until the governing bodies dont want to schedule games at the later slot as its too late over east for a 9/10pm start

I actually think the oppposite, from 2007-2016 Channel 9 would have a double-header on Friday nights with the second game being on delay shown at 9.30.

Likewise in the first few rounds of daylight savings, Fox would schedule Saturday games in QLD to start at 8.30pm local, which would be 9.30pm DST.

Fox and Channel 9 would love a later time-slot, NRL being a 2 hour game makes it easier to fit 2 games into a 7.30-11.30 window.

The ICC T20 World Cup Super 12 stage has seen 316,558 people attend at an average of 26,380 per match (44% of capacity). Note: Weekend crowds from the Gabba TBA. In total, the ICC T20 World Cup has been attended by 349,839 at an average of 19,436 (41% of capacity).

Queensland started last year and already got their return - this partnership was part of the deal for the Grand Final in Queensland. The Tasmanian deal hasnt even been started.

I'm not Victorian, so not overly fussed one way or the other on Vic government sponsoring the Diamonds.
A quirky aspect about the deal is that it's a state government sponsoring a national team, but then again, it's the tourism body that is promoting Victoria, so really, why not?
I guess Melbourne will get preferential treatment for all Diamond international games, so that might be worth something.

Lol, no way are there 4100 rugby league players in WA. That's 200 or so teams, there wouldn't even be half that.

Btw the NRL really took it up the arse for the women's world cup. How did V'landys let that happen? Even training grounds are out of action for months!

I guess the main point is that it would probably make more sense for the commonwealth tourism body to be sponsoring a national team than a state-based body, but otherwise, good luck to both Victoria and the Diamonds, I hope they both do well out of it.

I think Victorian Racing has a challenge before them. Over successive years I believe racing in this state has become complacent. We’ve seen Tennis innovate with improved fan experiences year on year, the NBL is riding a wave driven by a NBA quality wash over, new teams and this whilst the AFL (AFLW) chip away at this period in the calendar. Racing is now being challenged directly by V’landys in NSW who will take more attention to NSW. He’s no mug. Yet racing in Victoria seems to not be innovating and appears to be losing its zing with the younger folk who didn’t gravitate on mass to the Carnival this year like it did 5-10 years ago…..

Rain impacted crowd, yes but it still would’ve struggled to get 90,000 along, a far cry from the good old days. Derby Day crowd poor too. And most events have returned with a bang post covid so we can’t blame covid for the poor turnout and overall malaise.

Will Victoria Racing take stock? Or will it simply meander along as if it believes it’s current product is and will always just continue to resonate? Just as Cricket has done and is now paying the price via poor crowds and pressure on its TV rights future. Time will tell.

Reasoned logic would suggest that people deprived of their liberty would rush out to re-acquire their usual experiences in even greater numbers than normal but human conditioning suggests that people adjust to the new "norm" of less external experiences.
Maybe we can use the drug analogy - when we have freedom we want more and better, hence ever higher record attendances over time but when we have just gained freedom - a little of the past usual experiences goes a long way.
Over time I expect things to return to normal and better. It's just going to take longer than simple logic suggests.
In the mean time football, sport, entertainment, cuisine has lost a lot of momentum for various reason.

Gold Coast 500 had record attendance over 3 days, 67k per day

While there was the 3 year gap factor, it'd interesting to see the effect of drive to survive on non-F1 motorsport. Some Indycar races have had record crowds this year as well. I know it got my sister to at least acknowledge their existence.

I think there’s more in it than that. The TV numbers for the Cup support a continual decline YOY the last decade. Per the crowds. I think the Cup Carnival in Victoria was THE place to be, and be seen for about a decade between 2000-2010. However the last decade it’s status has ebbed away. 15 years ago, those that went to the Carnival would likely attend 2-3 of the 4 big days. Crowds at each day were between 80-130,000. Then, crowds fell away as punters opted to go to 1-2 of the 4 days. Either way, ‘you’ went to a couple of days of the Carnival. It was in-vogue, had big name star ambassadors and visitors, more international horses and gregarious international jockeys, huge corporate support and intrigue.

Nowadays it’s morphed back into that iconic day it always was without that compulsory feel about attending it. There’s now more options and frankly, more sports and activities marketing themselves better.

Sports go through cycles. NBL, Australian Open Tennis, AFL, AFLW, horse racing (NSW) and even Motorsport are riding the wave and advancing. Cricket (T20), Soccer and horse racing appear to be lacking that innovative spark and shining relevance and consequently need to revisit their strategies to ensure they recapture their share in an increasingly competitive and noisy market.
