The NRL thrives on controversy. Probably the only code that does.

Yes, winning is boring.
AFL thrives on soap opera dramas and controversies. Have you lost your hearing, or just don't watch TV or listen to the radio?

What are you saying ?
Are you saying AFL is thriving because there are lots of soap opera dramas and controversies ?
According to many posts on BigFooty the AFL is having a lacklustre season.
Its not about thriving, its about how participants react. Too many things are turned into dramas and controversies, because the 5,000 mouths the industry has to feed outside of club land needs controversies.

Absolute PR disaster for the NRL.

While the AFL has been displaying pride jumpers for some years, the NRL clubs have seemingly shown reluctance to follow suit. This news shows why. The NRL have a significant portion of their playing group from religious backgrounds and I strongly suspect this is the reason NRL clubs have not wanted to show open support to the LGBT community.

With about 40% of the playing group being Pacific Islander, who often belong to evangelical church groups, this is likely to be a tough area for the NRL to navigate.

I’m of the opinion that all religions should be given 21 days to provide irrefutable proof of the existence of their particular deity, or else forfeit the right to any public utterance on any topic, so I should probably sit this one out….

Sounds more than fair to me.

Didn't the Giants have an AFLW player that boycotted a game for the same reason?

I believe in religious freedom - the freedom from any religious influences.
I did believe that until I realised that AFL is indeed a religion itself.

So it's NOT that the "AFL thrives on soap opera dramas and controversies."
Mate what are you talking about?? The AFL is the AFL. It survives on plenty of bullshit, just like all sports around the world do.

I wouldn't wear a pride jumper and I'm sure a lot of other people wouldn't if they was honest

What are YOU talking about /

So it's NOT that the "AFL thrives on soap opera dramas and controversies",
but rather the media industry surrounding the AFL competition - completely different.
The AFL and NRL both "thrive" on the same thing - the public being interested in them - good or bad. That's why media groups pay big $$$.

To say AFL thrives because of its product and NRL thrives because of its controversies is just BS. They thrive on their whole package of on field and the off field BS. Just as much as Euro soccer does, or NFL does, or NBA or NHL or all other sports that sign big media deals.

You responded with

In the NRL a very controversial finish to a game up there over the final seconds of time left.

The NRL thrives on controversy. Probably the only code that does.

How is a bad call by an NRL official any different to the "thriving" by the AFL industry by an official's bad call on Ginnivan?? It isn't. Its the same BS.

No there is such a thing as bad publicity and the AFL tries to avoid bad publicity.
The NRL does the same but with less energy.

That's why media groups pay big $$$.

To say AFL thrives because of its product and NRL thrives because of its controversies is just

matter of fact.

They thrive on their whole package of on field and the off field BS.

They is the media - not the AFL.

No, those leagues are quite concerned about the image they represent.

How is a bad call by an NRL official any different to the "thriving" by the AFL industry

I don't see the AFL "thriving" over umpiring controversies or any other controversies.
Just the opposite - people seem to be voting with their feet.

The Israel Folau controversy almost single-handedly sunk ARU.

Your original post was nonsensical, and this one isn't much better.

Had a scan of the West Australian this morning, and the NRL was on the inside back page thanks to Manly. The NRL never gets this much coverage over here.

I'm not sure this is the PR disaster many think it is. The anti-woke crowd is a lot bigger than the woke crowd.
doesn't mean they will watch it still. likewise, having a pride jumper. Overall, this whole mess means nothing. What people say and what people do are 2 very different things. But maybe I am showing my lack of interest in the whole debate.

I think it was an own goal caused by bad communication regardless.

Yeah it's not something I particularly give a shit about either, but my point wasn't so much that people are more likely to start watching, just that it's not going to harm the NRL. Calling it a "PR disaster" implies people will switch off in their droves.

Most of the time things like this piss off people that wouldn't watch sport if they were paid to.

& this talk of diversity, what does it include?

This is not the place ....

& this talk of diversity, what does it include?

I find it rather confusing that the NRL are asking people to respect players wishes who don't respect diversity
at the same time asking people to respect players not respected by some other players.
A conflict of interest of hypocrisy ?

I'm just amazed that BBT has picked up on this and used it AFL overtaking NRL in the N.E. states.
