Revenue shortfall from the lacklustre ratings for the A-League broadcasts was part of the desperation that led APL to do the grand final deal that no-one thinks is a good thing.
Many Oz soccer fans prefer to believe there’s a giant media-wide conspiracy to suppress their sport in Australia, but Blind Freddie can see that a game that sometimes offers zero ad breaks in 90 mins due to no goals being scored, just isn’t a very attractive advertising proposition compared to Aussie Rules or cricket or even rugby league.

I mean, the biggest match in Aussie soccer for the last 7 years and the HS/AFL just happen to release the 1st round of the AFL season right when the match was being played. The fact that the APL is at war and fighting a PR campaign to save their skins means anything they say should be taken with a pinch of salt. They cant keep their story straight atm. new tradition was the first one they tried.
And what does the amount of goals scored mean anything regarding ad breaks in soccer!!!!!!! The fact there can be no goals scored is not the reason for any ad breaks in soccer. It is a different style of play. As Ange said, we stop at half time and we stop at the end of the match. But during the game, we dont stop. So no set breaks for ads. Has nothing to do with goals. This wouldnt matter if the a-league could get decent ratings in the first place.
If you going to have a go for soccer for not having any goals, at least try to make it reasonable, or make sense.

The sort of schittes ‘n giggles the leviathan of Australian sport pulls because it can! I thought it was hilarious.
Help me out here - I’ve watched a few A-League games, but I can’t recall - do they have ad breaks in general play (and therefore risk not covering a goal), or just after goals and at half time?

Two more shocking crowds at the BBL in Melbourne and Sydney yesterday.
I wonder if the salad days of big crowds are well and truly over for the current BBL and they may never return unless CA can some how get a lot of star players from OS playing.

Regardless, in Australia we speak Australian English and you’d be hard pressed to find a single Australian fan, player, coach or administrator in union or league that calls rugby league “rugby”.Yep, it's just "bad journalism" from the heritage society of the most successful RL club in England and the world...

In Australia, among everyone who plays, coaches, follows or administers either code:
Rugby Union, or union, or rugby.
Rugby League, or league, even NRL. But never rugby.
Something I find very annoying but of course the AFL admin are promoting their own business in a way, making them seem the all powerful.
I also find it staggering that they've let soccer call themselves 'Australian football', basically stealing the identity of the national game. I used the example elsewhere of if soccer in the U.S started calling themselves 'American football' all hell would break loose.
I was the Stars game last night with some experienced MCG attendees. Our crowd estimates were all in the 5k - 8k range. Thinking about today that was probably optimistic. BBL has jumped the shark, there won’t be a recovery. More gimmicks just makes it sink further. It shows how fragile sports crowds are. Soccer, Cricket and Union are in a world of pain. Ratings are following crowds downwards. Credit to the AFL and NRL for holding on.
Not convinced that has anything to do with the GP.

In my experience Union is often referred to as Rugby.
The AFL should own footy for our code.
7s lower bid to CA includes a deal on their current legal action.
They might want to work on getting the star players from Australia playing first.
& footy fans should never let the AFL to deny the mindlessness of their actions.
