Now let me think if i was a Australian professional sportsman and i had the chance to visit most of Australia or most of Europe playing my profession i wonder which one i would choose?

I'd choose playing and living in Australia close to friends, family etc and being famous in your own community, over living on the other side of the world every year away from home.

Then if I were playing in an Australian league I'd travel overseas for a month or two at the end of every season and enjoy the anonymity. I think it's the perfect balance.

Unless of course you are going to be a big name in the U.S or Europe, then I can see the appeal in cashing in, in your 20s.

Strange that you wouldn't want to play your chosen sport overseas and get paid for it and take in others countries cultures. Plenty of time to visit places in Australia when you have finished playing professionally overseas.

Nobody was on about being there permanently just playing your sport professionally overseas for 5 or 6 years and taking in the culture and then coming back and visiting places you haven't visited in Australia

Its more about realising your sporting ability at the highest level not seeing the world.
If thats locally as it is in AFL footy, or by winning the Indy 500 at Indianapolis, or The Masters at Augusta.

Winning at Indy outranks winning at Bathurst, the Australian Masters is outranked by Augusta.

The Australian football monicker is an own goal by the AFL who should have protected it for our game.
IMHO they should make 'footy' their own brand & stop referring to Australian Football.

By all means continue to need to compare the A-League with the AFL as you will in the knowledge that there is no direct comparison.

Trying to make 'AFL" the game has not helped our game one iota.

I'm with you 100% and have been hearing the crap that soccer was going to take over Australia and kill off real Australian Football since the first European migrants started coming here in large numbers from the 1950s on and you know what - it ain't happened yet and in fact Australian Football is stronger than ever and all the lies and wishful thinking the soccer urgers hoping soccer will rival Australian Football still will have no effect!

I think it's completely relevant when using a thread to spout untruths about the biggest sport in the country, that the actual biggest sport in the country, Australian football, gets brought into the conversation, particularly on an AFL forum.

Using it as a comparison shows that soccer 'in Australia' is still a fair way off the pace in claiming the title of the biggest sport in the country. Maybe you are upset about the facts, but i think it's a relevant conversation to compare other sports to the yard stick and not buy into non factual commentary post the world cup hype.

Interesting story about Brooke Lochland. From age 16 to 23, she lived her childhood dream of being a professional speed skater, living in Holland, competing in the depths of their Winter. What an experience for her.

When she returned to Australia, she decided to pursue another childhood game she excelled at, and eventually joined the dogs in their inaugural AFLW season, winning the premiership the following year.

But what a come down it has been for her, going from the joys of a Dutch Winter, to having to bear the uncomfortable travails of an Australian summer as a professional footballer. But being forced to have to earn a living in Australia - how tough would that have to be?

And imagine being stuck in a city that has been voted "most liveable city" in the world on a dozen occasions, then moving to another Australian city that is regularly in the top 10. It's tough.
