So this year's top four teams feature a handful of journeymen rucks who'd probably be costing their clubs $300kpa on average. They just compete as well as they can but aren't seen as match-winners.

Meanwhile we're planning on spending about $1.5m on two rucks who don't solve our forward problem and are both in the twilight of their careers.

FMD.

Yeah and the funny thing is Max's tapwork has gone downhill and we often lose clearances. But crazy Goody loves to double down.

The only counter I have to that is David King said we were stupid for spending picks and salary on key defenders

That's all I got. I was sorta into the Grundy idea but now I'm thinking it's dumb again.

Look at Freo, they play slow boring footy exactly like us, struggle to mark inside 50 and struggle to score against the best. They also have a gun ruck who can't go forward well, it's not like they're gonna be stupid enough to go and spend 900k on another ruck 😂

We need to get some value trades in. If we don’t bang the table we may be knocked off our perch. We should demand that DeGoey, Franklin, Gunston and Gardiner all sign as free agents for no more than $500k combined, or else. Majak Daw, Luke Brown, Robbie Gray and the Josh Kennedys should be convinced to go one more year for a potential semifinal or better side. We can also sign up Jake Spencer, Corey Ellison, George Grey, Jimmy Munro and Mitch White from Casey to bolster our depth promise. Train Weed as a crumbing ruck. A part from Luke Brown we need more crumbing defenders… I think Brandon Starcevich has potential as he struggles to get a game for Brisbane ahead of Answerth and Wilmot. Not too many people would have heard of Josh Daicos’ brother but I see a bit of a diamond in the pond there we should consider trading a token pick for young Nick. I’m also not sure why we’re just letting Connor McGregor walk to Geelong as I think it’s a cross code switch that could really work. It would hurt to see them go but I would also consider trading our South Australian talent in ANB, Sparrow and Petty to Adelaide for Izak Rankine and Jason Horne-Francis. With these moves it should ensure that our apple doesn’t fall too far from the ocean.

Genuinely baffled why Melbourne are chasing Grundy. Only really works if Gawn goes down.

To be perfectly honest Lloyd Meek is 24 and has some decent performances on the board. He’s certainly no worse than Tom Hickey at the same age, who has clearly been the best ruckman in this finals series.

You can certainly make argument to take him as the steak knife in Jackson deal if it means saving $700k a year on Grundy.

I agree. If we are set on 2 rucks then Meek is a good option. He is half decent and young and won't cost the earth. Best thing is, he would be the perfect steak knives in a trade for Jackson. He might even get better under Gawns tutelage.

Then use the money we have saved on Grundy to get a free agent like Gunston, or just to pay up and comers like Kozzie.

Hard no for Grundy.

I can half see why we (as in our coaching group) would be going after Grundy. It served us so well in 2021 and made us a real point of difference. There was no let up for the opposition in the ruck/onball and made for awkward match ups in our f50. Sure, 2022 top 4 teams have B/C grade journeyman ruckmen, but I can see how we are thinking that it has worked once for us and could work again.

The problem in 2022 was that after the halfway point of the year, both Gawn and Jacko hit terribly ordinary form - Jacko in particular. Neither were rucking well, nor kicking goals when resting forward. And it's not like they weren't getting looks (yes delivery was rubbish but it was still in there enough). Also, is it just me or are Jacko's hands actually bang average? Even when he did grab them, they were double grabs. He'd almost be better off playing as a tall winger or midfielder a la that Geelong steeplechaser bloke. There's a touch of the NicNats about him in that people marvel at his athletic prowess yet you then realise he's taken no marks for 3 weeks and had 6 kicks in that time.

Anyway my point is, the system worked...until it didn't. I'd not go after Grundy as others have suggested, especially not for that price and age. I don't want to see Max in the forward line any more than 20% of the game. But we now have a big hole in the key forward role, and there's seemingly noone available to fill it. The Tiges were shock losers in 2018. What did they do? Went and got Tom Lynch. Sure, timing was ideal for them. We really need to go all in on a Harry McKay or even a Ben King. I know they're contracted, but get in their ears, hope to compete again in 2023 to look desirable, then get them at the end of 2023. I dunno.

One last point: Weid. By now he should've been kicking 35-40 goals a year. Final piece of the puzzle. But it just hasn't clicked at all and it's hurting us given how much we invested in him.

Literally less than a 0 chance McKay moves to us. There's no reality in existence where a high profile Carlton player leaves for Melbourne. Best we can hope for is someone wants to leave an interstate side or that someone shows up in the draft

i want new coaches more than new forwards tbh. Richmond choked hard but were big improvers this year, they’ve signed two ex senior coaches in the last two years. Sydney took Donny “eyeballs and torture camp” Pyke and they’re in a granny.
Mad Dog Yze wants to get a senior gig somewhere fine, **** him and his pissweak corona drinking arse out of here so he can find one and get me some new fresh ball movement and ideas man, someone who can stand up to simon GOATwin and say “you’re the best simon but let’s get harmes tagging now, let’s sub Salem out and win the game” etc.

also contrafted players request trades all the time idgaf who they are we should be asking everyone in the afl enen that ex-carlton spud who ended up at gc, literally everyone.

its beyond puzzling. The club should be held accountable for this.

What if we get in his ear and look him straight in the eye with a guarantee that he’ll be playing for a side that lasted 3 weeks longer than his current club in 2022?

🤞for Noble and Neeld as 2023 ball movement/player morale coaches.

hey everyone, do people think we will give a late first rounder for grundy? I'm not saying whether we should or not but instead, whether we will or not.

I don’t think so, unless we get something back.

Will be doing the members a disservice otherwise, it’s clear as day we have the upper hand in any talks. Similar to when we paid 28 for Ben Brown.

Eg: freo pick 13 + 34 for Grundy and Collingwood Pick 16

yeah. I reckon 34 alone may even cut it if we are strong enough. Collingwood are desperate to get him off the books.

I don't see Meek be willing to be traded here unless he got some assurances that he is best-22.
