This is the year where I'd be willing to trade our high pick for an established high quality player that fiils a direct need.

Imo we have enough top end talent on the list via the draft now.

Do we REALLY need another top 5 pick mid?

So many variables at play to answer this right now. It's dependent on where we finish in 2022, how our mids progress in 2022, what established high quality players are actually available/want to come across, what the 2022 top 5 actually looks like.

If you asked me now, the West Adelaide 199cm Key Forward prospect Harry Lemmey looks mouth watering considering our current mix.

I also don't subscribe to the fact that we can ever have enough gun mids - If we were to finish bottom 1 or 2 again, we obviously haven't progressed as many had hoped/expected, therefor I don't see us trading away the rights of Wardlaw or Tsatas.

I'd personally only trade our 2022 first for a young star defender - Charlie Ballard, Sam Taylor etc. which is unlikely considering they've both signed long term deals.

A lot of water to go under the bridge and the rankings are notorious for changing a lot from now until the end of this year, but it appears the top 5 or so are all likely to be midfielders again.

There's certainly some talls in and around the mid first round, but there were those types this year. Im not sure you trade a Callaghan for a Jye Amiss or Leek Aleer.

As Melbourne and Richmond have shown in recent years, you really can't have enough players with leg speed. Someone like Tsatas would really appeal to us I think depending on how low we finish. He's probably this years Callaghan, where he as electric pace and really damaging kicking skills.

Would an extremely strong inside type like Wadlaw appeal? Maybe less so (Even though we have Cunners, Greenwood and Anderson in back end of our careers) because we have Simpkin, LDU, Powell and Phillips all as genuine center square midfielders coming through.

Recruiting someone like Oliver Hollands (Elijah Hollands brother) might also appeal as a smart all round list decision.

I think short of one of these two types, this year is the year I'd probably do the opposite. I'd be looking at trading a top 5 pick for the right established senior KPP, i.e a Darcy Moore if a bid was matched.

Agree with your comments - I suppose this is the elephant in the room though, who is the right established senior KPP? Obviously anything can happen, although it's pretty unlikely IMO.

I believe the high likelihood is we continue to draft best available, whilst using later picks to address specific needs - which I think is the right way to go about it.

Gibcus really did suit us imo and would have complimented, I think we probably missed a trick not trading 2022 into 2021 to get an additional pick.

At pick #9 that would have been easily achievable, we would have probably received some change as part of that deal also.

Sure, however Gibcus did slide. I don't know whether we'd have expected him to still be on the board at 9. FWIW, Jedd Busslinger KPD from WA looks sensational as a 2022 prospect (albeit not top 5 territory at this stage).

I recall having similar concerns around our KPF stocks going into 2021. CCJ comes from nowhere & Comben appears to have put his injury woes behind him. I'm interested to see what they have planned from a KPD perspective.

Yeah, guys do come from nowhere at times, but CCJ was recruited as a complementary piece as a third tall Ruck/Fwd.

People might say he's Goldies replacement, but he's nothing close to indicating he is that yet.

We are talking about our #1 CHB. Look at all the best sides in recent memory, their CHB has been in their top 3-4 players. They are absolutely crucial in the modern game to be an intercept marking rebound threat.

Melbourne paid big for Lever and it paid off.

Rance played the role for Richmond, then Grimes took it over.

etc etc.

I know we have piss farted around offering treasure troves of money for basically any elite player, in any position over the last 5 years.

However Moore is different, I doubt there is a better fit in the comp for us than him. He turned 26 a few days ago, slightly older than what is ideal with our age demographic, but 5-6 years left in him easily, out of contract and a top 5 interceptor in the league.

We are going to have the currency to get any deal done and we don't necessarily have to go to the top end of the draft this year.

The main problem as always will be convincing him to come here, it wouldn't be easy and will largely depend on how we play this year and if we can move up the ladder and look like a final contender in the near future.

Once again I agree with what you're saying, it's an incredibly important position to fill.

I just don't see in what world we are going to acquire Darcy Moore. Like, it's just never going to happen.

He will command 900k +
He is a terrible fit for us from a list management perspective. He would blow our salary cap out.

Elite/Prime Category - IMO Untouchable/Some question marks around age demo:
  • Moore
  • Haynes
  • Lever
  • May
  • Barrass
  • Weitering
  • Andrews
  • Aliir

Young Up Coming Category - IMO Very difficult/Near impossible to pry out, however would suit age demo perfectly:
  • Taylor
  • Ballard
  • Butts
  • Ridley
  • Reid (Based on draft position)
  • Petty
  • Pearce
  • Gibcus (Based on draft position)
  • Granger-Barrass (Based on draft position)

Young & Unknown - Easiest to pry out, however with far less certainty:
  • Nyuon
  • Worrell
  • McAsey
  • Gould
.... It's pretty limited

Thats the reason why it would have been smart to trade in for Gibcus or Alleer.

There's no absolute top end KPD's at this stage in the 2022 draft, hopefully a few emerge over the season.

So do we then look at 2023? At that stage you are starting to get really out of Sync with the midfield rebuild. Simpkin, LDU, Thomas entering their mid 20's and you have a developing 19 year old CHB.

Taylor & Ballard are the ones that I'd throw the kitchen sink at.

We are at a far different stage of rebuild to the teams you mentioned.
Committing to that sort of money for a CHB when like 70% of the list is young and expecting pay rises over the next few years would kill us IMO.
Its not the time to top up for a premiership yet.
I agree we need another KPD but not one who risks one of our young stars.
Young KPD's can be obtained relatively cheaply.
What the Dogs paid for Keath would be ideal.
Exactly, a much different stage. So again if premiership winning sides can balance the books I'm sure we can.

I'd trade two 1sts for Sam Taylor but GWS wouldn't even accept that. He's arguably the best young KPD in the game and would be as untouchable as May, Lever, Aliir etc.

GWS would want Tarryn/Philips/JHF type talent back and you can't blame them.
