I would seriously consider matching Geelongs offer for Bowes plus another year based on performance triggers. Whatever it takes to get him to agree to come over. You dont get very many opportunities for top 10 draft picks like this
One thing that is becoming clear to me is that the club has no issue with chasing flawed talent, but is not prepared to sell the farm to bring it in. And I agree with that approach.

If Jack Bowes could cut it as a midfielder GC would find a way to keep him so let's be honest we're looking at another overpaid halfback flanker and tying up our salary cap to the point that future trades would need Hunter Clark to go back on the trade table. Pick 7 probably does get us McKenzie, while Pick 9 probably misses though

As far as midfielders are concerned I honestly reckon Windhager has the potential to be a massive name in this caper. Just needs to improve his kicking and slot a few more goals to have the nuffies in the media drooling over him. I think he's got everything else in his kit bag and if he comes on as we hope, this De Goey phase will be quickly forgotten.

At face value though, we desperately need help for Howard & Wilkie down back. If we can bring in the right player it has the possibility to really ramp up our defensive capability. If Howard doesn't have to sit on the gorillas then we can make better use of his closing speed, punching and intercept marking prowess. And if Wilkie can be freed up to play a shade more offensively, well his precise left boot and solid decision making could really set us up on the rebound. Ethan Phillips? Tom Clurey is only 28 and found himself on the outer at Port. Lewis Melican maybe?

We also need one more clearance jet. Owens may fill that space but I'm not convinced at this stage of his development, and while I think Bytel has the IQ I'm worried he is deficient in other areas. If Zak Jones doesn't bounce back, and with Gresham expected to miss a big chunk of next season then we just need one more strong body who can get it done at centre bounce. Tom Mitchell and Matt Crouch would both impact immediately in that space and would be great mentors if we draft a mid at Pick 9. Rhys Mathieson, Jed Anderson, Riley Collier Dawkins could also possibly assist in that space.

Otherwise I wouldn't be averse to stacking up for next years highly touted draft. If we're going to be relatively quiet this year then let's get our hands on North's priority picks.

Although it's disappointing to miss out on De Goey at least the circus around him is over before the trade period starts so we can focus on other trades.

It wasn't unexpected that De Goey would stay with Collingwood so you would hope we have a good back up plan with some other irons in the fire.

If De Goey is performing on field, why does anyone care what he does outside of football?

Save us from ourselves is a bit of a stretch. Clark wanted to stay, De Goey is arguably the Pies best player and was willing to leave a side that finished a bees dick from a GF to come to us.

Do they make us better, yes or no. It's as simple as that for me. I'm tired of waiting for a premiership.
We'll get him when he breaches his contract next year and gets delisted by the Magpies.

We should invest in 4 first class tickets to Vegas and give them to him as thanks.

Fischer McAsay flying into Vic to meet with a Victorian club today

Not sure I'd be that keen on him when he couldn't get a game in a rebuilding Crows side and most of their supporters see him as a bust.

Now with Port getting compo for Amon, we're down to 12th on the list of draft points for this year.

Doesn't feel quite right considering we need a serious infusion of youth.

We probably won't use a huge number at the draft, so assuming we don't get the Bowes deal we could get something like 25 or 32 for Long, then take 9, 25 and 28 to the draft. I think that would be decent.

If we somehow wrangle into the Bowes deal then it could be exceptional.

I think the main thing Bytel would want is opportunities. He’d probably accept a one year deal if he thought he was going to get a game.
Bytel does have opportunities. He has the opportunity to prove himself as a best 22 St Kilda player at training and via the VFL. I don't think any of our young mids should be guaranteed AFL time. In this day and age players need to either have elite run or a penetrating kick. And if you don't have both you really need to be elite at everything else.

Surely the arrival of Lenny Hayes marks a new era for our midfield, and I trust Lenny to come in with an open mind and a keen eye. If Bytel thinks he belongs, 2023 at the Saints is as good as anywhere I think.

I am assuming they'd add an extra amount, say another 5/6k to what he's owed and then split the entire amount.
Is it legal to re-jig the terms of his original contract to suit another club?
It shouldn't be, but probably is.

What I don't get is if the Cats can do that, why don't the Sun's just do that and keep some continuity within the group?

That's the bit I font get. It's not like he's asked to leave e to go to the cTs, it's been driven by the Sun's.

So is there something under the covers that no one knows about and that's the real reason he's on the outer?

The player has to agree to the deal.

It ultimately means he gets paid more money.

As a hypothetical.

If he is owed 1.3m over the next 2. = 650k per year.

You can agree to pay him $1.5m over 3 = 500k per year.

I don’t know what he is owed. I’m just making an example
I get it's a hypothlethical, but if I was that player, do I think my next contra t is only $200 or $300k p.a.?

If I was getting $650k say and I knew I was back ended, I'd still think my next contract at worst is going to be $350-400k but if performed even better then maybe I get back to where I am.

So if it was smoothed out over 3 or 4 years, it shouldn't be a massive drop from where I'm expecting because I still want to get paid what I'm worth.

You're probably totally right, but I don't see why the player should take a hair cut, which is effectively what happens in that scenario when I already have a contract in place.
