He pulls the same trick every time he's up for a new contract - plays great for half a season and then drops back a gear as soon as it's signed. Just for the record stav told this exact scenario on a PM about three weeks ago.

The prevailing view from the industry was that team DeGoey would play hardball on the behaviour clauses but they would eventually come to a compromise.

But yeah he just throws darts. No wonder he doesn't post his info on here anymore.

Yeah it would have given us a nice little hit of dopamine if he’d picked us, but let’s be honest here, he doesn’t even play consistently well at Collingwood, a club he seems to love, so what were the chances of him playing consistently well for us, when he was basically just here for the money and because the club he really wanted to be at didn’t really trust him?

It almost certainly would have been a Brad Hill/Zac Jones type situation all over again and then there’s the risk he goes off the rails, and it’s not like he brings leadership to the table, or amazing character.

It obviously would have been great if he’d come here and it had worked out super-well, but what are the odds that that would have happened?

Myth - Geelong’s premiership is driven from ready made players they’ve bought to the club.
There are more cases of their draftees not making it, then there are of them developing into Guthrie types.

It's both, but we've brought in ready made players as well.

But none of these guys were ready made:

2021 - Stengle - troubled kid with talent, now AA and premiership player
2020 - Holmes - pick 20 who became a good player in his second year and just missed out on a flag
2019 - De Koning - pick 19 who played 20 games in his third year and won a flag
2019 - Close - rookie pick 14, huge contributor and flag winner
2018 - Jordan Clark - pick 15 who played a bunch of games then three years later was sold at a profit
2018 - Atkins - rookie pick 11, played most games since drafted and somehow became a mid
2017 - Tim Kelly - mature age pick 24 who was AA in his second year
2017 - Miers - pick 57 who was a big contributor in a flag
2016 - O'Connor - pretty raw Irish guy who became a solid contributor
2016 - Stewart - pick 40 who's now 4x AA
2016 - Henry - rookie pick 16 who just won a flag
2016 - Z Guthrie - rookie pick 33 who just won a flag
2015 - Menegola - pick 66, dumped multiple times by other clubs, ended up making the AA Squad

Sure they've had plenty not make it like every club, but I reckon a bunch of those guys are not that talented and yet became very solid players for them. At the Saints they would have been in the reserves, played a handful of senior games, got delisted.

Oh please, DeGoey would’ve been fine at the Saints.

But if I’m being real, it just never felt right. I couldn’t buy into the vision of him fitting in our team though his playing style might.

Much rather we build a good draft hand starting with that pick 7, and develop our own talent - and yes I’m aware you can do that and land a free agent - but we need to fully commit to a direction as a club, and I’d rather focus on the draft then 26+ year olds. And if that means taking a shot at Bowes then do it.

Assuming we don’t land Bowes and 7 though, what’s our next play?

The Weedman? Hardly gamechanging.

If we retain Clark, and bring back Coffield and Hayes, and they’re all in good form, plus bring in a pick 9 draftee, Lenny Hayes

and a new forwards coach, I actually think I won’t be too begrudged if that’s all we do this off-season.

We certainly have a capable list in that regard if we’re just looking at 2023, it’ll all be about consistency of effort and coaching strategy.

As for beyond 2023? It won’t be shocking thanks to our commitment to the draft, but there is no doubt we could be much better positioned. So top of the wishlist is more high quality draft picks for this year and next.

I would have thought a player who is not getting a game on 850k would be smart enough to get the best long term deal from whichever club offered it rather than nominate one club and narrow the choice of offers.

Dumb dumb dumb player manager get 10% for turning up and not actually giving smart advice which is what they are meant to be doing.

Bowes at Geelong might get 2 years with an option whereas someone else may give 2 plus another 2 gteed on good coin.

Media hype every player is going somewhere leaning to x club which is IMHO bs speculation.

The talk was that Geelong have offered a really well spelled out vision for him and were keen on him before the pick 7 came up. Are set to offer 4 years and spread his wages out over that time rather than pay $850 pa x2.

I've gone back and watched some of his vision. He's actually a bit better than I remembered. I wouldn't think he'd be a liability. Takes players on and gets around them and looks a good kick. I think he'd be an upgrade on Hunter Clark at this stage. He's probably ahead of him.

Final word on JDG. Looking at his career stats. Averages 17.7 disposals and 1.3 goals a game. Last two seasons, he is averaging 21 disposals at 1.0 goals a game. Five years @ 800k is desperate.
