Has he actually started work yet? Doesn't seem like it.
I'm pretty sure I read he doesn't actually start till November.

4. It's hard to believe that in the entire country there isn't a midfielder we have any interest in whose name wasn't De Goey. Not one. Jesus holy f'ing christ they must rate Windy and Owens, or think we're picking up Joel Selwood in the draft.
I'm as frustrated as you, but you can't get blood from a stone.
We don't need just any old midfielders- we need genuine star mids in their prime.

Unfortunately those are:
a. very expensive (trade wise) - eg dunkely (who isn't all that amazing imo) can't even be had for 2 first rounders! AND
b. very hard to convince to leave their club, especially if you aren't already knocking on the door of premiership contention.

So, yeah I'm sure we have LOTS of interest in LOTS of genuine gun midfielders... but the problem is they most likely have ZERO interest in us... unless we do something utterly irresponsible like pay a 28 year old lachie whitfield 1mill x5 or something equally as insane.

If we can't get genuine gun mids to come and play for us at the moment (eg a dunkley type or a degoey type as RFA), then the next best thing is to keep our powder dry and do nothing.

Doing nothing is better than selling the farm for a 28 year old whitfield type for 1mill x 5 or something like that.
We haven't got the weight of 4 recent flags behind us to get a look in for the likes of taranto and hopper (without overpaying massively).

Unfortunately we are gonna need to get good ourselves, before we can land the gun mid we need.

5 picks for GWS inside the top 20…

Is it 2009-10 again?!

Oh… no… we’re still kinda shit… so it ain’t.

Yeah, fair enough. Not one though. Not one single midfielder we can identify in the land that can potentially make us better and that we can convince to come. That's even worth taking a punt on!
It's pretty hard to comprehend.
I also find it hard to comprehend that, with the big clubs stockpiling talent to this degree, there aren't more players saying "Hang on...that means I've got practically no chance of playing" and having their managers get them out of there.
One more thing is that if we haven't put an offer to Bytel, surely that means we're working on something midfield-related. Surely! We discovered we had bugger all midfield depth last year. How does not keeping Bytel help? It doesn't, so what on earth is going on?

I can only assume we'll be trying to get really active in live pick trading (or trading picks leading up to the draft), or else this whole period is looking pretty unproductive for us. No trades + Bugger all picks for a mid-range club = ???

I got carried away;

GWS receive: Picks 1, 17, 32, and 59

St Kilda trade: Clark and Pick 32
St Kilda receive: Pick 19, 26 and a future 3rd, (Syd)

WCE trade: Picks 2, 20, 26
WCE get: Georgiades, Picks 8 and 14

Sydney trade: Picks 14, 17, 37, and future 3rd

Port trade: Pick 8, Georgiades and a future 2nd
Port receive: Horne Francis and Pick 37

The type of midfield we need doesn't exactly grow on trees.

We've decided we would rather use our top picks at the draft rather than use them on a midfielder who doesn't really suit our needs to look better in the 'post trade period rankings' articles.

We really need Windhager to become our version of Chad Warner.

Warner was pick 39 in 2019 and is now three years in and has become a top tier mid.

If Windhager could do the same then it changes everything.

Yeah, not the articles I'm worried about.
It's the 22 rounds of next year, rolling out the same substandard midfield all over again, and listening to the coaches tell us that it's all about effort when they start to flag after coming up against your Petracca/Oliver combos e.t.c week in week out.

He definitely has the explosiveness we lack in the middle. And his work ethic is top tier.

Oh… no… we’re still kinda s**t… so it ain’t.

They are still getting favoured over 10 years after they started as all the top 20 draft picks they were spoonfed by the AFL initially means they have an excess of good young players like Taranto, Hopper and Bruhn which they can trade for more top 20 draft picks which other clubs like us are unable to do

Which gun midfielder has moved this year in Victoria which has the explosiveness and skills that our midfield lacks? We need match winners, not more solid midfielders.

Taranto would be the closest but even then, his kicking is poor so not ideal to pair with Gresh and 2 firsts with a massive contract is a big commitment to someone who doesn't exactly fill the bill.

At this stage, there could be some cheap mid options available at the end of trade period if we want to take a chance on them to add to our midfield depth - talking the Mitchell and Crouch types who are more of what we have , or the Dow/Setterfield types who are still unproven at AFL level. But none of them are going to be the game changing mid that's going to change your opinion of our midfield next year.

Like a few we‘ll never know what might have been.

Only Dan and Nath had worse hamstrings, but he played 85 games over 9 years and only ever managed about 3 consistently good games in a row.
By all accounts he was a great clubman though, and certainly didn't deserve the crappy treatment at the end.

It will probably continue to happen until NSW can generate enough of it's own top 20 talent.....a revolving door as such.

Hasn’t really got ‘em anywhere though, has it?

I’ll happily admit I raged against their concessions, thinking they’d win a bag of flags due to them. They haven’t… at least in part cos they never get any continuity of their playing group due to constant turnover.

They’re a glorified ”farm team”.

The issue is they even lose NSW players

They have really let way too many of their academy kids get drafted to other clubs

They should be building a culture around that academy. Match the picks even if you think the next player available is slightly better

We have 3 of them in our best 22. Two they failed to draft

The night before the Saints Cats GF me and a mate were staying near the city because we are from the coast. We went for dinner and drinks and saw a poster at some pub for a bikini contest. Went in for a look and had a chat to a couple of the girls.
To cut the story short we got talking about the GF and one of the girls says 'my bf plays for the Saints' we asked who... Raph Clarke. She was pretty impressive.

Just some quick comments after trying to catch up on not much at all:

1. Please stop mentioning our draw last year. Our football was mostly putrid. Almost unwatchably putrid. The draw just meant that we got a few early wins on the back of a couple of decent quarters a game, especially while the top clubs found their feet.

2. OK for Gags to say we focus on the draft, but with the picks we've got, that should take all of a few minutes and make sweet F.A difference to anything.

3. Walsh says he doesn't want St. Kilda to be seen as irrelevant. Strong words. Has he actually started work yet? Doesn't seem like it.

4. It's hard to believe that in the entire country there isn't a midfielder we have any interest in whose name wasn't De Goey. Not one. Jesus holy f'ing christ they must rate Windy and Owens, or think we're picking up Joel Selwood in the draft.

5. I do think we'll get improvement from our list next year. Professional players must reach a point where they just get sick and tired of playing crap football and do something about it. We have just got to be at that point by now. Same goes for goalkicking. Having said that, with this year's finalists pillaging the expansion clubs while we "focus on the draft", we're unlikely to actually move much on the ladder even with that improvement. Can't plummet either with the state of the teams below us. I just hope that we play some better footy, even if we finish around 9th to 11th again.

6. Have a good day everyone, don't waste half of it listening to commercials and BS mega trades on TR!
2. Exactly. This rubbish we hear and keep repeating in here about focusing on the draft amazes me.
I want to focus on the draft... But that means actually having enough picks and making a splash. That is not what we are doing.. We have a couple of picks. Nearly everyone has about the same. If we want to use the draft to gain an edge on the competition we need bulk picks.
