What are the mechanics of actually getting him? What pick would we most likely have to use?
If he goes into the draft could other clubs not pick him, or is it the case of where he’s said hes only interested in a particular club?
Its a strange situation.
Ssp or delisted free agent we can get him as. Doesn’t have to enter the draft

Yes from me. Hill back to the wing. Coffield and McKenna on the flanks and Sinclair in the middle.
That’s already far more balanced than this season

It's getting our better players into a spot where they can do maximum damage. It was crazy not to move Sincs on ball more, especially as we faded away after the bye.

As crazy as playing Battle as a winger or Hill as a defender? Or letting Doogs kick out? Or Membrey to hold up play on offense?
I cannot effing wait to see the team without that kind of garbage killing us every week.

I just hope we haven’t made our play for him too late.

Defs worth a crack. Think he may be best 22 come next season
I don't think we are a late starter in this one. Been involved as soon as he announced he was interested in coming back to AFL.

Better than average chance to get him.

Targeting McKenna is a no brainer. Yes we have a lot of Halfbacks but he is more like Sinclair on the rebound. Offers a lot more then the likes of Webster, Paton, Connolly, Hill Clarke and Coffield in that regard. Surely we can rule out drafting a halfback flanker in the draft if we get McKenna.

It also shows a massive mindset shift in how we want to play moving forward.

Webster Howard Wilkie
McKenna Battle Coffield

Sincs to the middle, Clark to the midfield group where he earns a mid spot or ply’s his trade at Sandy. Hill rotating between Half Forward mm op and Wing.

Ok, thanks that’s great then. Just a list spot and $$$.
Get to work BJ!
We have both to spare. Better than giving a two year deal to a draftee at the back end of a weak draft or a one year deal to a DFA that another club didn’t want. Hopefully they pull this one of to silence the naysayers carrying on about our lack of recruiting this year

McKenna's extreme pace would be pretty handy & a nice compliment to what we already have off half back.

He would certainly give Ross some options as you've mentioned.

Fingers crossed this comes to fruition.

How much speed do we have through the midfield?

I could see CMac being used at some centre bounces with a 'see ball, get ball' instruction to try and just get those first two steps out of the pack and clear the contest.

That's the exciting thing about Ross; He will actually move pieces around to try and get them playing better football.

Patrick Mulcahy (Irish Times) says St Kilda are the favourites but he might be just repeating news feeds !!!!

CMac gets about as many clearances as Brad Hill.

Which pieces did Ross move around in our previous experience?
If we had a forward injured , he'd play one less forward and an extra CHB. If Kosi and Schneider were injured it would sometimes be just Milne forward of centre, with Riewoldt running everywhere and Mini, the non-scoring link up player.

I do sort of vaguely remember some clever , "move Sam Fisher forward " and " move Sam Gilbert forward tactics ". Plans that Richo clearly ripped off with his Carlisle manoeuvre.

Do we care about what Bucks is saying? As in, not that its Bucks, but what he is actually saying.
If we get him we're getting him basically for free. And if we really get our act together, he may stay for the duration. Not a huge risk to take him and very little cost.

Exactly.

His whole commentary is about the risk of an Irishman going home.

But an Irishman who has been here before, knows what it's like and wants to come back, is probably less of a flight risk than an Irishman who has never left home.

You’d need to see some stats but on touch and feel it seems more of the “good” Irish footballers have stayed for a pretty long term than the opposite. If they wanna go home in the mid year break and for 6 weeks at the end of the season let em.

Seems a really odd criticism to me.

The 2nd half of the drawn GF we lined up with Gilbert forward, Kosi in the ruck, Roo on the wing, Milne out of the square, Goddard on ball...

But over the years we saw Blake play ruck and KPD, Goddard all three zones, Dal and Joey played wing, half forward and half back week to week, Schneider got some on ball minutes, Dempster would play a defensive forward role some weeks.

Yes, most players had a set role but that's because they were really good at it.

I'd expect much the same next year.

There will be 15 blokes who are just set and forget but there will also be a few guys that could line up in different roles depending on form and the opposition.

CMac has traditionally been a hbf option, but I could see Ross throwing him on ball now and then for a different look. Probably not at a centre bounce, but around the ground he could charge through the pack with the aim of grabbing the ball and taking off.

Risky play but if it only happens once or twice a game it keeps the opposition on their toes every time he's near the ball.

I think that Ratts' biggest failing was that, outside of trying to get Brad Hill up to 30 touches a game, we didn't seem to change anything based on the opposition or the momentum of the game.

Members to CHB isn't game breaking and it's not going to have the opposition scrambling to work out what to do.

I think Ross is going to get pretty aggressive on game day and we will be much better for it.
