Same rule applies to this thread as other years, keep it on topic about the kids.
Don’t get bogged down on what other teams might do or where they will finish.

Trade speculation belongs here.

That's also where you can discuss your mock drafts or pick trades.

Any McCabe, Dear or Maginness talk belongs here.

They exist to ensure commercial success through priority access to under age talent. That is it. The game development benefits are secondary. The afl funds them meaning hawthorn and other clubs (and in fact the players) subsidise this through lower distributions of tv rights and other afl revenue.
It's hard to take any argument for the acadmeys seriously when players like Crawford and Hodge's sons are apart of it or when someone like Walter moves there in their teens.

I'm surprised that Adelaide took Ryan @ 27, whilst Moir was available and went @ 29.

Carlton were linked heavily so Adelaide would surely have known they wouldn't get another chance to take him.
Crows must not have rated him. They would have very good connections in Adelaide.

Now, now. Clearly the Hodge and Crawford boys would have been lost to rugby league if those academies didn't exist.

Simple solution for academy and father son picks.

1. Father Son gets first priority over academy.

2. You can trade picks 12 months out but you have to nominate your player prior to the current draft period and then use your next available pick as part of matching.

3. No discounts for 1st round picks.

What advantage is the MCG, there's no home crowd advantage which makes up the majority of a home ground advantage. How many upsets have occurred? Hawthorn were the best team 2013-15, so were Richmond 17-20. Bulldogs winning over Sydney is the only one and thats not even their home ground.
I disagree. Playing at the G frequently is a benefit come finals time, especially for the GF.

Walter moved there when he was 9.
I said players like Walter, the point is you can't claim it's there to keep players in "AFL" ecosystem when it's the only sport they were ever gonna play. If a player moved there when he was 15 after already playing for Victoria in the underage system he would be added into the system. How can anyone defend that?

Or make it open slather but give the northern clubs a cash bonus based on where the player gets drafted, as well as some salary cap concessions (extra 2% per player drafted elsewhere for a period of 3 years for example). Top 5 pick gets the highest cash bonus amount, first rounder outside this slightly less, second rounder slightly less and so on. All four of those clubs love being on the money teat so there is still an incentive for them to keep those kids. They also know far more about the less rated kids who could come on a bit so still have a competitive advantage over clubs when it comes time to drafting. However, struggling clubs who should be using the draft as equalisation which is the SOLE purpose of the draft get access to the best players accordingly.

Hopefully we can move up the order and get Ollie Murphy or Logan Morris.

Ollie Murphy, apparently one of the top defenders, we would have to bring our F1 in, would have thought. Archer reid, key forward there too. Perhaps Morris has shown more than Archer Reid, fair enough, will be Gunston replacement. How many positions do we have vacant though? maybe Dear and that is it, 3 selections. Otherwise you hope next year we can trade down to get Murphy/Reid/Morris type, more than 1, if we had to, just means we are behind 1 year in development as talls take longer.

We’re not trading our future 1st for a second round selection.

Happy in the end that we kept our future first. Still think we need blanck to make FB his position as I see that as a weakness in our current set up. We're also light for another tall frwd, especially a third tall to replace Gunston in time hence why we were interested in Duursma. Other than those two positions we look quite settled across the ground. Us going after McKay so aggressively makes more sense when you lay it out.
Our draft hand next year will be extremely important.

I find it hard to believe that you wouldn't look at a GF like say Rich vs Ade at the MCG and state that the advantage for the Demons would be negligible vs being played in Ade.

Herald Sun says it looks like we will just take Calsher Dear with our remaining picks, I wonder if we will also take Tew Jiath if he slides past pick 40

I wake up happy every day i wasn't raised as a bombers supporter 👍
An English mate of mine, a Manchester United supporter like I am, decided that the club with colours closest to United's would be his AFL team, when he started following our great game. He chose Essendon (red-and-black).

Needless to say, we've had some interesting banter over the years. I keep telling him he should've chosen St Kilda as United's colours are actually red, black and white.

Clarko spent so much time at Curtin's house that they had to ask HIM for the tv remote at one stage, yet, they passed on him with both their early picks! No wonder the kid was a bit deadpan and confused.
