2023 Crowds and TV/Streaming

Does anyone actually know when the Southern stand is being redeveloped, has a time frame been given yet?
It will be between Ashes series, which are 25/26 and 29/30. I would prefer they did it in one go like in 1991 rather than have three or four years of compromised finals crowds like in 2003 - 2005. Play the 2028 GF at Homebush.

Don't see why it will be between Ashes necessarily particularly if the Rugby World Cup final is up for grabs

Because it is the Melbourne CRICKET Ground. The MCC have said it will likely be between Ashes test. The would not want to risk another city hosting an Ashes Boxing Day test, MCG is 50/50 to get the RWC final. Count possibly start late October 2027 after the RWC and still host Boxing Day 2029.

The T20 World Cup is here again in 2028 as well, you'd assume the MCG would be the host for the final so wonder how they navigate that as well

Yeh, nah. GWS clearly had more crowd at this prelim than back in 2017. Gws roar when they goaled considerably louder this game than the near silence back in 2017. Easily more gws support this year as they should, as they're growing as a club. More neutrals too. Sickening we have to hear this Collingwood sh!t now.

Please beat Blues brissie, then knock off the wobbles in the granny.

If this is the new standard we are going to go by then the Blues have crushed the Tigers Gabba records.

Brian Taylor's commentary:

"Amazing atmosphere here and I am absolutely blown away as I look around now of the 38k capacity here, it is almost in Carlton's favour Blacky, you are in trouble because these Carlton fans get pissed and they are going to drown your mob out."

"Have a look at the crowd here, there is definitely more navy blue here I reckon than the colours of the Brisbane Lions at the moment. It is staggering how many people are supporting the Blues here today, this would have never happened to Brisbane at the Gabba ever."

"Look at the Carlton fans, they are outnumbering the Brisbane fans, it is unbelievable."

But this season as a whole has seen bigger crowds. Collingwood were pulling 60,000 plus to home games against non-victorian clubs. Some of it was due to form and how we are playing.

But as a whole it is really the first year back to normal after covid and most people have moved on from that. Last year still had a large section of people who were still concerned with going back to normal.

So after all of that people have saved money over covid but now what to get out and about and spending on entertainment is big at the moment. But is it something that will last?
Agree totally, but was talking specifically about finals 👍

Because it is the Melbourne CRICKET Ground.

OMG! How very lame!

The redevelopment of the MCG will be funded by, and the timing guided by, the AFL.

The Ashes is one test match every four years that has a highest ever boxing day crowd less than 4 finals this year.

Having "Cricket" in the Stadiums name is as relevant as having "Cricket" in the MCC's name

There is something the swans womens team are getting right for their home games in Sydney that the others including big 4 Melbourne clubs just aren't doing.

This is coming from a side that lost every game in it's first season last year, and yesterday they were playing West Coast, a team that has barely won a game in its existence, yet they have doubled the crowd of Richmond v Carlton.

Its worthy of discussion.

Agree. I think the Swans historically have had higher % of females in their base from general observations. They’ve always embraced their female fans. The Swans have as long as I can remember been a club with a strong base of female support. They’re successfully converting it to attendances. I’m also pretty sure they have the highest AFLW membership despite only just starting too. It’s a cultural thing I think.

Why do they never report on the above 54 yo age bracket?

Think the MCC will hold off whilst construction costs are inflated. Wait it out until the 2029 Boxing Day Test and begin construction Jan 2030.

edit: Don't think Oct 2027 - Aug/Sep 2029 is enough time to get it all done by Boxing Day (have to give some contingency for delays here).

Why do they never report on the above 54 yo age bracket?

The market segmentation would be based on advertiser interest / demand. Obviously the "over 54 yo age bracket" is not of significant interest....perhaps because overall they are the default FTA viewers with settled consumer preferences?

If they want a crack at the rugby world cup that will be the major non-AFL sporting event that would inform their thinking.

The last event will be an AFL grand final even if they wait until 2030 to start.

Collingwood CEO wants to increase member access to GF tickets for big clubs.

Collingwood CEO wants to increase member access to GF tickets for big clubs.

And so it should be increased. Benny Gale said the same after 2017GF.

56,000 public seating areas in Shane Warne Stand, Olympic Stand, and City End/Ponsford Stand is reduced to 35K seats (shared between the 2 competing clubs). 21K seats and prime seating I would say is a lot for sponsors, clubs, etc

AFL members (21K seats) is also reduced to 15-16K due to medallion club members having access to the reserve.

Yes, you will still get a lot of members, and supporters from the combined 26K that the AFL distributes to companies, AFL clubs, Medallion Club, etc but there will also be a lot more non-competing supporters in attendance from this 26K.

True rank and file members should be getting a greater share of GF tickets, as kelly said at least 20,000 per competing club.

Collingwood are going to cap their year of record crowds by breaking the one record I thought would be safe: the record total for a season including finals.

The previous record was set in 2010, a year that saw Collingwood combine a record H&A season with getting an extra Grand Final (& 4 finals in total) and for that reason I thought it was out of reach.

But the extra game for gather round and the extraordinary nature of some of the crowds, particularly the finals sees Collingwood needing only 87k at the GF to break the record.

*assuming 100k at GF

Other point of note is that Carlton with the prelim has pipped Richmond in 2018 and Essendon in 2001 to record the highest non-Pies total in history, albeit with an extra game or two.
