Would John Noble be a better player on a HBF for us than Salem?
We need marking players. We don't have enough players who can mark the contested overhead ball. Not just the big pack marks inside F50.
But out around the midfield. If it isn't out in plenty of space, our mids cannot mark the contested thing.

We are being pressured between the arcs and this is hurting our transition to F50. And our forwards are well outnumbered by the time the ball gets there.

The fact that Kosi was our biggest aerial threat forward last night makes it clear having the agility and craft to compete in the air is more important than height and weight measurements.
What it showed was the lack of F50 space, and the way we kicked the ball into F50.

We don't have enough contested marks inside our forward-line...

TMc who isn't a high mark, but rather a player who needs to lead to the ball, or to stand his ground amongst other bodies, trying to hold his ground.

van Rooyen isn't a natural flier for the high ball.

jSmith last night played too within himself... we needed him to be flying at most high balls inside F50. But the Pies had numbers on our forwards every time.
We must have tripled they're F50 entries, but we kept doing the stupid thing over and over again.

Our own methodology killed us last night... not the Pies.

Throw the kitchen sink at Naughton.
Another too soft. Why do you think the dogs aren't fighting hard for him to stay.

Did you notice last night how Fritta wouldn't contest the overhead ball, when he would have made body contact with the Pies player in the air... So he pulled out... Including when that goal shot from our long kick was touched on the line by the Pies defender.

And also in the 2nd quarter as he lined up for goal, he started his run up, and looked directly at the Big screen halfway thru his runup then back to his runup and missed that shot by a long way.

The players who let us down bigtime last night were, apart from Levers mental side of his game. Were, Hunter, Langdon, Fritta, and Oliver.
The softness when it mattered hurt us.

Oli, I am so disappointed by his game last night.
After i got home, I watched the replay right thru until about 2.00am. I studied Oliver and his positioning around the stoppage, and which way he moved in relation to the opposition mids.
If I wasn't so reluctant, I would say he wasn't trying much. But because of his past seasons with us, i'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
He appeared, to take himself out of the way of the balls likely landing spot.

Clarry’s decision making and indiscriminate long bombing was an issue last night but I’d safely place 15 names before his on a list of ineptness. He had a genuine crack as he always does.

Viney had his worst game of the year. Absolute ghost he was. Where’s your criticism of him?

Any top 5 ‘worst on for us’ list that doesn’t include the names TMac, JVR & Chandler can immediately be binned.

The other lesson I think last night showed us is giving up a whole bunch of picks to get Reid may be a bridge too far.

We have a number of holes in the list to fill. No matter how good Reid is, he's only one guy and we really need talented extra depth across most positions other than inside mid.

Hopefully some will come through trade but I'd like us to be taking 3 draftees at least with as high picks as possible. Getting pick 4 and keeping pick 5 looks a better play at this stage.

I think I’m definitely in this camp. As fantastic as Reid appears to be and how much he is talked up, there is a whole host of issues we need to sort.

With Tassie coming in and compromised drafts, it might be good to get in now before we are shut out or shuffled down the order when Tassie come in.

We've identified all our weak area's through trades in previous periods

Defence, we've aquired Lever and May
When our midfield looked stacked with inside mids, we went after Langdon and Tomlinson and when things changed with Tommo we brought along Hunter

I do not feel we've gone after an established key forward or tall since Mitch Clark (BB i know, but that was more of a north melbourne dumping), even with smalls we tried with Elliot, but haven't lured anyone since Ben Kennedy and that's not an established small

Our whole forward line (minus BB when he plays) is built through the draft and we simply don't have the time at the moment to keep investing that way

Nick ‘Wizard’ Watson would have immediate impact in a forward pocket but I agree we need a proven KPF.

Some comedy gold on the WC board in their draft/trade thread. They’ve talked themselves into a lather that Harley Reid will basically become a triple Brownlow medallist.

“He’s the love child of Heeney & Petracca only will better than both combined.”

Direct quote.

They also go on and on about how every non-WA kid in the first round of the draft poses a ‘flight risk’ … except Reid whose presumably immune to home sickness and loves the idea of holidays on Rottnest Island.

That said, they’re prepared to let him go for about five picks in the top 7. 😂

No chance we are getting Reid. After north get a compo pick and a potential academy selection plus GCs academy selections we aren't gonna have pick 5 we are gonna have pick 8. Doubt we even get access to GCs pick either.

everyone who keeps talking 4 and 5 are gonna be very disappointed

Who cares if its pick 6 or pick 8 based on academies? The exact same players are available to us.

Who would you take if we just have the one selection (5) in the top 10? Assuming Curtin, McKercher, Duursma and possibly Sanders are off the table by our pick.

Can't say I've watched enough to give a good opinion. I had issues with Watson's height but if he's good he's good. Perfect would be a midfielder who can play along the HFF or a forward who can go into the middle. We have too many one position players

Viney, Brayshaw, Sparrow and Oliver are really completely useless forward of centre

McAdam and Watson would certainly be a nice injection of quality forward of centre going into 2024.

Of perhaps equal concern is Steve May dropping off a cliff 24 months from now. Cupboard will be pretty bare back there when that happens.

Draftee key back is gonna be years away from helping more than likely is the only issue. Think we have to go to the trade table for someone there

Seeing Laurie get 3 disposals made me more ok with getting Watson

Not when you're trying to trade up for points big fella.
Who is trading pick 6 up for points? The only teams we would trade it to would be West Coast and North, and neither needs points.

It's just not pick 16. It's our later first that goes from 15 to 18 or whatever. 6 and 18 doesn't get GCs pick

Valid, but a separate issue, which is why I asked the question of your post.

6 and 18 doesn't get GCs pick

Why on earth would we offer 6 and 18 for 5?

What the Melksham, Dunstan, Brayshaw and BBBrown injuries have shown us is that even if 2 of those 4 aren't close to the best 22, we have very little depth with actual AFL experience.

Lose/trade Grundy, Harmes, Tomo, Jordon and/or Spargo, and we're seriously thin in that sense.

This is where not rotating more last year is still hurting us.
