Analysis 2023 Draft Watch

At Geelong’s pick 8, at least one of Sanders Caddy O’Sullivan will be available.
With the Campo boys in mind next year, do we pull the trigger and offer the Cats our 2 picks this year and our FF?
The time has come for the Cats to hit the draft and replace their many veterans.
Our 3 picks as opposed to a single pick may be of interest to them …

Just my opinion, but for Cats I think they'd rather quality over quantity.

Also, we have from memory, 23 (845 points), 28 (677 points), and let's say 3rd again (just using this year as reference point, so 16, 1067 points), which equals 2589 points. Pick 8 is 1551 points (hoping my points are correct). If we were to trade with Cats, I think we'd be wanting something else coming back our way.

Personally, I'm a little confused as to how many list spots we have now. Is it 2 vacant spots now? If so, would that mean 2 ND picks and 1 Rookie upgrade? Or is it 3 (which for me is 3 ND picks)?

Yep, getting to the stage where you need to be a Philadelphia lawyer to get your head around it all 🤣
The Blues may require something coming back but the 2 picks this year and the FF would have to be the guts of a deal.
The Cats have their first rounder and then nothing.
I’m sure they’d love the quality of pick 8 but with so many veterans about to exit, they’ll need to be replaced with something better than picks in the seventies and eighties …

Can't trade f1 without a f3 coming back

Collard won't be in consideration I reckon. Picking up Fantasia and Hollands means we've addressed that part of the ground for me.

Reckon we might go a mid and KPD.
Not that I want us to go out of our way to draft Collard specifically, but I don't know why picking up a 28 year old who might not make it would influence us to not draft someone who may be on the list for the next 12 years.

Maybe because in the same post we also picking up a 21 year old. We also have Motlop, Durds and Owies... all young small forwards that are semi locked into one position on the ground. (Collard in the same boat)

People who expect the competition to pause just so every one of our players can be propped to be precisely what we need them to be, and the draft to stop dead on precisely the right players for our needs are being silly. We have two picks in the 20s to early 30s in a shallow draft, if we think we can go against the grain of the draft then we are making a mistake.

Main: 32 + 1 (Fantasia) = 33 of 36
A: 6 (37, 38, 39, 40, 45, 46)
B: 3 (Akuei, 2 x Irish)

**this is assuming both Duffy & Monahan are now allowed as Cat B’s vs the rule of only 1 Irish.
If not, we have 7 x A rookies and 1 needs to be promoted which would leave us with 2 picks @ ND vs 3 on the top scenario.

Any you thinking
Assuming we keep our current picks, I realistically like any 2 of C Edwards, Shoenmaker, Hastie, Freijah and Demattia.

Think Shoenmaker and Edwards though ideally.

Because I think we are full at the position now.

We already have Fantasia, Martin, Durdin, Motlop, Fogarty and Owies who we know can all play at the level. Not to mention now Hollands and Cunningham who get pushed forward. Those 8 guys are competing for the same 4 spots in the team.

No point adding another kid to that group considering half that list is 24 and under also.

Wheras KPD we only have Weiters and Young realistically. All the others are either not at the level (Durdin, Akuei) or intercept defenders.

Also an inside mid considering our best 2 inside mids are Cripps who is 29 by the start of the season and Hewett is 28 by the start of the season. This leaves only Kennedy as a viable backup if either regresses or gets injured over the next couple years. We lost depth here in Dow and Curnow also.

AFL Draft Focus: Carlton Blues

Tall Depth:
Despite negative conjecture about his future on Royal Parade, the Blues managed to secure Tom De Koning's medium-term recommitment during the year. With running mate Marc Pittonet also re-signing for four years earlier in 2023, Carlton's starting tall stocks appear shored up.

However, behind that duo, the Blues don't figure to have a lot of key-position depth through the middle of the ground.

TL;DR
We have inexperienced rucks behind TDK and Pitto, so we need to take a ruck at the draft because that will fix it apparently?!
Also, due to a "speed imbalance" between Saad and Newman,we need another rebounding defender.

I'd like Reid and C.Edwards...

Others may need to confirm as I don't watch much VFL, would Lemmey be better suited as the KPD we need?
Played the role well in his junior year.

Reid, TDK and O'Keeffe the tandem forward/ruck combo... Plus all 3 can play KPF, if needed...

Phase Pittonet out, (Old school 1 position player) when Reid or O'Keeffe are ready... Mirkov likely to be delisted at the end of 2024.

What are thought on Koen Sanchez at one of our 20s picks? Projects as that crafty forward that can also push up into the midfield. A little small but has a decent frame.
Sanchez has natural forward instincts, but is also capable in the midfield. Penetrating kick, conversion was not quite where it should be at the championships. His underage year was punctuated with injury and as such, was just getting going when showing his quality in a poor WA side. That quality earned him All-Australian selection.

Listed at 179cm from memory, but plays quite a bit taller. I believe he would be a very low risk selection. Seems almost certain to “make it” and his potential ceiling is very high (reluctant to say it, but to me could channel a bit of one T.Greene).

Clearly I rate him highly.

I reiterate it is a difficult draft to read, but I am perhaps leaning to Sanchez and Zane Zakostelsky as a combination. The retention of both Lewis Young and Sam Durdin does have me wondering if we intend to draft a future KPD prospect though.
