List Mgmt. 2023 List Management and Trading (Part 2)

Do you have a link to the article? I can't find anything on Google or the AFL website. Not doubting you, just trying to find the article you referenced.
From the article below:

"For instance, it would have allowed Adelaide to list one of Rory Sloane or Taylor Walker as a veteran for 2024 and opened up another spot on their primary list. The idea was designed to keep veterans in the game without sacrificing a list spot that a youngster may have taken, with the veteran’s full payments still counted in the salary cap."

Is this true?

Does anyone know
We are taking in the same number of picks as list spots, so won't be a technical issue.

The practical issue is that we have to upgrade Murray, so we can only use 2 picks. So we either need to delist and rookie someone (which I think will happen) or take the punt that we will be able to trade one up/ out on the night.

Also, Gold Coast are taking in a lot more picks than list spots. Rules changed back in 2020 to allow this.

this sounds like a bit of bed wetting to me

everyone seems to feel the need to trade, just to be seen to be doing something

let’s be brutally honest

this trade period as a whole has been so underwhelming

it’s been nothing more than role or fringe players moving clubs and in the process being way over priced by there current clubs

there has been no big name trades like Dawson on Izak to Adelaide, it’s been underwhelming right across the comp

let’s just cool our jets and not feel like we need to be trading just to be seen to be active

Don't know about that both Melbourne and Brisbane seem to have got one of the players they were looking for to fill a need.

It’s a club stated objective that we would be bringing in experienced players at this stage of our rebuild. So take it up with the club.

Have we not gone backwards in term of experienced quality players on our list, yes or no?

In terms of preference, I’d rather have risked nothing for a final run at retaining him

If we ended up with nothing via the PSD, we’re talking a pick around 40

Neither here nor there

We’re so freaking cashed up, we must have had a fair chance of turning his head back
Your answer is right there.

We had all the money in the world to retain him, and yet he was going.

So - why? We didn't want to keep him? He was committed to going no matter what?

Whatever - it's clearly pretty mutual about him going.

We held out, pushed for a player and when we couldn't get what we wanted, held for an F2, which is better than nearly every media observer thought.

I don't understand fans who are obsessed with winning trade week. Sydney doesn't win trade week, Collingwood doesn't - they just go and get players and pay a reasonable price to close the deal quickly. Essendon wants to win trades and look where it gets them.

Gold Coast aren't though. Their later picks will fall off, but they also don't need them.

💯 agree. I don’t want to be a ‘busy’ club that is just trading in crap ( hello powa) . Also we have had a solid crack at a quality player in petty who’s in contract and paved the way for him joining in the next 1-2 years. I’d much rather we pursue quality than be busy for the sake of it

It has nothing to do with wanting to win trade week, where did you come up with that? It’s all about improving our list and not going backwards.

What's the point of going to the draft if you don't improve as the players mature?
It's when you have no choice. Maybe things will evolve and we do get an A grade mid next offseason, Hayward free agent and Petty the year after.

There's really not too many holes in the realistic 2026-2030 push.

Issue will be no Tex, Laird, Smith etc.

Ruck - Thilthorpe??
KPD - Petty?
Midfielder - Oliver after year of trouble?
Key forward - ?? Welsh in late 2020s.
Wing - 2023 draft

On above holes to me OSullivan makes sense.

What about what Collingwood last trade period, what did you think then?

Clubs can’t afford to stand still and lose players. You need to fill holes in your list, some clubs are doing that.

Our club said we will be targeting bringing in experienced players at this stage of our rebuild, instead we’ve lost some.

It’s worse, we actually lost players.
I personally couldn't care less about Doedee and McAdam.

McAdam is too old for our realistic flag window (3 years time or more).
Doedee is surplus to needs (Hinge, Michalanney and Worrell).

Real issue I have is we haven't added players in obvious holes that would improve the team and make the side more attractive to 2024 and 2025 targets to close the gap further with the top 4 sides.

I’m not fussed about Doedee but we have no one that plays like McAdam.

With development of our squad, we should be making finals and had we filled some holes, McAdam could have been here in our window.

Like I've said above, I don't see McAdam as being there in our realistic time frame.
Given his injury history, and inability to put a season together even as a 28 year old, I have no faith we would be doing it as a 31 year old.

He's replacable and no Charlie Cameron.

Rankine, Fogarty, Rachele (for now) are mainstays. Who knows where Thilthorpe ends up.
I think Hayward is good chance of happening next year now.
Welsh obviously comes in.

Players like Cook, Taylor, Dowling, Gollant get a chance in the next couple of years with that spot free or at worst we can target someone in 2024/2025/2026 drafts, trade and free agency.

Remember we don't have that many holes now.
Will be easier to target specific role players when the make-up of the side is locked into 21 obvious starters.

Whatever - it's clearly pretty mutual about him going.

Is it? When was the last time we went out publicly and said we wanted to keep a player and we’re still trying to change his mind

I can’t recall ever?

Maybe my memory is going (and I’ll not argue too hard) but I’ve never seen us do this

We held out, pushed for a player and when we couldn't get what we wanted, held for an F2, which is better than nearly every media observer thought.

We’ve been sitting on that F2 since about midway through last week - how were we holding out for what we already had; and publicly rejected?

We said it wasn’t enough last week

Petty isn’t coming, ever.

If we don’t get him now, the Dees have a captive audience with him for 2 more years to negotiate and re-sign him

My prediction is that if he doesn’t come to us tomorrow (and that looks very unlikely) he’ll get a new contract and extension from the Dees by Christmas

2 years is just too long wait. He won’t, and we won’t

It’s now or never, and I’m guessing it’s never
