Do you have a link to the article? I can't find anything on Google or the AFL website. Not doubting you, just trying to find the article you referenced.
From the article below:

"For instance, it would have allowed Adelaide to list one of Rory Sloane or Taylor Walker as a veteran for 2024 and opened up another spot on their primary list. The idea was designed to keep veterans in the game without sacrificing a list spot that a youngster may have taken, with the veteran’s full payments still counted in the salary cap."

On the night, pick 9 for pick 10 and a F2 is absolutely worth it IF the player we really want is there and a deal has been done because Essendon are after a different player possibly
sorry i misunderstood. IF Dons are going for a different player you are assuming Dons know this fact but we dont? Otherwise why would we do this deal?

I am assuming we will have an idea but Essendon won't outright tell us as they stand to gain from a trade..so its paying for the ability to remove the unknown i suppose

In the U18 champs, Sid Draper was better than all the current SA draft prospects.
Any opportunity to trade current picks into 2024 is meaningful and will pay dividends.

WA's 2 clubs have big gaps from #1 (WCE) to #23 (WCE) and #34 (Freo) so they could bid on our 1st Rounders to secure local lads at #10 / #14 / #20 in exchange for their F1 or F2 in 2024. I feel like that's more likely than getting a deal done with Geelong who are notoriously difficult to deal with.

Well it was also GWS's plan according to his manager David Trotter so there's that as well.

He was a genuine swingman in his junior career playing plenty in defence so he's not totally new to it.

Why not? Costs nothing to try him in the SANFL for starters, could be like his ruckwork which has improved considerably over the years.
May as well give it a crack. Some are basing their decision on but he was soundly beaten on the one time he played in defense.

We should be doing everything in our power to get this kid. A generational midfielder.

Then the simple answer is we have to be trying whatever we can to get WCE to trade their F1 to us - try a Carlton style pick swap..it might be the only way we get a possible top 3 pick next year

There's also this...

Reid said Burgess’s versatility would be important while defender Nick Murray recovered from a knee reconstruction that could sideline him for up to three quarters of next season.

He also flagged a potential backline switch for key forward Elliott Himmelberg.

The list boss said Adelaide needed to bring a replacement in for Himmelberg to grant him his wish of joining his younger brother, Harry, at GWS.

Reid said the club, which now had selections 10, 14 and 20 this year, was keen to climb the order before next month’s draft.

It had been in conversations with Geelong, which held pick 8.

“We’ll certainly look to get up … whether that’s between now and the draft or on draft night itself,” Reid said.
One thing with Burgess, he is no pea heart.

Good plug and play depth guy at both ends and even pinch hit Ruck.

Still think having Sloane next year is going to hurt us going forward, really poor decision.

Yup. That's one of those contracts which hurt the soul of a club, seeing it means one of clubs best players (I'm sure there is a better way to describe it, but I'm having a brain fart) go out with a whimper instead of as a valued best 22 member.

Bit like Thommo in 2017.

It's a little suspicious these WCE fans seem so keen to offload their F1 pick.

West Coast were awful this year mostly due to injuries, right? Presumably they'll be a fair bit better next year?

They were awful last year as well, so it shouldn't be assumed they'll be any better next year.

Awful to the point that a 70% and a spoon is a big improvement.
