what's the point if you're going to ignore the key component of the discussion? And we're not contending next year, we'd need a similarly good run with injuries, which we're already behind the 8 ball with. It's more likely we go a little backwards than forward enough to be in the discussion for top 4. Foregoing a shot at another Rankine or Rachele for the sake of trading for a player to get an extra year would be crazy stupid. When we did it for Gibbs in 2017 it had merit as we had every reason to think we'd be around the top 4 again. Even then, if he was coming to FA the next year, you'd have to wonder whether it would be worth pulling the trigger just to have him for 2018.
I’m sorry but if you think that we are more likely to go backwards than forwards next year then you are allowing your natural pessimism to overrule any logical analysis. by the end of the year we were clearly better than St Kilda, Bulldogs and Port and we have the second youngest playing group in the comp. Any unbiased and unemotional predictions for 2024 would have Adelaide in the top 6, and if we happened to upgrade at the midfield and/or key back positions then this would only go higher.

Cant sign up Hately as sanfl captain..

I think we can only sign our AFL players who have done 10 years at the club to our sanfl team under current rules..
I can see Riley Knight being our next SANFL captain. Is already on our payroll with his AFLW role. Plus the WWT Eagles aren't much chop ATM so not much incentive to stay there.

OK didnt know that. Madgen will have to take over then

ive found this from last year

Adjustments ratified by the SA Football Commission for 2022:

  • AFL’s Stand Rule adopted, asking players to remain idle while standing the mark once a free kick has been paid.
  • Activated AFL medical substitutes will be permitted to play in the SANFL on the same weekend as long as opposition club is notified within 60 minutes of the conclusion of the AFL match.
  • Any delisted AFL player who has not played AFL or State League, or been on an AFL list for the past 12 months (previously 24 months), can be supplementary listed to play SANFL for AFC or PAFC.
  • A player who has served a minimum of 10 years on either Adelaide's or Port Adelaide's AFL list can be included on the supplementary (SANFL) List of the AFL club where they served the 10-year period.
  • Increasing the age range of interstate players AFL Clubs can include on their supplementary (SANFL) lists from 19 to 21 years to 19 to 23 years of age.
  • Adelaide and Port Adelaide would have access to Father-Son prospects in their 18th year, for a full season to play in their SANFL team - if they haven't already played League with their SANFL club. In this instance, the AFL club would pay the player's SANFL club a $5000 transfer fee.
  • Removal of a transfer fee for Next Generation Academy and Father-Son players in their 18th and 19th year, who are yet to play League Football at their SANFL club, allowing them an opportunity to play and train with their AFL-aligned SANFL club over a four-week period.

So Madgen it is then.

Why would he want to come here? He is an upcoming star in a side that has been contending for a while and will continue to contend for a while. May well be a premiership player in a fortnight

And financially will be well looked after. No reason for him to look here

He would be 5th or 6th on the list in terms of his salary at the Lions, we could offer him $900K a year for 5 years and basically make him our highest paid player. An extra $150-200K per year over 5 years is huge money. I would think he would be behind Neale, Daniher, Cameron, Dunkley and maybe Andrews, Rayner and Bailey. And the you have Ashcroft who will get a good size contract soon.

Plus, Lions are right in the middle of their premiership run now, they have maybe 1 or 2 more years before they start coming down the other side. We are just about to enter our window, and ours will be open for another 4-5 years. So if the Lions do win it this year he may be content to leave and go to a team like us who will be about to start contending.

I agree the chances of him coming would be pretty remote, if he was to leave it would likely be to a big Vic club, but he is the exact type of player we should be throwing a big long term contract at right now, as he is the exact type of player our midfield is crying out for.

If they still think he's good depth.

Came over in the PSD from GWS when we needed good news, has played well in the 2nds.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but letting Brown go and moving Hately to rookie frees a spot on the main list for Borlase doesn't it?

It would be a good move IMO.
I would be shocked to see either Hately or Brown on any of our lists in 2024. It's time to move them both on, and recruit some players who may have a future at AFL level (Hately & Brown are fine at SANFL level, but nowhere near it at AFL level).

To captain the SANFL with Wright likely retiring.
If that's the case, then we can delist him and sign him to our SANFL team. It's not a reason for keeping him on the rookie list.

EDIT: Apparently he's not eligible to be signed to our SANFL team. In that case, it's "sayonara", because making him Captain of the SANFL team is not sufficient justification for keeping him on the rookie list.

AFL trade news 2023: Melbourne working out deals for Brodie Grundy, Shane McAdam

Could the Crows take what Melbourne get for Brodie Grundy in the deal of Shane McAdam? Or is a South Australian Demon in their sights? Get the latest trade intel.

Melbourne won’t stand in the way of Brodie Grundy’s trade request to Sydney as the Demons search the competition for a replacement back-up big man.
It shapes as a busy trade period for the Demons, who look set to permit Grundy’s move to the Swans for a potential second-round draft pick and welcome Adelaide Crows’ playmaker Shane McAdam.

Adelaide wants a mature-age player in return but will face heavy resistance from Melbourne if the Crows zero in on versatile tall Harrison Petty or hard nut midfielder Tom Sparrow.

Melbourne could look to let go of James Harmes, 27, or Adam Tomlinson, 30, in a deal for McAdam, 28.

But the Demons will likely meet with Grundy, 29, in the next couple of days as part of the club’s player exit meetings following an agonizing second-straight straight-sets finals departure on Friday night.

Grundy is almost certain to tell the club he wants to play for the Swans next year where, he will lead John Longmire’s ruck division and partner up with assistant coach and champion West Coast ruckman Dean Cox.

The Swans have picks 22 (from Hawthorn) and 30 to do the deal one year after Melbourne parted with pick 27 for the dual All-Australian.
Yes to Sparrow, no to the rest.

I doubt Reid and co have the skill to pull a deal like this off but this would be a win IMO given the lack of quality in this years draft.

I haven't seen enough of him but if there is a midfielder from South Australia going top 5 next year we should be positioning ourselves to have a go in 2024, then take Welsh and Michaelaney as f/s.

happy to do that, where I'm not happy is that we spend it all on McCluggage who we could get for no draft capital in 2025. If Hugh was in year 2 of a 5 year deal, it'd be different, but he's 1 year from FA, which means whatever we pay for him needs to return dividend in only 2024. It's a hell of a lot to pay for a single year.
Going back to your scenario, there could be another angle to play if we were bold.

The dogs are going hard for pick 4 from the suns if reports are to be believed. They have picks 10 & 17, a 2nd rounder and their future picks

IF GC are seeking points and are wanting a future 1st in the deal, might it be out of the realms that we might be able to piggy back onto the deal something like this:-

GC
in - Crows 20, Doedee compo (should be somewhere in the 2nd round), Dogs pick 36 and Dogs F1
Out - pick 4

Dogs
in - Pick 4, pick 22
Out - Picks 10, 36 & F1

Crows
in - Pick 10
Out - Picks 20, 22 Doedee Compo

The dogs have Croft who is still likely to be be bid on before their pick 17, but if they have that pick they can auction it off to get a better points return etc without it being swallowed up in a GC trade - maybe even trade with a club for a late F1? knowing they have pick 22 which they could further split for more points for matching the bid

We then have Picks 9 & 10 and retain our F1 - so we could then look to on trade either 9 or 10 for a F1. We can still then likely grab Darcy Wilson this year and upgrade some rookies and maybe take a late end pick. But we would have a full suite of future picks and an additional F1 to go after that top end mid without compromising getting in a top kid this year.

GC get a heap of extra points this year to cover off on the loss of 4 AND get the F1 on top

It could be a win / win / win?????

Correct hence why i said to delist him. I adjusted my post after seeing they have to have had 10 years on our list to be captain so its a no to him anyway.. Madgen will be captain. Smith Walker and Sloane are the only others eligible and they are all contracted

I differ on this ....in Finals systems often are dishevelled, the game is more about taking ground, by any means

Port yesterday, allowed GWS to play their system, without enough pressure to crack it

Therefore IMO ....players have to have the skills, competitiveness, and ball winning skills ...NOT to have to depend on a system ....they'll look great in a good system, but they're the type of players that can help turn momentum, that's running against us

It's why I value Murphy ...Pedlar, and Keays
Well I differ on your difference...

Do you think any AFL coach is going to outright abandon their system come finals?
Of course not. If they had to do that they should've gone with one that they wouldn't have to change since the start of the pre-season.

For example we wouldn't alter our extra-at-the-contest-leave-the-backline-even-numbers-and-let-them-have-an-extra-in-our-forward-line game plan would we? We're unlikely to abandon getting ROB to tap it down and instead try to hit it to runners going past.

In finals the contest gets a lot hotter. In finals you want players that despite the heat and fatigue can hold the system together the best, not abandon it and play a solo game.

This is the key point.

You need to identify the players who fall apart in these scenarios and get rid of them ASAP (I'll cut a first or second year player some slack though).

Duursma for Port should be straight out the door on the back of that performance. Piss him off and start getting games into someone else.

Sholl is probably the equivalent for us.

Is Dyson Sharp in next years draft or 2025? We should be doing everything in our power to get at least one of these kids.

What about Bailey Laurie for McAdam? He is a quick midfielder and good kick. Yes he's not the big body mid we need but was a high draft pick not given a lot of opportunities and we need to improve that area of our squad.
We need to get someone with class for a player of McAdams ability.

So under a normal Draft, our pick #20 would get a 3 year Contract ....however because of the Academy's and compo picks, Club will miss out again

Northern Clubs the big winners again

Having watched the Port-GWS game, it might be good we didn't get Harry Himmelberg. He was AWFUL.
Always caught in no mans land. Had goals kicked on him and got caught with the ball a lot.
Probably his worst game for the year... but had a very good season.

Have you only watched the one GWS game this season?…

Harry had a bit of a dirty night on Sat night..

but he’s been a gun for them all year. Would take him at the crows in an instant.
