Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Who cares about hit outs. Clearances are what counts.
Ruckmans job is to take marks around the ground and generate clearances, if he generates clearances by being twice as athletic as the other ruck once it hits the ground then the hitouts are irrelevant.

I also think a Dogga clearance is different to your average clearance because it’s often him bursting away from some treacle slow ruck
Exactly! FMD - is there a more irrelevant statement than hitouts?

Cox is the one that worries me; if he left then I think that sets us back far more than any of last year's trades, and in conjunction presumably with Pearce a couple of years later to Tassie rips a big experience hole in the backline, even with some talented key position defenders being developed. I just can't help but think that all the talk at the start of the year about getting Naughton or Pickett must be driven by some trade that we were inevitably going to have to make because someone was tempted by a massive contract, and I can imagine Adelaide being a tempting prospect for him if the offer was there, given they seem to be on the rise again.

I would rather we retained Cox and lost Treacy than the other way around.
crows would have to be pretty happy with their defensive stocks atm with murray, butts michalany and even that worrell looking very good this season, looks like theyre after redman as well so think Cox is pretty safe

Crows defensive stocks look good because their pressure on the ball is so high

Cox would easily be their best defender and replace doedee when he goes home this year

Fwiw I think cox stays anyway

Don't listen anymore.

Being based in Sydney duff and quarters was a great podcast with a freo element to i enjoyed getting proper analysis about the club. Not from some naive muppets in Victoria.

Unfortunately Adrian Barich is a dribbler and I cbf wasting 2 hours of my week listening to him

Here's what I sent to the podcast after their first episode this year:

"Hello,

I have been listening to The Game pod since it started. I've written in a few times and had my questions answered on the air. I even won the free beer one week! :) I always looked forward to the two pods a week and valued Duff and Quarters opinions and enjoyed their stories. I wanted to provide you with feedback on what I heard during my first listen to the new format.

In short, it was very hard to listen to. It was two blokes trying to talk over one another, zigging and zagging from topic to topic with Barra trying to outdo or critique everything Quarters was saying. It reminded me of listening to my 14 year old son and his adolescent friends talk about soccer and whose team is better. It was almost exhausting to listen to and I found myself looking at how long was left in the pod only 20 minutes into it. I made it probably 80% through before I had to turn it off.

I think Quarters is great, but I'm sorry to say I can't get around Barra. I'm not going to rip him since I'm sure he's trying his best, but I will be unsubscribing from the pod and listening to the other great content put out by the "amateurs" (Purple Reign, The Restump, Flagmantle, Handy Point, Lace out, Junk Time, etc...). There's too much good stuff out there to listen to this. I'll give it another listen half way through the season to see if it's improved. Maybe Barra just needs some time to get used to the format. Maybe he's just not my style. Maybe he's just not a good podcaster.

Anyway, as a loyal listener to the previous seasons, I thought it was important to share this feedback. Cheers."

So with us grabbing Efan that probably means we’re not to into or don’t think we’re getting Sharp

First thing I thought about was Liam Henry potentially leaving us tbh.

Having said that if we were genuinely going with ‘best available’ most mock MSDs had Stanley higher than our selection so it might be a case of us simply picking our highest rated player.

Yeh now Docker82 mentions it, this could be more about covering some wing depth if Henry leaves. Which I think is more likely than not

So hopefully Sharps still a target

Don't understand the obsession with Sharp. He's not playing AFL footy and we have half a dozen young players developing strongly at Peel. Why would we recruit someone as depth? Next two years we need to draft as well as we can with the picks and otherwise look to trade in experienced quality.

We could have possibly moved on. Recruited Stanley today. Worner progressing nicely. I’ve watched GC VFL and lots of Peel games/replays and I’m confident in saying id rate Henry higher. Henry a good chance to go but if someone like Flanders or Brockman are available in a swap or three way trade I would do that. Not greatly interested in Sharp. He can head to WC.

I honestly saw Sharp as a cheap replacement for Henry. We’d get ** all for Henry, trade ** all for Sharp and be able to focus our draft picks elsewhere. If Stanley shows enough I doubt it’s even worth considering anymore.

We’ll need to make six spots on the senior list to upgrade both Treacy and Banfield and select four players at the National Draft. I wouldn’t pass on North’s 4th rounder if we still have it on draft night tbh but if we can package up our picks and/or what we get for Henry to move up the order a bit I’m certainly not against using only three selections this year.

My priority would be keeping as much of our list together as possible and maximising our draft position. Not sure Sharp is good enough for me to want to defer too far from that.

He's not playing because suns know he's leaving.

I disagree. Have you watched some of his VFL games. He has had a couple of decent games but the majority vanilla and very soft. Doesn’t get any hardball and runs forward too much.

If he was good enough he would get a game. After all the Suns played hardball and wouldn’t let him go.

He can go to WC. Henry gets a lot criticism here and some of his efforts in last couple of AFL games warranted the criticism. However at Peel he has been good. Yes a few turnovers on kicks not executed as he should but they are attacking kicks. He has been racking up high tackle numbers and playing reasonably well. Henry has had the much better season to date.

Anyway I’d suggest Henry is odds on for a trade. Yes we won’t get too much - prob early to mid third would be the range.

I’d be looking to use the added draft capital to focus on another player. Like Flanders or Brockman. I’ve come around to Brockman even though he isn’t a standout.

Listwise with Hansen not being there it would make sense.

I haven't watched Flanders since his draft year but I liked him then, so would be interesting to see what his prospects are now.
My dad's a Hawks fan so I've seen more of Brockman and it looks like there's a bit to work with there.

P.S. love your insights from the other leagues, thanks for the contribution!

'BIG COHUNA' HEADING FOR NEW DEAL

FREMANTLE youngster Josh Treacy is hopeful of being rewarded for his impressive recent return to the side's forward line, with the Dockers expected to soon begin discussions over a new deal for the rookie.

Treacy has provided a spark for Justin Longmuir's attack since earning a recall to the senior team a month ago, kicking a goal in every game he's played this year and slotting two important majors in the side's win over Melbourne on the weekend.

It follows a breakout maiden campaign with Fremantle in 2021, where he kicked 13 goals from 15 matches, before his 2022 season was hampered by groin and ankle injuries – as well as a bout of glandular fever – that kept him to just four appearances.

The powerful 20-year-old is coming towards the end of the two-year rookie extension he penned in 2021, but Treacy's manager Matt Bain of TLA Worldwide told AFL.com.au's trade and draft show Gettable that talks over a new deal will begin soon.

"He's a bull at the gate. It's about reminding him that he's still young. For a key forward he's posting up some good numbers, especially in his first year," Bain told Gettable.

"We'll catch up with the club pretty soon and get something sorted, hopefully. Their forward line is in pretty good nick at the moment." – Riley Beveridge

why would you play a player you know if leaving your club when you have other wingers?

freo have like him since draft his year

This is a foreign concept but given the state of our list with seemingly every position looking healthy with some kind of depth and the success (for the price paid) of everyone traded in since Walls and Bell were officially in charge are we approaching kind of blind faith in whatever the list team do?

It’s a scary feeling and I’m not sure I like it…

If they sign Treacy, Darcy and Cox to extensions over the bye then I'd say yes. It has since become apparent that they valued Logue, Acres and Lobb exactly what they were actually worth, especially to our list. We have literally built our list off astute drafting and trading and getting value for players leaving. I honestly think that hardly any other list management team in the league, if any, could have lost the quality of players that Freo have done and used it to build a contending list like Freo have

The only blip on the radar over the last few years was the Hogan trade and even then there was some funny business with the old administration that we still don't exactly know what happened

Doedee is a rebounding HBF. They are after Redman to replace him.

Cox would be replacing Butts or Murray, and I think they would be happy enough with them for the $$$ involved. They'd be better off investing the capital into the midfield.

Mid-Season Draft: Walyalup (Fremantle) Dockers list boss David Walls reveals the four names on club’s board

Fremantle list boss David Walls has revealed the four names the club homed in on ahead of Wednesday night’s mid-season rookie draft.

The Dockers swooped on Box Hill and Frankston YCW winger Ethan Stanley with the one-and-only pick - eighth overall - to finalise their list after keeping a spot open from the pre-season.

But Walls said the 19-year-old bolter wasn’t the only one in consideration with Subiaco speedster Robert Hansen Jr, taken with the second pick overall by North Melbourne, and Perth key forward Jaiden Hunter (pick nine to Essendon) two local players in the mix.
Top selection Ryan Maric, the Gippsland Power forward who landed at West Coast as expected, was the fourth name on Freo’s board but was well and truly gone by the time their pick came around.
With Maric and Hansen Jr already snapped up, Walls said the Dockers would’ve picked up Hunter, who’s bounced back from two years of injury hell to earn a long-awaited AFL opportunity after an impressive stint of league footy since returning from an ACL rupture, had the hard-running 189cm Stanley not still been available.

Walls conceded Hunter’s limited run in, playing just three senior games before the draft, counted against him.

The 21-year-old booted 11 goals in those three appearances including five in front of Bombers recruiting boss Adrian Dodoro in a shock win over South Fremantle on Saturday which helped seal a spot on Essendon’s list.

“We would’ve looked at Hunter,” Walls told The West Australian.

“We had four names going in and I really liked what Jaiden has been doing but for us, we probably would’ve liked to have seen a little bit more rather than three league games and we just probably had a bit more evidence on Ethan.”

Halls admits he was surprised Stanley was still on the board by the time their pick came around.
“We thought he was more unlikely than likely to be there,” he said.
“I guess that fact that he didn’t nominate 18 months generally means they haven’t had a commitment from a club so that gave a bit of an inkling there.
“I think Hawthorn would’ve picked him but they were keen to get a tall in at some stage.
“They were likely to take him with their second pick and a fair few other clubs had expressed interest so overall we were surprised that he was still there.
Walls said the second Young Guns game last month was the “sealer” for Stanley, who was remarkably still playing under-19 amateurs in Victoria for Frankston YCW this time last year, after he caught their eye playing for Box Hill earlier this season.
“We didn’t even know about him last year, he was playing local footy in a league that doesn’t even get filmed, Walls said.
“He was very much unknown to us and then he went to Box Hill on a trial and got through.

“They were pretty healthy Hawthorn and only 5-6 non AFL-listed players were getting picked and he was getting picked early.
“He was doing enough to keep me interested and he’s a good size and a good athlete and as it progressed, we had more and more interest in him.
“The Young Guns was probably the sealer, in that second Young Guns game he played really well and kicked a couple of goals off the wing and did it in the two following VFL games for Box Hill.
“He’s showed us enough attributes that with how raw he is, with some good coaching and development, he’s a good kid that’s going to work hard and it might take a little while but we feel like there might be a player there in a couple of years.”

The part I like about it is we can afford to take some risks at the draft now. Try and grab a "difference maker" type player with our earlier picks and speculate the hell out of later picks.

I think we have all the cake, we need some more cream.

Just goes to show it was a best available selection rather than anything too sinister with Henry or Sharp. No doubt Colin Young will read into it though and be trying to get Henry out
