Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Got a feeling Henry is just trying to gauge interest early in case he doesn’t become best 22 here tbh.

We’ve got a bunch of non-best 22 30+ year olds (Hamling, Wilson, Colyer etc) that’ll probably be the first to go if the club thinks they have enough depth in their roles. I’d say Benning and Kuek would need to show a bit to stay on the list (more confident in Kuek atm). Sturt probably as well. After that it’s hard to see who else we’ll cut - and we’ll cut at least five going off history.

In the balance of things we’ll probably give Henry a one year deal if he’s not best 22. Why would he accept that if he’s getting offered 2-3 elsewhere?

If he becomes best 22 I reckon he’ll stay on a 2-3 year deal and we don’t bother chasing Sharp.
Henry is an interesting case. He certainly has talent, but there were a couple of games at Peel he looked like he was cooked in the 4th or not trying. Maybe he just needs to work on his tank and running to get to more contests? I hope that's all it is.

The good news for him is that there is a spot on the wing if he works hard and earns it. There's probably a wing/hhf role for him as well, which may even be my preference. If at the end of the year he's still not best 22, then que sera sera.

Agree on Benning, Kuek and Sturt. Pretty big year for them. I keep holding out hope we see the Sturt from that Essendon game again. He was frekin awesome! Not sure who this one is, but I'm pretty sure we've just found proof that shape-shifters live amongst us.

Colyer would have to be close to hanging up the boots, but he's excellent depth, ditto Wilson. I hope they both stay around for a couple more years.

Hamling is 29. If his ankle really is fine, there's no reason he can't pound out 2 or 3 more good years. With Cox and Pearce and their injuries, I like him on the list, particularly while we develop Dixon and Draper.

Colyer was signed up just after the mid season break (14/07/2022) for one year. Problem was soon after being signed he was dropped and consigned to Peel. He played a couple of ok games but generally underwhelming at Peel. This I feel will be his final season.

Wilson signed very late and only after a number of confirmed players seeking new clubs via trades. I also feel this will be his last.

Agree on Hamling. I think most of us (prob the list management team as well) felt Hamling was in trouble around a third way through the WSFL season. He was struggling to get on the park and when on the field there were multiple games where he was hobbling. His final third of the year he really found some form and was able to manage his ankle. With Logue gone Hamling becomes quite important. If he gets through the season and plays a reasonable amount of games for Peel I feel he will get a contract extension (prob 1 year).

Kuek if he keeps going as he has deserves another year as a rookie.

Sturt who knows. Needs consistency and some AFL games. If that happens an extension of 1 year.

Henry - we hope he can nail that Wing / HHF. If not likely he will seek a trade.

Benning I don’t hold much hope personally. He played his best colts footy as a ruck. With two rucks recruited and development at Peel as KPD this is his position now but aside from good athleticism really struggles with fitness and repeat efforts. His best hope would be being moved to rookie list via delist.

Hamling is very interesting imo.

If Davies or Draper play a few games this season and looks okay I can see the club seeing they don’t need Hamling in 2024.

If Davies or Draper don’t play games this year but look good at WAFL level you’d probably want to keep Hamling rather than find a mature aged DFA or state league player that may not be any good.

Could go either way but more often than not 30+ year old (which Hamling will be by seasons end) depth players don’t end up staying on AFL lists all that often.

I think if Hamling stays healthy he is perfect depth for at least this year and next. Davies and Draper are going to be 2+ years away from being able to be as good as an 85% Hamling and we are competing now. Exact same situation but 2 years ago might be a different list decision though.

I assumed we were waiting for the intraclub and would decide today or tomorrow.
This board's reports on the intraclub seemed to indicate Serong was playing but Stubbs wasn't sighted. I wouldn't think too much of that tbh though.

One thing I found interesting was Bell's comments on the subject where I think he said Serong, Stubbs or 'someone else' then mentioned the MSD. Could the club throw a sudden surprise and pick one of the Peel boys?

I did get the impression from Bell that they were leaning away from either of the two.

I read that Stubbs has a calf injury.

That won't help his cause!

Not ideal but shouldn't make any impact on whether we sign Stubbs (unless it's really bad).
Neither selected, we’re keeping the list spot open for MSD

From freo website
“Fremantle are set to leave a list spot open and not sign a player in the Supplemental Selection Period ahead of the AFL’s 15 February deadline.

The Club gave forwards Liam Serong and Sam Stubbs the opportunity to train with the group over the pre-season, with the pair under consideration for the final rookie spot available on the list.”

Disappointing, from the outside it looked like Stubbs showed enough to potentially have a role at AFL level.

I don't know why Freo love the MSD so much, the second half of the season when they haven't played in an AFL environment all year is essentially a write off, so we need to sign them for 18 months anyway. Why not give a rookie a 12 month crack on an SSP contract and if they don't make it, release after a year and grab a rookie in the next ND?

They want to save it to possibly cover injuries. Say if Pearce and Cox went down we could pick up a mature age KPD.

We arguably have more coverage already for the spot Stubbs is up for.

I can understand leaving open the option, ensuring we have one, if we lose a player to a mid term injury then we can fill a need without losing the current player for the whole season.

I still would have liked some new late Christmas present.

If they use the MSD wisely, it’s a good move, but we keep drafting project players in the MSD instead of players who can potentially impact in the tail end of the season.

Ha, you'll hear everything on here. Two years ago Freo thought the opposite of the mid season draft when they didn't use a pick!

Nothing wrong with keeping your options open, especially if neither are going to get picked up by another club or you don't mind too much if they do, and they're very unlikely to crack a game anyway with the depth of Freo's list currently.

Why not have a crack? Why not leave it open. Six on one, half a dozen the other. From a risk mitigation point of view their position makes perfect sense.
