Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

No I don’t think so. We will get a projected top 5 pick from free agency next year (based in this seasons ladder) if he leaves so unless we get a godfather offer this off season, we can just keep him and take pick 5 next year.
Jeez I hope you are wrong there haha!!

I don't think so but I've been shocked before.

Remember Lachie Neale?
Id actually be ok with losing Darcy if it meant getting Aaron Naughton. Its pretty clear this forward line won't get us to a flag anytime soon. Amiss and Treacy need 2-3 more years of growth and the small I just really don't know.

Does anyone think that is the last we have seen of Darcy in purple?

Redditors seem to have convinced themselves he's gone based on a spurious "I know a girl he used to date" sort of rumour.

But they're well...redditors. So it can be taken with a heavy dose of salt.

In saying that, it's pretty easy to see him getting sick of having his taps sharked by opposition players if things don't improve next season.

I'm not totally against it, really need Jackson to come on as a number 1 ruck though.

I just feel Darcy has a lot of value and we clearly need forwards. Also hate how its a talking point every time we lose and one of Jackson or Darcy have a bad game. Like when the media keep mentioning that you can't have 1.7 mill odd in ruck mans. 2 Months ago I was deadset against trading him, now I'm open to it.

It seems like the last 8 years has been 2 steps forward 2 steps back.

There is a list of the player still playing at another club in the last 7 years. Best 22

2022 - Logue, Lobb, Acres
2021 - Cerra
2020 - Hogan
2019 - B Hill, Langdon
2018 - Neale
2017 - Weller

We are averaging 1.5 best 22 players leaving each year.

I’m not concerned. Upgrade a future second to a mid first rounder.

Stanley, Aish, Drizz and contentiously Brayshaw can cover the mid roles.

Brodie needs to get back in the side to improve our ground ball game. That can be done by moving Brayshaw to a wing.

Freddy isn’t a natural forward either so he could play the wing if we draft a small forward

Jackson's shown that he's a pretty effective forward when we're actually capable of winning/moving the ball properly. He'll only continue to develop with Amiss and Treacy if he can limit the amount of rucking he needs to do. An in-form Darcy with a half decent midfield mix that can actually take advantage of his dominance only adds to our offensive potency.

Losing Darcy would be a significant hit to a club which has done nothing but take hits for a decade.

Ohhhh I know it would mate. But how many years are we actually gonna wait for this forward line to come on?

Yeah, I would rather lose Freddy and Switta over Schultz IMO. Schultz gets consistently more shots on goal than those two and applies the most pressure. Schultz is consistently a b-grade forward and would get a gig in any premiership side as the role-playing type.

I personally see Freddy as quite important tbh. Clubs seem to really value guys that can cover the Kms - certainly more than us that support the club.

The combination of his the kms he covers, speed and over a goal a game makes him quite valuable. Again like Schultz he’s never going to be an A Grader but he’s still a very very important part of what we need to be a successful football side.

We really need Switta to lift his output. Has great attributes and applies great pressure but not sure his impact is quite enough currently tbh.

Could Switta be better as a Half back flanker? In that Adam Saad style position?

How long is a piece of string?

It's difficult because we've been perpetually rebuilding but if the options were to a) Keep Darcy or b) Lose Darcy and get in an experienced forward, I'd take a. If only because I think there's actually a semblance of a good forward line there already and rucks are undervalued (imo). Adding to that, we could have Jeremy Cameron and Tom Hawkins playing FF and CHF for us atm and they'd probably still look average given our midfield gets beaten up most weeks.

I guess the one silver lining by the constant restumping is that we have an incredibly young core. If we can somehow keep them together - Darcy, Serong, Young, Jackson, Amiss etc are all going to peak at roughly the same time with Erasmus and Johnson not far behind.

It’s a tough one - certainly has AFL attributes.

Honestly if we didn’t have a reasonably short midfield as it is he’d be great in the midfield. Looks fantastic in there when needed but when your best two mids are 6-foot or less I’m not sure it’s as feasible as it probably should be.

Freddy does really well as a forward for a guy that isn’t a natural forward and has also played injured most of the season.

There’s nothing wrong with him and Schultz as forwards if the rest of our forward line is our talls except 3-4 years older and two small/medium forwards that have actual forward craft.

Does anyone actually think our midfield not being absolute dogsh** wouldn’t significantly improve our forward line without actually improving it on paper. Decent contribution would give us at least 2-3 more goals a game without even improving the forward line - that includes better entries and midfielders that actually kick goals. Outside of Brayshaw and occasionally JOM our midfielders have been pathetic at hitting the scoreboard - it should make up probably a quarter of our score even if we had a gun forward line and it isn’t even close.

I wonder how this list compares to other clubs. No one loses best 22 players like us.

Like a lot of others, I’m a little fed up with putting 4 to 6 years of development into players only to trade them when they get enough age and experience to become significant contributors.

We might rationalise it by saying that we are not trading superstars but every time you trade a 4 to 6 year player for a draft pick you are resetting the development clock to zero.

The way we are going we will be still losing in another 4 years and saying “but we fielded the youngest/least experienced team on the weekend”.

He could get better of course but I don’t think he’s going to be an AA player or anything like that. He’s likely to be a solid middle of the road role player at best. Just my opinion.
I don’t see any hardened, ruthless winners mindset in him, the kind you need to be in a flag winning side. If we could exchange him for a decent forward in the 15-20 range in the draft I would be quite happy to roll the dice on that.
Do you think he will ever be able to kick it more than 30 metres?

If he wants more money he won't be getting it at Geelong. its not their ethos to overpay for anyone and upset the rest of their team.

We started the rebuild in 2015/2016 and has taken us 7 years to be one of the youngest teams.

Very depressing
