I was a bit jilted when I first heard the news this morning.

However, I'm coming around on Markov as another VFL player but still believe he's had the same message drilled into him at two clubs now and remains happy to be that pacy back who runs himself into trouble as much as he helps his team and hasn't got clean enough disposal.

Some have suggested it's unwillingness to take on the message. Perhaps the skill level just isn't there which means no matter how many times he takes on the message it won't work.

Still, if he's a stop gap 5-10 gamer and he's not expected to take Zac's spot in the 22 we could do worse.

Heaven knows Saad cops enough hits through the year that inevitably be may miss a game or two and while he's several classes above Markov we don't have another player we can really slot into that spot as a backup. We've constantly said that the strength of teams like Sydney is that they have someone who can fill in for an injury. On that basis Markov makes sense.

I'm a bit the same. Wasn't keen when I first heard, but makes sense with more thought. The list of potential options would not be long, given we are only 5 weeks out from the season. How many players who are not already listed, would be doing an AFL level pre-season - and have the attributes we are looking for? I know he hasn't been doing it with us, but the Pies system shouldn't be that different.

It's really not just Williams whose speed we have lost. Boyd and Philp are both quick, as is Cunners, and we can never be sure what's going on with him. Cottrell is also not slow, so we have been hard hit in an area that we were already not strong in. If Markov has to fill some holes until we get some others back, then so be it. Then he can **** off.

The news from LGP via the player is more positive. Most of us would take losing one genuine first 22 player (in a theoretically easier role to replace), if it meant that the majority of the list had improved their fitness and running to the level required. All the noise coming out of the club suggests we can be very optimistic, despite the ZW setback.

A few years ago, Markov recorded the highest top speed in the AFL for the year. 37.6km an hour or something. Hopefully some mentoring from Saad could help him better understand when to go, when to keep going and when to stop or take the more conservative option. This is something Saad has improved at immeasurably over the years.

So what you're basically saying is that Markov is Louis Mendoza, and we need Saad to play the part of Jan to teach him to harness his speed, Mighty Ducks 2 style

A week ago, I wasn’t even sure who Markov is!

Now, I’m sure that he is the best player that hasn’t signed up as yet :D

Actually, just get him in as insurance, but give the existing kids a chance first: Kemp, Carroll or even Cowan when he’s ready

Markov delisted from Suns after being there for 5 minutes, so why? Suns have too many hb’s? Injuries? Attitude? Underwhelming form?

Curious.

Actually, thought he looked ok at Tigs, but his quick exit from Suns has me perplexed

Rate Markov, running HBF...not a lot unlike Saad.....loves to run the ball and have a bounce, good runner
was surprised Suns moved him on..had injuries hammy/knee much of 2022...
This could end up being a great move for Carlton !! if he can get some games with no injuries !!!
Injuries? Hammy/knee hey? Sounds like every other recruit we have.

Markov is a “list worthy” player. Fringe type with some specific unique traits and shortcomings in others.
While we have a need for speed, I can’t see him playing in front of the players many here see outside the ‘22. Newman, Marchbank, Kemp, developing Cowan as defenders or Carroll, Hollands, a fit Cuningham, etc playing higher with Doc reverting back to his All-Australian spot.

My preference is to use the vacancy on a youngster who missed the draft or is developing in a lesser league, but I can see the logic of a Markov type. I will continue to disregard the posters who suggest if we pick him up, he moves straight to best 22.

😁

Not sure about others, but I suggested he plays early, then up to him to keep his spot

Injuries or still underdone: Williams, Boyd, Marchbank, Cuners (not sure he would make it as a defender)

Ahead on maturity and development: Hollands, Cowan

And not the same type as: Kemp

With Doc rumoured to remain as a midfielder early (could change)

GOV Weitering Newman
Up for grabs Young Saad

So we are looking for 2 spots, 6th & 7th defender from a list of known options

Durdin, Kemp, Plow and possible addition of Markov

I'd say with a lack of run and carry out of the back half, Markov is a strong chance for 1 of those 2 spots. The next option would be a debate on whether the last spot goes to Plow or Kemp

I agree - definitely a chance as Docherty definitely going to be playing midfield minutes for the first 4-8 weeks and others not suited/ready as suggested.
There's plenty of talent in our VFL ranks that, in my view, would be a better investment in the long term - but given it looks like finals or bust this year, I can see Markov playing plenty.

Also the fact that Vossy has been screaming to get more run and carry into our squad. Williams would have been one of the last he wanted to lose.

Interesting take though on Markov in the innersanctum after his delisting.

"A key piece in Gold Coast’s ball movement when playing in recent seasons, he averaged 15.3 disposals and 5.5 marks per game during his time in Queensland.

Only managing 11 games this season, Markov fell victim to Gold Coast’s list concessions ending and the need to cut back list spots.

He brings speed and line-breaking ability to whatever club chooses to take him in. His ability to change the angles in defence to open up lines of attack would help stagnant sides or further improve teams with good movement out of defence
."

If Markov has to fill some holes until we get some others back, then so be it. Then he can Farkov.
Wholly unnecessary yet moderately hilarious......

I rate Plowman more than most here but Kemp is the way forward.

We need to back our youth & I believe they are already the equal of Markov. I am ok with Markov but he is the VFL player
Kemp and Cowans need to be first option - if that means Newman plays on the HBF and one of Kemp/Cowans is the 7th defender that is fine.
I just think their form and games into these guys will pay dividends compared to other options.
Leaving them to languish in the reserves while Markov plays 15 games is not the way forward.
Given Kemp and Cowans the first shot and play Markov in emergency situations

Backing our youth does not mean looking to them exclusively.

We are beyond playing certain footballers based on their age.

Best man for the job. If that’s Cowan or Kemp, great. If it’s someone like Markov or Plowman or Newman, so be it.

Would have thought Jack Carroll would have first dibs cermentating a role in the position you mention and spruiking about Markov.

A lot of these positions are interchangeable these days, wingers/mids/flankers, haven't had the opportunity to watching the VFL side as much I wished the past couple of years, really bullish on Carroll and his upside and potential and hope Voss unleashes him more next season (given body strength and injury issues
