VFL 2023 - Reserves Game Day discussion Rnds 1 - 22 (Merged threads)

So in summary, it’s something but not a thing, it’s a standard but it’s not measurable, it’s been implied but never clearly stated.
Yep, that now makes sense, funny how questions are answered when simple specific details are asked for.

As long as the club/coaches and Dow are reviewing his game, he would know what he needs to work on, to improve

Reinvent himself? As what exactly when he’s played in the middle each week? He has transformed his game but u would never know when he has been given 2 games (& player out of position) in the last 2 seasons.
No one including Dow knows what he needs to do to get a game, Voss is sticking to his system that doesn’t include utilizing his attributes
.
There's a gaping hole in the current best 22 for a midfielder who demonstrates polished forward craft and has some of the skills that Dow already has. It's probably the one thing above all else that our best 22 is screaming for. To the point where posters like myself are salivating over the thought of moving our AA caliber half back there in Saad. Others want us to move Kennedy into that slot given his ability to play taller due to his marking and kicking ability but he has weaknesses that make him less than ideal for the role.

There's a role there if Dow wants to take the initiative Shore up some of his pre-existing skills and build the others.

People questioned why he was learning some forward craft in the VFL. That's where the transformation is. That's his calling if he wants to salvage his AFL career and make it his He can do that in his current role in the VFL side. Many of the best in the AFL who do this are mids who rotate forward.

I like Paddy and believe he's capable of this. It's clear that's where the coaches see him getting an opportunity if he wants it.

let's not get carried away.

Paddy's kicked 3 goals in 7 games at VFL level.

He was doing better last year. Didn't he kick multiple goals a few times?

If you want to break into the 22 you need to look at where you can fit in and where there is need for your skills even if you need to reinvent yourself somewhat.

His preferred role is absolutely stacked and he won't (and shouldn't) get a go ahead of those who have cemented their place. Hence why I made the comparison to Liam Jones. Many thought it was a laugh until he did everything in his power to do it

There's the hole. The coaches have tried adding forward craft into his game

Kicked 16.10 last season to finish 3rd in club goal kicking.
Also kicked 4 in prac match, missed his last couple set shots in the last few games. Dude can kick a goal, he’s not a forward but knows where the big sticks are

It worked, he did & was very handy last yr, missed a few so far this yr

If he improves there that's his slot with some midfield rotation thrown in. It really is our greatest need. I'd love to see him make it his. Otherwise we'll be going shopping for it.

As much as I would like to see him get a shot with what I believe is a point of difference around stoppages, his coach is Luke Power who is also head of development so surely Dow would have to be as clear as crystal on why he isn't getting a game you would have thought.

I would love to be a fly on the wall because "doesn't/can't chase" surely can't be the only reason, we have a few of those in our seniors already and it's not like Voss is using any of the mids as goal scoring options so the "Dow gets lost playing forward" angle doesn't apply either.

Im sure Dow is crystal clear - the likely message at the end of the year 'try and get to another club otherwise we pay you $400-500k to play reserves as we wont play you' and then when he walks out and sees the Dow magnet in the bin confirmed it again

He wont play one game this year - he would have been played by now if he was to get a game (it would take 6 injuries in the middle for him to get a game)

Yeah tend to agree, think his time is done at Carlton, he's out of contract this year yes?

Yep, only reason he is on the list is becasue someone extended him for an extra year a few years back (apparently on decent coin - which explains why hestill turns up each day 🤣)

Extended last year for 1yr

Carlton midfielder Paddy Dow is yet to break into the senior side this year despite strong VFL form, but an un-reported contract extension ties him to the club for another 12 months.

Dow signed a three-year extension with the Blues in 2018, but added another year to the deal at some point, according to AFL Media’s Callum Twomey.

Not directed towards you Aph but connecting your link to our contract size discussion...

He may have been one of those kids on an inflated contracts (rumored previously) but there's no way he re-signed for similar coin given where his standing was last year.

Agree & doubt he would have Wickz.

Nah, he’ll get a few games later in the season, new/interim coach will give him a run 😂

Prob 2 of Ed, Fog, Boyd, Kemp to come out - one for sub, the other as backup.

Others not named this week:
Rested (assumedly): Fisher, Dow, Plowman, Binns, Akuei, Lemmey, Mirkov
Injured: Cuningham, TDK, Big Durds, Marchbank (+ Williams, Philp)
Wouldn't mind seeing Fogarty as sub and giving Ed a rest unless we need him to step in at senior level.

Leaves an opening for Kemp to have a dip in the middle...
